You have the 8801 already??

hehe. thats a good idea. i actually saw a mini tripod for sale at a chinese night market in richmond this summer.

yah. our quality is so much better with the 903sh. i'm gonan compare the 903sh vs my xcute dv2 this wweek. 3.2 megapixel vs 6 megapixel camera phone.

but at night.. i find the 903sh doesn't take as good pics. i took a pic of a ferrari at 3 am-ish last weekend... it wasnt so clear. lots of noise.

Posted by: jtcb

A 6mp camera phone? It must be expensive. Where did you get yours?

Posted by: Timsta

i got mien direct from the company. its www.xcutemobile.com it wasn't too expensive. i got mine for a good price. it does decent for camera functionality and camcorder functionality.. can't say much about its ui.. cause its horrid. any company that spells october wrong in the calendar doesnt' really rank well with me.

Posted by: ironleung

Yis903imposubl you mentioned about adjusting the shutter speed to reduce the blur, cant seem to find it, i can adjust the exposure, zoom etc but not shutter speed....

Posted by: AL9999

Let's not forget that the DV2's 6 megapixels is interpolated from 3...

What does that means? Good or bad?

Posted by: Timsta

its good and bad. it means its not a true 6 megapixel camera. but uses digital technology to turn into 6 megapixels

Anyone knows where to buy accessories for cheap as seen on this page? Are the following three accessories be worth 220GBP? Someone in the UK quoted me the total price for all three accessories. BTW, is 230GBP + 30GBP Vodafone unlocking fee sound right? Is this the price in the UK now? Anyone from the UK here can confirm for me?

XN-1QC32 (AC Charger - Ocean plug)
XN-1DC30 (USB Data Cable)
XN-1AR90 (Audio Remote-Controller)

I am not sure of the above accessories but if you are getting the phone for 230 GBP plus 30 GBP unlocking fee from Vodafone, it will be worth it anyway.I got my phone unlocked by Vodafone for 25 GBP.It is the standard fee from Vodafone to unlock your phone.

Posted by: kms-lai

the accessories is not worth that much

Posted by: jtcb

So is it a rip off for the accessories? The phone alone is already 230GBP. I know the unlocking fee is standard. I just want to know if the price of the phone and unlocking fee this person quoted is the actual amount the store quoted.. I think you know what I mean..

Is there anywhere I can see a price list of all the accessoies available?

Posted by: kms-lai

this is the price for the accessories, in hk

cable and cd rom at hkd 48 sharp brand

remote at around hkd 450

charger adapter at around hkd 128 sharp brand

charger adapter and desktop stand hkd 150 brand goki

Posted by: jtcb

Are they HK$ ? How much difference are they compared to 220 FBP?

Do you think you can buy the above three items I mentioned and mail it to me? I'll paypal you..

Posted by: kms-lai

less than 50 GBP for the first three items

which phone do you have.

Posted by: kms-lai

i'm not sure if the items i mention, is the same model number, but they are for the 903/902 and 703 (sx833,sx813 and sx313), apart from the remote which is imported from japan, the other two are from smartone-vodafone hk.

Posted by: kms-lai

the cable and remote, should be the same, but the adapter, no, hk use the 3 pin, but a third party brand may be available.

Posted by: jtcb

I'll be getting the 903..

"less than 50 GBP for the first three items"

Do you mean the ones on my list or the list on that accessories page?

If you can get it for a lot cheaper than the guy quoted me for 220GBP for all three items, I'll get it from you. Are you in the UK or HK?

all three items from your list, but the ac adapter is a uk 3 pin plug, not the 2 pin.

if you are getting the 903 it should be supplied with the adapter.

Hi and if anyone can help me i'am for ever in your debt.I'am not being lazy in asking and this may sound simple to everyone who reads this post. But i can't for love nor money find the correct settings for vodafone live on my Hong Kong Sharp 903.I have been on the vodafone website and nothing comes through to my phone regarding live settings.I have even been e-mailing vodafone customer services and they say they can't help me.And would have to take it into one of there shops.Which i don't want to do because even if i tell them not to do a master reset they will and render the phone useless.Which then means shipping it back to Japan.I have even been on all different kind of websites even searching through google and other search engines.I have got settings for all other networks apart from the one that own the rights to the phone. Now how ironic is that so all i ask for is for somebody to come and save the day by letting me know the below settings and please remember it's pay as you go settings i need.

So do you think you can help me out here? You are in HK? I'll be getting one directly from the UK. I know there is a UK AC Charger comes with the phone. I just want to get a seperate one to be able to use in Canada (2 pin plug).

So how much is the total for the remote control, USB cable, and plug?

If you want, we can discuss this via pm. LMK.

The volume from the 903sh speakers are so low,, even when turning to level 5,, can't hardly heard anything when i put the phone in pocket... comparing to other phone they are very loud,,, anyone know how to fix this problem???

thanks!!

on99sir,

it's been covered...please read the thread or use the search feature (it seems no one does...). in any case, turning off the surround seems to help some.

Posted by: beyond

how about the question about the shutter speed?

oh yeah and does anyone have any tips or guides into how to take better pictures?!?

Posted by: mavericke

Shutter speed is pretty alright...It is quite fast as I have tested yesterday...

Posted by: beyond

i mean, can you adjust the shutter speed?
i think yis903imposubl mentioned something about being able to change it in an earlier post

Posted by: ironleung

Ive cked everywhere, cant adjust the shutter speed. I find the shutter speed on the sharps horrible, thats why all the pics taken are all blurry... I think setting it on sports might make it slightly better.

