Email woes on the GD87

Can any of the other GD87's out there help me out with sending email on my GD87??

For some reason, I can receive emails just fine [so I assume the pop server settings must be ok], but anytime I try to email a photo taken from the phone, it won't work! The smtp servers are indeed correct, as I use them on my home pc without any problems... so I'm stuck. I have no idea what the problem could be.

Weird thing is, when I first got my phone, I was actually ABLE to email photos without and problems, but now all of a sudden I can't [and unfortunately, I can't remember if I changed any minor settings in the phone, so I can't back-track!].

I use the Telus.net dialup internet servers to send/receive emails to avoid the high GPRS costs, but I've also tried using GPRS to send emails [just to make sure it wasn't a problem on the Telus server end] and it doesn't work either, even though I can use WAP with GPRS just fine. The same thing happens all the time... I click to send the mail, it connects to the server successfully then it starts to send the message, but then stops shortly after and says "Disconnected from Server" and the same error message as always appears... "Failed Please Retry".

So how should I go about setting up my email settings on the phone properly so that I can actually send photos/messages again?? If anyone has any outgoing email experiences they wish to share, please do so!
Any assistance would be MUCH appreciated

but could it be Telus was down?

rip

Im on Fido but do not use GPRS features

Posted by: urban4u

I don't think it could be that Telus was/is down, because I've been experiencing this problem for about a week now... lol

Perhaps I just need to try a different mail server or something...? I have no idea what to do I was thinking that I would bring my phone into a Telus store and ask the tech guys about dialing into the Telus internet servers from a mobile phone... but I'm not sure if they would have any clue what I was talking about...

Posted by: rip

i definately agreed with you there...also they may never have seen your phone too

i'm sorry i couldn't help you...i don't use email on my phones...waiting for a good smartphone to come to market *sigh*

good luck,

rip

Well, thanks for trying anyways rip

I'll try taking it to a Telus store tonight, and perhaps I'll phone Telus customer service later. If that doesn't work, hopefully someone on HoFo will have some insight into this issue

hmmm, interesting. My realbox was that way for a while but now it requires SMTP authentication which is not supported in the firmware that I have but is expected in the next couple of months as a running change. When I want to send mail, I use the mobile to dial into my ISP (earthlink) as if it were a computer and send...No problem.
I would check to see if your provider has changed their rules concerning send mail.

same prob here

Posted by: urban4u

You're experiencing the same problems with the Telus.net dialup servers, or just dialup internet in general??

I'd love to figure out how to get this feature working again, but I don't know if anyone has a solution

problem, though gprs on my gd87 works fine

don't understand why cuz i use the exact same settings with my t68i and can send and receive no probs

I am using T-mobile GPRS and I can not send mail on either earthlink or myrealbox but using a Circuit switched connection to Earthlink I can send mail on the earthlink SMTP server! I can not wait for GD87 to support SMTP authentication!

Glad to try and help

The thing that I don't understand, is that I can send regular email just fine by dialing into the Telus.net internet servers, but whenever I try to attach a photo with the email it doesn't go through. Very strange

Posted by: lost_rebel

What about attaching a midi or amr file?

Posted by: urban4u

Attaching midi's brings about the same problem as the photos, it doesn't want to send properly. But when I attach an mfm file, it works just fine!! That's really weird...
By the way, what's an amr file??

AMR, I am not sure what the acronym is but it is the voice files created by the voicerecorder in the mobile.
Have you tried to email yourself (and let the mobile download the mail) and see if the mobile gets the files correctly? It could be the mime or Unicode encoding format that has made something upset!

Posted by: urban4u

Yes, I've tried emailing myself things and I can receive everything perfectly on the mobile. I've sent photos, midis and text files, and they can always be received without problems.

But now I really don't understand what's going on...
I tried sending out another email with a photo attachment from my GD87 last night before I went to bed, and to my surprise it worked flawlessly!

Perhaps it has something to do with the dialup servers... Maybe they're over-capacity and that's why I was having problems sending. I really can't think of a reasonable answer to this

I am sorry, I meant email from the mobile to the mobile and see if it works. Also try emailing to people with different service providers/email tools (netscape, outlook express, outlook, AOL etc) and see if it is related to your service or email tool.

Posted by: urban4u

I tried what you suggested lost_rebel... and here's what I discovered:

1) Emailing from the mobile to the mobile [same address], works perfectly. It will send and receive the photos [and all files] ok.
2) Emailing from the mobile to any other service provider [hotmail, or someone's ISP account] seems to not function.... It just gives me the error "Failed. Please Retry"

So does this mean that the problem is related to my email service, or the email tool in the phone??

Thanks again for your help! You seem to know everything about everything!!

I am not ignoring you, but I am going to ponder this one for the night.

Posted by: urban4u

Thanks lost_rebel
Hopefully something will come to you tonight, and you'll suddenly understand what the problem may be. I'll check back tomorrow Thanks again

Any new insights into this situation today lost_rebel?

Posted by: lost_rebel

how are you emailing from the mobile to the mobile? How does this differ from sending email to your regular email address? For Instance, I use earthlink as my private ISP. My GD87 is setup to send and receive mail on this account. If I send an email to myself, I can check it on either the mobile or my computer. As I understand your problem, you can successfully email your mobile but when you email to your email address, the message is rejected by the server or in other words you can never successfully send mail with attachments. If you are using two different email servers/address between your mobile and your personal email, can you send a message to both at the same time and if so, what happens.

Posted by: urban4u

I tried what you suggested lost_rebel, and here are my findings:

LIST OF THINGS THAT WON'T WORK:
- If I try to send an email with an attachment to any other email address than my own email address on the mobile, it won't work.
- If I create an email and send it to my email address on the mobile, AND I type another address either in the Cc or Bcc lines, it still won't work.

LIST OF THINGS THAT WILL WORK:
- If I send an email to my own email address on the mobile, it can send fine with any attachment!
- If I send an email to my own email address on the mobile, AND THEN add a different persons email address in the same line [the "To:" line], it can send fine with any attachment!
- If I send an email that is simply text ONLY with no attachments, I can send it to any email address perfectly [it doesn't have to be sent to my email address on the mobile].

So basically [thanks to you, lost_rebel ], I have found a strange work-around method to send emails to other email addresses, just by adding the other persons address after the my own email address on the mobile in the "To:" line.
I can't imagine why this is the only way it will work for sending attachments to other people, but I'm happy that I can at least accomplish this task now
Also lost_rebel [if this helps at all], I am using Telus.net as my private ISP, and the email address I'm using on my mobile comes from my ISP's POP mail service.

Can you think of any logical reason why I can only send attachments if I send the email to my own address as well as someone elses address???
That just doesn't seem to make much sense to me... :

Posted by: lost_rebel

It sounds like the email formating is screwed up. Basically by adding your email address, it is making something happy on the server. I do not pretend to understand it.
I can say that I do not have this problem on my mobile.
I am glad you found a workaround though
