Hey all,

I have this friend who claims that changing the EPROM on his civic with vtec gave him 280 HP.

This out of a 4banger with a simple ECU mod.

He says all this is because of 'VTEC Powah, yo!'

Is he full of it.

AFAIK, vtec only changes the timing on the fly.... that's about it.

Wtf, is it some kind of miracle tech?

AFAIK, ivtec isn't all that.... but is my friend right, does it make that much of a difference?

interesting, maybe if I installed that on my car and constantly pushed the override button, people will think my civic isn't really turboed when it really is haha. That'll make my car less attractive to thieves if they think my car just has that fake turbo crap.

v-tec is a JOKE

correct me if im wrong, but...

its an on-off switch.

ie: up near 6k RPM vtec turns on and either advances or redards the timmings to give more horse power.

however it only does it for a small rmp range, and only knows one timming change.

so yes its nice, it DOES make a difference, but is WAYY more of a marketing gimik now then anything else.

BMW on the other hand, has VANNOS wich has INFINITE timings from BOTH in and exhaust, at every RPM range.

all vtech does is switch the cams over to haul in more air, its very effective

well, i personally drive a 94 accord with a T3/T4 custom turbo setup... i know a few things about vtech.. its not ment to be used thru out the whole rpm band, its a boost like feature that your able to use at will...same thing with a turbo, i can shift at low rpm and barely use it..you can also get vtech controllers to set at which rpm it should come on..as long as you have that, i overall think vtech is the best n/a technology

anyway, Vtec does make a difference, but not THAT MUCH OF a diff.

But no matter what, if u have or own a HONDA, you car gotz NO torque either. . its always gonna be slow.

for instance, Type-R's are fast cars stock. But no torque to begin with. Only good for highend

My car is a slow piece of crap. But i love it

oh, people dont get me wrong, i do believe it makes a difference, and i do think thats is IS usefull

its just that it could AND should be soooo much more.

it like saying that i can change the software so that i get vtech @ and rmp, well then why dosen't vtec do that automatically on its own??

thats what gets me. it can is is technically a GREAT thing, but its soo very crippled in its current form, that it provides very little real world use.

My car? I'v had it for about almost 2 years now . . its a 2000 but on the site i think it said my car was a 98 or something. Anyway, i haven't really added up or estimated how much i'v spent on my car. . but thats a good question!

I'll get back to you on that later . . i myself am curious as to how much i spent already since u brought it up

yup! i go to york university (the only school i've ever seen with a mall

), not really sure which year I am in since I transferred from de la salle university in the philippines when i was 2nd yr into langara college in BC (studied 1.5years there), then finally (i hope!) transferred here... soooo maybe i'm hovering around 3rd yr (yipee 2more years hehe)... taking BA computer science... bout u?

i miss that car! i miss the turbo *sniff*... i guess i'm going to sell it before my uncle wrecks it... he's like a mad scientist experimenting on the turbo setup... so far my only mod in my 2002 LXG are the snowtires and no-name SRI (which i recently took off)

It happened like this:

So we're driving around in his VW Golf '91...

Suddenly, at the stop light, a rice burner pulls up, it's an ugly-*** (even by CRX standards) silver CRX.

My friend starts to rev his 100hp, 216000km 4banger (manual 5spd), the RiceFag (auto, i could see in his car) does the same.

I ask if hes gonna race the crx.. he says "no."

"why?"

"Cuz it has vtec and the exhaust is high flow!!!"

"and? Vtec sucks ma bawls!! Ang high flow exhaust making a difference on a 4banger? Please!"

"Yo, you crazy? Haven't you EVER seen Fast and the furious.. All those cars were vtecs with like awesome exhausts! They were hella fast! They CRX'd kick the **** out of this car!"

"Listen I have a friend with a '96 Civic with VTEC, ok? And he has 280hp and gets 13.7 at the 1/4mile!!!"

That would be on-par with the LS1s....

Well, i'm studying BAS Honors at York University and its my 3rd year there. . so i'm hopeing to finish by my fourth year but i doubt it since i'm missing about 3 extra classes. I guess its off to summer school for me if i want to graduate a year from now. *Sigh* I just really wanna finish school.

As for my car, . . well to answer your qestion, I'v decided to finally calculate what i THINK i have already spent on exterior mods and so far i calculated up to $5000 which isn't that much compared to a lot of other people who go WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY out.

This year i can't really be bothered with my car. Too busy with school and work. And besides, its winter so my car isn't really being driven. At the same time, i get pulled over left-right-and-center for my car looking the way it does. Cops automatically think i'v got illegal crap in my car even though i dont. And i hate going through the hassel they put me in when u get pulled over. Its like a 20 minute process.

So this year i'm just not bothering anymore. i drive my mom's car around these days.

see how this helps when you're already 1hour late for your final exam? the car doesn't even have to go fast, but send the engine into vtec mode and whoosh, you arrive in the examination room just on time!