Posted by: mroach

Can the keypad backlight be turned on with the beta unlock?

Posted by: IANFX

The 903 SH cost $700 in canda (USD..i think, since I didn't buy it)

Posted by: yis903unposubl

I suppose phrasing as Shutter Speed was a mistake. However, there are various modes to use when taking your photos. If you're having a blurring problem, try Sports Mode. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Going with beyond's question about tips or guides about taking pictures, the owner's manual does say to not shake or move while taking a photo, as it may cause a bad image (or something along those lines; that wasn't a direct quote). IMO, the camera is good for what it is...a cameraPHONE (phone in caps, because that's it's first priority). If you bought the 903 to be a camera, you should've done some more research first. It's not a bad camera, but by far, it's not supposed to take the place of any digital camera you already have.

The "Can the keypad backlight be turned on with the beta unlock" was answered earlier in this thread. Can people please make use of the search feature? It's pretty useful, and makes it so people don't have to answer the same question 5 times.

Before I posted I searched for 'keypad' and got no results...

Posted by: yis903unposubl

FYI, it was covered in this thread...

however, if you go into your settings, and into your display settings, go to backlight, and select any setting. magically, your keypad lights up. You will have to do this everytime your phone is shut off and back on again.

P.S. I'm not trying to be a **** about it, it's just redundant to have threads no one reads, and asked the same question 5 or 6 times when I check my PM's.

Posted by: yis903unposubl

In response to the different themes that 903 has...

VODAFONE Theme

Theme 1

Theme 2

There aren't any more themes, not even for download. You can change your background with any image you desire (resize to 240x320 for best result). As an added note the UK and HK versions have a bar along the bottom of the idle screen. The JPN version does not. Here's a pic of the JPN version. The background I'm using is available for download as well...I'm working on a few others when the boss isn't looking...

Download some more here: (I'm still working; so only 3 as of now!).

Posted by: mroach

Here are some shots where you can make out the theme

Posted by: mavericke

Gosh! How I wish my Euro 903SH would have different themes...

Posted by: AL9999

They are already there in the EU firmware I suspect - Sharp has just removed access to them for whatever reasons they have...

The JP and EU firmware are built from the same source and just undergo slight modifications for their respective markets, but I can't understand why Sharp would block themes off. Does Vodafone Group want us to only experience their rubbish menu???

Posted by: mavericke

I really hope that in time to come all 903SH will be able to have more themes.Vodafone theme is just plain and simple. We need more mods!

Posted by: jtcb

Is it the pic with red the EU theme? I remember GX32 looks similiar to that too..

Posted by: mroach

Quote:

Actually, they have a thing about wanting all of their phones to have the same feel to the interface. From a dumpy little free colour screen phone, to BlackBerries and high end phones such as the 903SH, they want a common feeling and look. I can understand where they're coming from, but I think it's a bit over-done.

Edit: So where is that option to turn the backlight on? I searched for 'keypad' on every page of thread and turned up empty handed.

I think the last things bothering me about the phone are no T9, and contact sorting. I really hope these phones will be flashable.

Posted by: coolandmellow

Yes Shutter speed is a problem also when in Video mode, Mobile light is automatically blue for some reason.I mean the setting doesnt stay when you exit video and go back.I set it to white and auto, but after exiting and going back in to video mode and taking a film the mobile light is back to bloody blue again with setting back to off ,what do u say to that so basically when u leave it in auto and white light or low light next time you use it again the light setting says off but the film light comes on as blue. What the hell is that all about.Thats F...upped.

Ok, I ve been out for a couple of weeks but I am back to the forum. I read the posts and I m facing some problems here:

* Details: 903sh Jap version, beta unlock

1) Bluetooth File Transfer
It is weird cause with number 1 usb bluetooth dongle (Orange Micro Blue2) the file transfer function wasn t able. I could just find for my 903sh: Obex File Transfer (contacts and business cards); Voice gateway and Dial Up Networking.
But even this way I was able to send Videos and Photos to my computer easily.
So I tried Number 2 Bluetooth Dongle (a primitive D-Link DBT-120) and it was working fine for Pictures, but not for any other type of files (such as .JAR games, .HUF; ACC music or even 3GP videos).
Then I tried to install the 903Sh Handset Manager included in the box. But it does not find my device. I tried to change the ports but it was useful.
Anyone has a clue over this issue?

2) How to config email settings? I did not find any POP3 config in my device.

Thank you all for the help. Take Care and lets enjoy the best from the "beast" (for who is not used to ... this is my 903sh nickname)

Posted by: moonmojo

I have the same question in another post. Hopefully someone will answer this.

Posted by: moonmojo

Got an answer on the e-mail POP and SMTP settings. No can do on the Japanese version. Only SMS and MMS.

Posted by: moonmojo

OK I'm tired and I'm giving up. Would someone PLEASE just post the internet settings for Cingular as they pertain to the 903? And before someone swoops in and chastises me for not going ot the Cingular site, I have been there quite a while and came away with very little. I have searched these forums and I have seen this question asked several times and it never gets a reply other then "go to the Cingular site" Sorry, but it's hard to find and the nomenclature probably doesn't match up either.

So, seeing as this thread is an FAQ for the 903, would someone kindly post the internet settings from cingular and relate them to the menu items on the 903?????

Thanks in advance

Posted by: yis903unposubl

For the Bluetooth File Transfer, what are you trying to accomplish? It will NOT sync with Office/Outlook properly. You have to disable this in the Handset Manager on your PC. On another note, a faster file transfer method is the SD Card if you have the port for it. The slower would be the Infrared, but it is very reliable as long as you have the time and patience for it.

