I started this hunt looking for an easy way to increase the volume on some 3gp files I downloaded. Although I did not find a 3gp editor I did manage to get the job done using the first two programs super and virtualdub. I’ll give a quick walkthrough of how I increased the volume on my 3gps but do check out the other features in these programs. Virtualdub lets you do things like extract clips, copy frames and adjust both audio and video settings. Super handles a variety of formats, seems to process fairly quickly and is very easy to use. The MP3gain lets you adjust the volumes of your mps files. Best of all they are all free.

To increase the volume on 3gps you basically got to convert them to something else, edit them and then covert them back to 3pg. That is until someone steps up with a 3pg editor that will do this.

Start SUPER.
Just drag your source 3gp file into the empty box an the bottom of the screen
On the top left box 1, choose your output file format. I used mpg (Mpeg1)
Choose the Encode now button. That's it. Super will create a file with the same name.mpg in the same directory as the source file.

Start VIRTUALDUB
Open you source mpg file
Choose Audio,> Full Processing Mode
Choose Audio > Volume
Click the box “Adjust volume of audio channels”
Now use the slider to adjust the volume
You can preview your changes by choosing the play button with the 0 notation on it.
Choose save as avi

Now we will convert the AVI back to 3gp

Open Super.
Drag in your source avi file.
In box 1, choose 3gp (Sony Ericsson)
You can now make any other changes to your video/audio/bitrate for your final cut.
Choose encode now
You file will be saves as 3gp to the same directory as your source avi file.
