Cingular Treo 650 Email...Media Net vs. PDA Connect

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I've read that most of you say to go with Media Net since its 19.99 for unlimited use and it works off the same server as the PDA connect unlimited for $44.99. Is this true? Cingular store told me I would need to get the PDA connect.

If i got the media net unlimited and chatteremail for the push email, would i be able to receive emails as they arrive on a cingular treo 650?

thanks for all the help,

brian

Have you looked at using Express Mail from Cingular? It works great, but I didn't really look into any other options. Maybe I went the wrong direction, I'll watch this post as well.

your phone will work the same whether you're on PDA connect or medianet unlimited. Trust me. Just make sure that your IMEI in the system is something other than your treo. If you have another phone that would be great.

I just looked at my bill, now I know why you don't want to use Express Mail, I was charged about $21 for 10 days worth of email. So basically, if I understand correctly, you use a different program and Cingular doesn't recognize the data as email,so they don't charge extra, is that correct? Sorry, I'm new to this as well.

I had xpress mail, and the media net service for a while. Xpress mail works through gprs/edge so there shouldn't be any extra charges. If you buy from Cingular, you are told that you could only use their PDA service otherwise you have to pay full price for the device. I purchased my Treo 650 without service, so they don't know that I'm using a PDA device. I've had traffic hitting over 60mb each month and they're none the wiser on the Media Net and Xpress Mail that I have.

What do you mean by IMIE being different?

I have an MPX220 and a Treo 650, I got the MPX from AT&T with my voice and data plans. Got the Treo and never told ATT/Cingular, just bounce the sim back and forth.

Will ATT bag me for using the Mmode plan with a different phone than they sold me?

the only reason u tell att is if u have ur device insured. but since cingular's insurance doesn't cover pda devices it doesn't matter

But you cant do that if you are signing up as a new customer, unless, of course, you get one of the free phones and buy the treo on side. Right?

I just got off the phone with Cingular. I was charged for usage with express mail, but it was a mistake on their end and they took it off. Also I added insurance for my treo about 3 weeks ago. Everyone I talked to said that you have to add the insurance through the 800 number not the stores, I'm not sure why. So basically I pay $39.99 for the unlimited data package and $3.99 for insurance. Since you don't get charged for the Express Mail service, I have to say that's the way to go.

that's what I did. I didn't like the way the carriers push their expensive plans just because I have a pda device.

Interesting. When I talked to Cingular, they told me that the insurance was specificaly for phones. Even the razr wasn't covered until recently..

Could it be that its available in certain areas only? I tried getting insurance thru AT&T and that didn't work either.

(Swank911) What do you mean by IMIE being different?

By different IMEI I mean the system shows you as having let's say a Mot V551 but you're using your Treo. I say this because I had a customer come in who bought a Treo (he didn't buy from me so I didn't help much after he got screwed) and the rep who helped them gave them MediaNet unlimited. Customer care called them and they had to change their feature since it was provisioned wrong. There goes his $20 a month and he still had to pay the huge bill.

Exactly. But use a phone that you might actually use a lot of data on. Like an Ericsson S710a or a Mot Vxxx. Or if you know someone, they will change the IMEI's for you.

For the last time, Cingular's insurance DOES NOT and WILL NOT cover the treo 650. If you have it on your account you are waisting $4 a month. If in fact you try to make a claim and try to replace the treo they will politely tell you you're crap outta luck and hopefully refund your insurance for the months you paid it. They will not have pity on you and no you can't argue your way into a treo. I don't mean to sound harsh and if anyone takes it harshly I apologize. But, it just seems to me that there are 2 people in this argument about insurance: Those who heard someone got it covered and are misinformed and those who know it's wrong but try anyway.

I am still confused with the IMEI issue. Does Cingular/ATT care what phone I am using the Mmode or Medianet plan on?

Posted by: xynos

No they don't care.

First of all, I was not aware I was argueing with anyone. I was simply stating that I have insurance on my Treo through Cingular. I just talked to them for the second time today and the assured me, I have insurance and it will cover my Treo.

I also explained this to an attorney (friend) and he said they would most likely have to cover the phone should something happen to it. So I guess I will waste $4 a month on the outside chance something happens and they take care of it.

Again, sorry if I sounded like I was arguing I didn't mean to come across that way. But I see no reason why I shouldn't carry the insurance, just because they won't let you (most) carry it for whatever reason.

Cingular only cares if they are losing money. I doubt cingular is going through every high usage account and making sure they are on the right internet feature. But just in case, I'm playing it safe. This is what I mean by different IMEI. In cingular's system I have a motorola v600. I use 75-200Mb of internet on my phone. If they look into my account and see a phone other than a treo no one is the wiser; I would hope. The big question is, does cingular indeed look through high usage accounts? Like I said, I doubt it. But ever since that customer came in I wouldn't put it past them. Cingular is out to get money. As a business they have to be. Is there a difference between the 2 features. No. But hey if you could make people think they needed to pay $20 more per month to get internet on their phone would you do it?

Posted by: sakic_lanche19

I should have re-phrased what I said. I wasn't saying you were arguing. It's just that I get atleast 2 customers a week saying they need to replace a phone that cingular doesn't insure. It always ends up with them arguing that "The rep told me it was covered." I'm sure the rep told them but the rep was wrong. More times than not I call the rep and they agree that the phone was never supposed to be covered. Of course I'm there with a t'd off customer when the problem could have been averted. If you were told that it is covered then I would see about getting it in writing or at least see if they noted the account. Trust me get it in writing. I would hate for you to be told one thing and then get screwed. Unfortunately this is Cingular's M.O. Tell 'em one thing and do another.

I think in general, phone support personnels tend to be badly trained. I've had tmo, sprint, verizon and cingular, and once in a while you get the person who knows what they're doing. But most of the time, they're just the pits.

The Treo can NOT be insured!!! Trust me! What they do is they insure it... But if you call and try to file a claim theyll say its not covered and then refund what youve payed in. This happened to someone i know who had a razr.

But since you HAVE the insurance... If something does happen.. If i were you id raise H*ll!!! Threaten legality and stuff and make them replace it.

My 2 cents

This whole IMEI thing has got me wondering. How do i know what phone is in the system for me?

When i first signed up for service i used an unlocked SE p910a. Signed my service through a re-seller since it didnt matter where i got my service.

Do you think it shows that phone in the system?

I use my Treo now.. .and on occasion switch to a SE t616 for throw around use.

Suggestions?

If you did not inform Cingular, then yes you're still showing the P910A on their system. There's no way for them to know what phone you're currently using.

Hi guy. I think I am going to open a new account w Cingular with my K700i and then switch the sim to the Treo 650.

My question is, do I have to call Cingular to turn on the mediaNet unlimited service or I can turn it on and off from the website. With T-Mobile, I can turn on the T-internet from the website and it's very easy.

I am using the Treo with TMobile's $4 T-Zone, it's a far cry from the MediaNet Unlimited 20 price. I think I will only use it when I am on a trip. Trying to lay low until then next perfect PDA phone come out.