No POP3 as far as I know as well, I'll investigate this more thoroughly, but you shouldn't have any trouble using things like HOTMAIL or GMAIL (I use both and they both work fine).

As for Cingular user...someone sent me a PM a long while ago with their answers to this dilemma. Later, I will look through my PMs for this information and hope I still have it.

Posted by: mauvanilla

Ok, maybe I was not clear with my statement.

My blueooth does not work to transfer files (movies, .JAD, .JAR, .HUF) from computer to phone (except for pictures). But it works fine from phone to computer; I can easily send pictures and movies that I ve taken in the phone and send it faster to computer.

When I tried to use the Handset manager, it did not find my device, no matter the port I would choose it could not find my 903sh.

I ve tried 2 different USB dongles in my computer, and it was useless...

I am wondering if there is any config that might work in this case, cause I do not have a mini sd adapter in my comp.

any truth to rumours I've heard that beta unlocked Black 903SHs have more problems to them than the creme white and red ones?

Posted by: yis903unposubl

no...why would the color matter? it's what's inside that counts...

Posted by: BMWFilms

As I said it was rumours I heard and that's what I thought as well.

Great thread!

I read on this thread that mp3 or waves files need to be converted to ACC/M4a file. This can be done on iTune. Is iTune just the free software downloadable from apple? Is it complicated to convert files to ACC/M4a using iTune?

Posted by: j_rock

Hey everyone. First off, great site and thread here! I'm sorry...I thought I was a registered member here long ago, but it seems I either forgot my login/password, or it just shut me out after a while. For the past few months I've just been cruising along this site without ever loging in.

Anyway, I just though I'd mention that yes indeed they are still selling the V903SH here in Japan. In fact, my friend just bought one recently. According to the Vodafone shop here, they told me they were simply sold out, thus they just needed to order more phones. Is it true? I don't know, but I am from here, and people here don't seem to know much or care much about unlocking. So maybe Vodafone really did just run out of supplies.

If people have questions about the V903SH, I can try to help you as much as I can. Thanks!

Posted by: yis903unposubl

iTunes is free, go to iTunes.com for it. It will convert not only your Mp3's, but also any CD's you have to AAC.

Posted by: yis903unposubl

Q: Is there a leather case for my 903SH?
A: Yes! It's available at Hi-Mobile.net (I just ordered mine!).

Posted by: Blt4424

I'm considering a 903 and deciding which version I should get. If I choose one version over the other, I can't get screwed when the full unlocks come out, correct? It's just a matter of what is what right now...right? I mean if I go and buy the UK version and the full unlocks come out, I won't be missing out on anything or won't be able to have compared to the other phones. I'd like to order one this week as I'm in need of a phone as soon as possible. I realize at first like everyone not all the features can be used but once the unlocks are out, everyone will basically be on the same page with each version, right?

I believe from reading that the headphone set is locked to the ones made specifically for the 903. Must they be purchased seperate? Are they available at any place a 903 is sold?

Posted by: jtcb

Blt4424, which version are you planning to buy?

As for using your own earphone, you can purchase an adapter.

Posted by: Blt4424

Oh, thanks, didn't know an adapter was available. That aside, I'm trying to get my hands on a black 903 but I can only find black that are JP. The problem is the JP cannot play mp3s still and I want that capability. I'm still looking around but if anyone knows of somewhere to get a black 903 thats Euro or HK, if you could let me know that would be awesome.

Is there a chance that the JP will never support mp3 playback?

So once i use iTune to convert them to ACC, can i just send songs via bluetooth and handset manager to my external miniSD? (is this process difficult?)

Do i need to do much more to play them?

Posted by: yis903unposubl

There's nothing more you need to do. Just make sure if you're copying directly to your MiniSD that it's in the correct directory. If it's copying to your handset via bluetooth or infrared, remember your handset only has 8MB of memory. You can move it to the MiniSD through handset commands, but it becomes tedious. It's much easier if you copy to MiniSD directly (not to mention much faster!).

You cannot use them as ring tone!

any1 get how to do the photo call... I go to the contact and go to edit and go down to picture.. let's u go to the memory card or phone memory for the pix.. let's u see the pic, but it doesn't have a SELECT button to select that picture as that person's contact...

Posted by: yis903unposubl

you have to resize the photo for phone book. if you go to your data folder and then pictures you will find a list of your photos. press menu and it's under i believe resize. Then make it for incoming call. then you can set it to your respective name/number.

I have't used the answering machine much, but from when I was playing around with it, I found the only way is to go in and listen to it, and once you're done listening to it, it will then give you the option to delete it.

Posted by: yis903unposubl

just to clarify, while the message is playing, press menu. then the option for save/delete is there.

First, make sure you have your phone setting to GPRS and GSM.
Second, this is for Cingular USA. I didn't clarify all the titles to reflect what's on 903, but it shouldn't be hard to figure out.

Is $450 shipped for a black 903SH a good price?

Posted by: dragon208

Voicemail.. I subscribe to voicemail and suppose to get text message indicator with a voicemail indicator on my phone when i have voicemail.. however i notice i dun't get any of that on my sharp.. arg IS there a setting to turn it on or something?

Posted by: yis903unposubl

no option to turn it on/off. it should be on whenever you get a new voice/text message. it doesn't apply to answering machine. the answering machine icon will have a number next to it where the number is equal to the number of messages you have.

Posted by: totaltoanage

$450 shipped for a black 903sh with test mode unlock is a very good deal. Get it now cause its going to get harder and more $$ to get it later.

