8900 Screen Problem

Recently the light on my screen stopped working, making it 99% impossible to read anything. After taking it in to my service provider (Cricket) and asking if I could have a new one (it has a year warentee), they said no, because the phone looks like it's been used alot (i.e., a couple scratches here and there).
So now they want $85 to replace the phone, it use to be $50, but they raised there insurance rates. Does anyone know if this is a common problem that can be easily fixed?

You may be able to replace the screen by finding an otherwise damaged model on eBay, but it means some DIY work.
