P800 questions

Which GSM service provider is the best value for the money and
has decent coverage in the DC area ? My only two choices
are ATT & T-Mobile... Are the P800 pre-commercial versions unlocked ?

My P800 is stuck in some Fedex truck (and hopefully still
in one piece) in this snow storm in the DC area...

I'm pretty sure that they are unlocked, as no providers in the US are carrying them yet.

Not sure about DC though, went there a few years ago with a cingular phone and was roaming on omnipoint and it was ok not great..........

Where did you get the P800?? I'd be interested in getting one myself.

Thanks.

The P800 is fully unlocked. Unfortunately, you are in an extremely bad area for GSM coverage. The big stone buildings and conditions make GSM very spotty in Washington DC. I went with T-mobile while I was there and was able to get reception in major parts of the city. From time to time, certain buildings would block the signal.

I'm in D.C. every day and have no problems with coverage. Inside buildings it is often problematic (pretty much regardless of the provider - I use T-Mobile, Verizon and Nextel) but I have no major problems with my T-mobile GSM phone. AT&T has a network here, too, but it's new and the coverage is pretty spotty. Cingular is (was?) testing it's GSM network here as well.
T-Mobile covers the entire urban and suburban D.C. area (Maryland + No. VA suburbs) and even some boonies - I live in southern Maryland and have great coverage in my house in the middle of nowhere...

The DC area is still best for Verizon. I remember people who were using their Verizon phone in the subway/metro. That pissed me off. I had used GSM all around the world and I go to our nations capital and it craps out underground. I was in the Hong Kong MTR and I had full signal there. It was beautiful. I remember that when I was in DC, whenever I went inside a building, I would have no signal. I also remember being outside behind certain areas or in a courtyard and getting no signal.

Verizon used to have a contract with the D.C. metro (exclusive...) and only Verizon could put it's BTSs underground. They would allow the AT&T and Cingular subscribers roam (on analog) but that's all. I believe that the contract is over and that soon there will be GSM coverage in the tunnels. BTW - T-mobile works in the Boston's T.