How do I insure the phone is set for GPRS? The settings I see in network are "auto" "3G" and "GSM"

Thanks for the vote of confidence in my ability to Google. I did Google and I did find settings similar to these. It seems I have applied all the permutations possible with not much luck. The phone has "Web Settings" Proxy Settings" and "APN Settings" and they are all interrelated. I'm to the point where the phone appears to be trying to access the net (globe icon pops up) but it always ends with "Error: Connection to server lost" Without the coorelation to the phone settings, I can't tell if I have the phone set up incorrectly or I have a service problem.

Posted by: yis903unposubl

make sure you have "activated/turned on" your new settings.

Posted by: Blt4424

How many highest quality 1024x768 pictures fit on the 64mb mini sd card?

Posted by: yis903unposubl

8 bits are equal to 1 byte.
1,024 bytes are equal to 1 kilobyte (KB).
1,024 kilobytes (KB) are equal to 1 megabyte (MB or Meg)

so, figure out the average of your photos in KB, and then divide it into 64 MB.

Posted by: acuraracer

Just recieved my 903SH in the mail today. I spent all morning reading through every page of this thread However I am still stuck on a couple things.

1. I have gone through the whole convert mp3s to aac process. I can send them to the phone fine but when I try to play them, both formats come up with "Cannot Open File" message. Am I doing something wrong? Also, did I read correctly that neither of these files are able to be used as ringtones? What formats can? And if none can, am I stuck with the stock ringers?

2. I have tried to resize my photos for a "Picture ID" for Incoming Call settings. I tried to re-edit some of my contacts and there is still no way for me to select the resized picture.

Text messaging seems to work fine for me and I have no other complaints with the phone. It is a little bigger than I expected and I would have liked to have the black version but Im pretty happy with it. My main concern right now is the ringers. Please Help!

Do not use phone bluetooth to send large files end of story get a memory card reader sd card reader dont waist time it takes 7-10 minutes for 5mb are you crazy.Ok my firend i may be able to help you ,only because i am a guru,a pc Dr and cell phone expert. No only kidding i came across the same problem as u did and by trial and error i discovered that on the 903 handset manager you have to try the different comm ports provided on the settings there should be around 3 and surely one of them will work but close and re open the handset manager everytime ok good luck and let me know if it works. If you want to send a file usinf windows xp bluetooth module then you must choose receive file if sending from phone to pc.

I just got mine today too! Black 903SH, and man it is sweet! Couple quick questions, can you hot-swap the memory cards (just pop them in and out without phone being off)?

Also, is the charger US-socket safe? I don't know if Japan is like Europe and appliances can't be used both places. Or something like that. ??

The Japanese charger works fine in U.S./Canada.

I swap cards often with the phone on, no problems.

450 is a good price considering price is going up now.

Yeah I got it just in time I think. It's black too .

I have another question but was too late to edit my previous post.

How do I transfer files to and from my sd card? Will a bluetooth usb dongle work? How about just a media card reader?

Posted by: jtcb

Is there any way to remove the Live icon? Is it on a particular version or all three versions? Does flashing fw remove it? If I buy a locked UK 903, does flashing fw unlocks it or are they two different things?

Bluetooth -> bluetooth USB dongle

SD card -> card reader

Isn't this an obvious pattern? I mean.. you answered your own question in your post.

Is it safe to use the phone in an airplane? I read something in the manual about not using it in an airplane. Has anyone done it?

Posted by: yis903unposubl

TURN OFF ALL PAGERS AND CELL PHONE IN AIRPLANE AS IT CAN CAUSE INTERFERENCE TO EQUIPMENT.

I thought this is common knowledge in today's world...

Posted by: Timsta

there is an airplane mode.... on the 903sh.. never used it. but apparently there is.

Posted by: yis903unposubl

yeah, but i don't want to be that one @$$hole who doesn't turn off his phone, and ends up arguing with the stewardess about it. furthermore, you think they'd flexibly agree to it?

Posted by: AL9999

Yes all Sharp 3G phones have airplane mode or offline mode or whatever you want to call it. It's in the Connectivity menu, you have to activate it before the plane takes off, and then when the plane is cruising (not climbing or landing) you can use the rest of the phone's non-network related features without causing interference to the plane's navigational equipment.

Posted by: AL9999

I know US airplane carriers still have a problem with allowing people to use flight mode on their phones... but that's the US isn't it?

haha. i could see it on the news now.. Hardcore phone user. refuses to shut off phone. stewardess throws passenger out of plane with no parachute.

well i think the airline industry is still pretty ignorant to up and coming technology. but then again. you can't train every flight attendent to recognize phones.. and not only that.. the old lady next to you might think its ok to use the phone seeing you playi with your offline phone.
next thing u know. plane is dropping 10000 feet ....

Just wondering if you guys can provide some advice. I currently hold a jap 903, still beta, was thinking whether to spend on getting the necessary stuff to flash my firmware. What I mean is that I will have all 3 firmwares, jp, euro and the chinese one, but the expensive part is buying all the necessary things and software needed to do the flashing. I wanted to experiment all 3 firmwares to see which is really the best. There is a comparison table on the firmwares on ebay au if you guys are interested in knowing.

Costs of the software and etc stuff should come up to 100-150 US dollars..expensive huh...

Posted by: Blt4424

I just wanted to use it to listen to music. And when it's closed, they'll have no idea it's a phone.

Posted by: Timsta

true. they wouldnt' know then. ha ha. but it would be kind of amusing to see a si-lai or old lady turn on her cellphone and start gabbering on it after seeing u play with yours. i wonder if a stewardess would yell at the old lady.

Posted by: BMWFilms

Depending how sleep deprived they are...they'd yell at anybody lol.

Posted by: Timsta

i just realized my old sharp usb cable that worked for the 902 sh. doesn't work for the 903sh due to the bottom of the 903sh has the two sides and my cable is too thick for it to slip all the way in. the adapter still fits th.. booo

i just flashed tw firmwre.. its a fake. bleh. not happy about that. beware of tw firmware flashes ppl. if u see a flower on your phone when you boot up. its not tw firmware.

Phone book question.........I've tried doing searches but no luck for this problem so here goes. I copied my phone book from my docomo phone to my 903sh on vodafone. although my numbers are in alphabetical order when I enter a letter example 'b' to find people starting with 'b' or 'c' to find those starting with 'c' itr automatically brings up the lsit starting with 'y' . Any solutions to this?

Posted by: M-THIS

Boggler, you will need to set up the "reading" fields. They way i did it was to manually entre the name again in the reading field. Pain? Yes. But you had to do it!

Others on this forum might have been suggestion though!

another question: how're supposed to transfer files from your computer to the phone? was a usb data cable supposed to come with the phone? or do I have to buy it separately?

Posted by: Timsta

u have to buy it seperately.

Posted by: khaltire

Doesn't the 903SH come with an MiniSD card reader or something?

Posted by: Timsta

it comes with an adapter. not the reader itself. tehy figure they need to make money somewhere.

Posted by: khaltire

well what does the adapter do then?

Posted by: BMWFilms

it lets you use the miniSD in a normal SD card reader

Posted by: khaltire

How does it work? I have a regular SD slot in my laptop.. does the adapter have a SD card that slides in and converts it to a Mini SD slot.. anyone have pics?

Yes. These are very common in Japan as many people have 5-in-1 memory card readers that won't read the Mini-SD cards without such an adapter.

put the mini sd into the mini sd adapter~ that'll turn the mini sd into a sd card ~ and put it into ur regular sd slot ~ i used to use a rsmmc put into the adapter and used it on my 902 ~ i hate how u can't do that on the 903 ~ 902 can take any card... 903 can't... jeez... they go backward in technology~
actually the card reader i have ~ i can just stick the mini sd in without the adapter ~ kind of hard to take out though lol

Posted by: S.L

this is the one I use, it has two slots for full size sd and mini sd, you just have to push the card in to insert or pust to eject.

is ur phone fully unlocked or beta unlock.. I got my settinmgs up on my beta unlock but doesn't work, so I'm wondering if ur's is fully unlocked?

Posted by: yis903unposubl

I'm not sure why everyone with beta unlock is having so much trouble getting the GRPS running. I have the beta unlock, and I'm using the GRPS settings that are posted in this thread, and I'm online with it perfectly (to the extent that 2.8 MB on my phone are to VAPURI).

Please check to make sure that you have the settings active, and sometimes it will not find your service provider's "Hot Zone," so try something universal, such as google.com.

I don't mind helping individual members troubleshoot, but to help me out, please read the thread and the forums for information before asking. It's redundant to answer the same question more than a few ten's of times in a forum.

Good Luck to everyone, and without 3G, the internet is dial-up slow.

My phone is fully unlocked by Voda England.
GPRS is perfect.
MMS sending working more or less well without delivery report.
MMS receiving doesnt working.
I dont have any idea what's the problem.
Any comments

I just have a quick question for people living in the Greater Vancouver Area and are using this phone on a Fido network. How is the reception with the 903SH with Fido?

Hey there folks. I'm picking one up from Japan in December as a birthday present from my fiance to me. Now, I read that POP3 email isn't available... well that's what I use to contact my friends and relatives in Japan by using my own domain (www.pozland.com) and using my domain's pop3 email on my Motorola V635.

Since the phone has been out for a while, and since this thread has also been going for a while, does anyone know if there's been any firmware upgrades that allow you to override the Vodafone SkyMail settings so I can just plug in my POP3 email information & away I go? Heck, even paying another few bucks when I get back for a full flash would be fine by me.

I will be using it with Rogers, if that helps & any suggestions or information will be greatly appreciated.

The only way to get POP3 that I am aware of is to get your phone flashed to the Euro version. Who knows what the future holds.....

You could use a free service such as classy.jp to pick up your POP3 email. Actually, they have free and pay versions, but free works for me.

so you are telling me that i can set up pop3? as mentioned, i have my email pop3 server on my Moto635 and simply want to do the same with the sharp. i will have the choice to pick up any of the 3G models from Vodafone.jp while on business in December in Yokohama.

Do any of you know if any of the other 3G models support pop3??

Posted by: yis903unposubl

i haven't tried with hotmail, but I have just typed in the URL, www.gmail.com using my phone and retreived my mail just fine (as long as there's not a super large attachment; I think it's a 300kb limit).

On another note, those of you who use MSN Messenger, and would like to use it on your mobile phone, but tired of the 902 versions that don't seem to work right with our 903's, you can always use a web based MSN. wap.e-messenger.net or mob.e-messenger.net. After logging in, you might have to reload once to see who's actually online. Happy messaging.

I use the beta unlock as well, and I've tried everything I could find, but I'm still unable to get the WAP working.

I don't think I've seen ONE person get WAP working on JPN firmware who has ROGERS service in Canada like I do. And I've only seen one person get it working on Fido.

When I read descriptions of the firmwares on Ebay auctions, it says WAP works 85% of the time, but depends on service provider. I'm starting to think - maybe Rogers is one of the 15% that doesn't work with JPN firmware?

Posted by: jack_d12

i'm trying to use my pop3 e-mail account too and i can recieve but i can't send e-mails!! i turned on the smtp authentication and it would say i can't send to the recipient !!! what's going on !

Posted by: yis903unposubl

sorry, but i can't really help u with rogers or fido...it's not something i'm hands on with. i didn't know about the 85% probability of it working with GRPS. To be honest, I didn't think I'd ever have it working. when i bought it, the seller told me that GRPS doesn't work. he also told me that it was 1 touch of the hang up button will turn off the phone, and it cannot be used as a back button. however, upon using the phone, I can use it as a back button with out it turning off, however, if I go to the idle screen with it, and then press the hang up button, then it will 1 touch turn off.

in any case, these differnet firmwares are a bit of a hassle, but we're all struggling through it, aren't we?

I thought the same thing! I thought I couldn't use the hangup as a back button, so for the first hour or so, I avoided it at all costs. Then when I accidentally hit it during a java game and it quit out.. I was happy to find that the one touch is only for the idle screen!

I'll give the network techs at Rogers a call to put our brains together and see if we can come up with a solution. Hopefully they will be cooperative.. I've heard some stories..

Posted by: bananas03

Hello everyone, I had the beta unlock 903SH and had Timsta flash it to his fully unlocked jap firmware with no reprovisioning! I'm on rogers as well and have the WAP working on the phone in both the Beta and fully unlocked versions. I'm not sure why everybody has problems with the set up but it does work, if you need a hand with setup let me know.

Posted by: yis903unposubl

if u get the network settings, u should be able to figure out where they go on ur own. it's not too hard...

Posted by: bananas03

Getting the network setting and putting them in to a new device your not familar with can be tricky. But your right, it's not too hard. But if someone needs help with Rogers setting for Wap let me know.

Posted by: Pozzy

Oh that's great! Now that I've heard some of you using your 903's with POP3 email, it sets my mind at ease. Even if there's a low percentage of you who got it working, that's still enough insentive for me to pick one up next month.

yis903unposubl, with your permission, I'd like to contact you on MSN/YAhoo/AIM/ICQ or one of those formats. I'd be interested in setting up a POP3 email account for you using my domain & checking to see if you can send/receive email.

Posted by: bananas03

The 903SH (Jap) does not have an email client on the phone. I believe it is through the sevice providers in Japan, the UK 903 does however have an email client on the phone for POP3 etc.

Posted by: Pozzy

So if I were to end up buying the 903 in Japan, could i have it flashed to UK specs?

Hey can you post your settings for WAP on Rogers? and MMS settings as well if you know thanks.

Also dose anyone know if POP3 email is avaliable in either one of the chinese versions?

Alright, here are the Rogers settings for the Sharp 903 that I used:
APN Settings Proxy Settings

APN: Rogers GPRS Name: Rogers
APN: internet.com Address: 208.200.67.150
Authenication: PAP Access Point: Rogers GPRS
Username: wapuser1 Home: mymobilehomepage.rogers.com
Password: wap Port: 8080
DNS: leave blank Username: wapuser1
Lingertime: 180 Password: wap

You must go to web settings in the internet settings on the phone, create a new profile.
Profile name: Rogers GPRS
Proxy: Rogers
Proxyn
Then you must activate the settings. Also don't forget to set the settings after inputting the APN and Proxy settings!
As for MMS settings I have them but I'm not sure they work because it says the MMS is sent with no error what so ever but nothing is received! Don't know why
Hope this finally helps you guys out

sorry guys I spaced the APN and proxy settings but when I posted it, it shoved them beside one another, sorry

Posted by: Pozzy

I'm sorry to keep this thread up for so long, but I do have another question for those of you with the UK flash.

As mentioned, I deftly want to use POP3 mail on it so I'm considering having it unlocked, then flashed into the UK software so I can do so. Now that being said, can any of you tell if if it comes with Japanese characters or Chinese characters? I'm primiarly interested in the hiragana, rather than the Kanji & Chinese characters.

After looking through the entire thread, I couldn't find a definitive answer.

-Pozzy

Well then I'm curious as to who can hack into the phone & allow the change of the Vodafone email settings. Good lord, I'd give a left nut for that.

Well I'll be damned!!! I've tried those same settings SO many different ways.. and I did again and got the "Error 502: Bad Gateway" and all I needed to do was change the homepage from rogers to google (or something else) and it works! I know I've changed the homepage before, but probably with some other settings that I messed around with.

bananas03, you are a life saver! Thank you SO much! This is also based on my own stupidity, and I feel ashamed for it, but THANK YOU!!!

I'm using Jap Beta FW and i tried your setting exactly many times but i still couldnt get it working. I'm using rogers in toronto btw. Can anyone in toronto get it working chime in?

Posted by: Tiwe

I got it HALF working guys......all i had to do was wait for the "HTTP ERROR: 520 Bad Gateway" message to come out then go to options and enter what ever URL i want. But is there a way to set it so that the home page will load (instad of getting error messae first then enter the URL for the home page in options) ? Also I've noticed when i enter the URL or Google.com it will automatically take me to the Japan Google page. I'm thinking maybe the websites can tell its a JDM phone......is there a way to change the home location or anything like that? Could that also be the cause of homepages not loading? Btw the hompepage can be set to any thing like rogers site, google, hotmail etc... it dosent matter it just wont load.

Posted by: kaizoku_san

I haven't found a way to make it load properly. I get the same thing. Gateway error, then I need to just type in a different URL and it works. And no.. you can't change it so that google shows up in English. It always redirects you.

If you really need it in English, there's a link for "English Mode" on the page.

Posted by: bananas03

No problem guys, I hope it helped, and no, you can't load the wap page using the short cut key. I believe it's because it's embedded into the firmware since it's still a vodaphone branded device. As for the Google page, after I changed the language option to english everything was fine even after exiting.
Now if I can figure out why my MMS setting are'nt working, even though no delivery report error came up!!

I'm sorry, if yis903unposubl won't say it, I will.

Are you blind? Not only have people posted many WAP settings before, but look at what bananas03 said at the beginning of the post:

Hello again everyone. Does anyone know of anybody who got the MMS working for the 903 on Rogers?

Posted by: moonmojo

Coolandmellow If you expect to get an answer from this forum in regards to settings, forget it. They will spend as much time writing a reply telling you to search the forum as it takes to answer the question. So in reality, they have wasted more of my time on this forum telling people to search the forums than the people asking the questions.
If setting up the phone for internet is so easy, then why hasn't someone posted the Cingular settings WITH the proper correlation to the 903's settings? I can tell you what Cingulars settings should be but it's not obvious where you apply them in the phone. I've tried every which way but loose. Search the forum as they will suggest. You will not find it. I know you are looking for T-Mobile settings but you may run into problems when you try to apply them. I know I am not the only one having trouble with Cingular settiings. I have had people PM me asking if I have resolved the issue. So, if one you condescending "go search the forum" guys is so smart, then post the whole solution not half of it.

why don't you try using logic to figure out where the settings go depending on the phone and the service. it's really not that hard to figure things out on your own once you've already got the basic information. If you can't figure out where each setting goes where, then you probably shouldnt be a member of howardforums. not trying to be condescending or rude, but come on man...

Posted by: moonmojo

Great, another smart guy with no answers. If you don't know, then don't post.

There is something either wrong with my Cingular service or the settings are wrong. I will not know until someone who has it working posts the settings and how they relate to the 903. Cingular will not talk to you if you do not have a phone they support. This would be helpful to quite a few people who may not as well be worthy of the Howard Forums but need to know nevertheless.

Incidently, what does it take to be a member of the Howards Forums? A EE not good enough?

type "cingular wap" on the search button then press enter. there you go noob. enjoy your 903.

Good Grief!!

I HAVE done that! I know the CIngular Settings. I am just trying to verify I have the settings as they relate to the phone correct. I will try to make this as easy as possible. Please fill in the blanks. This should pertain to Cingular Only. Make up a Profile and Access Point Name

<Web Settings>

This would be appreciated by all the silent noobs who need to know. I think people have lost sight of the fact that this thread started out to be a "How To" for the 903. So this is a "How to" set up your 903 for Cingular service.

Posted by: yis903unposubl

moonmojo stop being a troll.

that said, what are the cingular settings that you have...post them and i'll fill in the blanks for you, since you can't seem to figure it out.

as for the T-Mobile posts from the previous page (and this is getting annoying). They've been posted...numerous times. They work! If you can't get them to work, make sure you have no typos, make sure it's activated, and make sure YOU UNDERSTAND THAT IT WILL NOT FIND T-MOBILE HOT ZONES HOMEPAGE, YOU MUST SEARCH FOR A KNOWN WORKING WEBSITE SUCH AS GOOGLE.

I'm not flaming you or anything, it's just annoying when you're pointing fingers at other users, when you're asking for help!

Posted by: yis903unposubl

coolandmellow,

the T-MOBILE USA Settings have been posted. They work. If you cannot get them to work double check your work. Make sure it's active, make sure you search for a known working URL. I'm not trying to be a **** to you, but you've posted about this 3 or 4 times, and each time they've told you it's been posted (and not just on one page!). If you look through this very thread, you will see that I couldn't figure out the 'net settings either...and all the work I went through to even find the correct settings and enter them.

Use the thread!

Posted by: totaltoanage

they do work cause i have the same exact settings on my phone using tmo.

I'm not trolling. I am extremely appreciative of the information provided on this forum. It's a great resource. But, you want annoying? Well I'm frustrated by the patented "go search the forums response" and non value added comments that just take up space when people need help. Here is a subject that has never been posted. I'm challenging someone to give an answer with substance. Why is that so hard? I believe you yourself started this thread with the intentions of creating a "how to" I asked the question four or five posts ago and I'm still no closer to the answer. I appreciate your offer to help so here is what I have. And BTW these are not the only Cingular settings you will find posted. This is just one set that I found.

i know this has probably been covered but:

if your provider has a roaming agreement with docomo or vodafone, then your phone will be able to roam in that other country so long as your provider has given you permission to do so.

i put a foma sim into my 802se while in Japan and it worked.

i put my fido sim into my 802se while in japan and it didn't work. but that is only because I didnt ask fido ahead of time for roaming permission.

Posted by: yis903unposubl

Q: Where did you get your LCD Remote?
A: I got it for free when I bought the phone from a friend, so I don't know. You can get it on eBay and VODAFONE.co.jp.
Q: Does your 903SH work in USA (and related questions)?
A: Yes, it works in USA and on networks using SIM Cards. I'm using T-Mobile. It works here because it was unlocked to work here.
Q: How do I get my GPRS Internet to work (I can't take full credit for this answer, but here it is)?
A: Go to Main Menu\Connectivity\Internet Settings\... From here, your APN and Proxy settings will differ by service provider. You should be able to find the settings on your carrier's website. For those of you with T-Mobile USA (Credit for T-Mobile USA goes to me, and they do work):
Proxy Settings
Proxy Name: T-Zone GPRS
Proxy Address: 216.155.165.050
Access Point: %-Zone GPRS

For Rogers (Incomplete information, someone else can fill in the blanks) (Credit for Rogers settings goes to szeto and bananas03; kaizoku_san got it working with these settings, so they do work):
Primary IP: 208.200.067.150

After searching through this very thread (how aggrevating is this!) here are Cingular USA's settings (and I take full credit for this, because I remember GOOGLE'ing it) Enjoy, you lazy bastards:
Account type: GPRS data
Name: [enter descriptive name; e.g., "GPRS WAP"]
APN: wap.cingular

Password: CINGULAR1 (must be all uppercase)

Response timer: 150
Regardless of your service provider, after all this has been entered in, go to Web Settings and make sure to Activate it.
Q: Why doesn't my Phone Book sort Alphabetically (and related questions)?
A: The phone doesn't seem to like US SIM cards. You will have to manually enter all your phone numbers into the handset, and have the phone book read off of the handset, and not the SIM card. You can do this by going to Phone Book\Settings\Phone Book Location. Furthermore, the phone won't read in English Alphabet, it reads by Japanese Katakana: A I U E O, KA KI KU KE KO, etc.
You can however change the "Reading Order" so that it will list in some type of english alphabetical order. (Credit to Timsta).
Q: My 903SH Froze, how can I fix this?
A: I'm not really sure what causes this. It happened to me to. Here's the situation. I took the 64MB MiniSD out and put in a 1GB MiniSD. I know the phone formats it. I turned off the phone to go inside a hospital. Upon turning it on when I left, the phone's responses were very sluggish, and would eventually freeze. All I coudl do is turn the phone off by removing the battery, and turn it back on. In the end, I remedied it by quickly changing the Language to English. When I did so, everything was back to normal. I then changed the Language back to Japanese. I haven't had the problem since. As to why this happens, I'm not sure, though I believe I read someone else had the same problem after having their phone format a MiniSD and turning it off and then on.
Q: Where can I get more Themes (and related questions)?
A: As far as I know, there's only 3, and they came with the phone. I understand only the Japanese version came with more than one, and so the rest of you are stuck with the sunflowers. Where can you get more wall paper? Just about anywhere...take a picture of something. The resolution is 240 x 320. I'm making a small collection of my own, go to www.photobucket.com, search for MeGaMaNxTc, then choose 903SH Wallpapers. I'll take reasonable requests for wallpapers.
Q: My SMS Text Messaging doesn't work (and related questions).
A: I'm not sure how to fix this...mine worked just fine after I put the SIM Card in. Here's some Do's & Don'ts for your SMS. First, don't type in anything but Single Byte English characters. Second, don't enter anything in the Subject Line. Japanese 903SH does not have T9 Text, so yes, you will have to type like a 90's cell phone and rapidly press keys to get your desired letters.
Q: How do I use the Answering Machine?
A: This has become an increasingly common question. Go to Call Log\Answer Phone\Switch On/Off. Then set your Answer Time to anything before your voicemail clicks on. I've found this to be 20 seconds for T-Mobile. Warning: If you're using your phone with English Language, then the Answering Machine is in English. But if you're using your phone in Japanese, the Answering Machine will answer in Japanese. I've had a few people just hang up, because they don't understand what it's saying. Either let your friends know that your phone is answering in Japanese, or just keep your phone in English.
Q: How do I delete messages from my answering machine?
A: While listening to your answering machine, open up the menu. There should be an option to delete the message.
Q: Does 903 have T9? Which languages are on my phone?
A: Japanese version does not have T9. UK and Chinese versions do have T9. They all have predicitive text (IE. if you type a word in Japanese, and change it to a kanji, it will remember which kanji's you use frequently). I don't know how Chinese works, because I don't know Chinese.
The languages on the Japanese version is Japanese and English letters. UK version has various European Langauges (just think English letters with funny squiggly marks on top of them). Chinese has English and Chinese.
My $0.02 on this: If you do a lot of texting, don't get the Japanese version, since it doesn't have T9, and non-Japnaese phones will not receive a text message sent in Japanese at all. The Japanese version is more of a novelty phone outside of Japan, since a lot of it's functionality won't work outside of Japan.
Q: Which Beta Unlock is most stable?
A: In order of stability: UK, Chinese, Japanese.
Q: What is the Maximum Size MiniSD I can use?
A: 1GB.
Q: My Japanese 903 won't play Mp3's! How am I supposed to listen to music?
A: Use Apple's iTunes (free from www.itunes.com) to convert your mp3's or CD tracks into AAC format. This will work.
Q: How do I make my keys light up?
A: From your phones main menu, go to Settings\Display\Backlight\Time\any of those settings. Magically, your keys now light up this ugly amber color! If you turn off your phone, or the battery dies, you will have to do this again.
Q: My phone doesn't ring/It doesn't ring very loud.
A: Hold down the # key. Manners Mode should activate. Hold down the # key again. Manners Mode will turn off. Your ringer (if it's turned on) should work now). The 903 by nature doesn't ring very loudly. Turning of Surround adds a few dB to your tone.
Q: My photos come out blurry, is there a way to increase the shutter speed?
A: You will have to work on stability of your hand! There isn't a way to increase the shutter speed per say, but you can change the type of photo being taken. Sports theme seems to reduce blurring.
Q: Can you turn the Shutter Sound off?
A: No.
Q: How do I get games on my phone?
A: You have to download them on your phone, from the internet. .JAD and .JAR files work. There are also many applications. There are many sites that have been posted, but may I suggest www.airlogo.com/gj_mirror_1/mobile/software#main. There are applications other than games there that you may find useful.
Q: How can I get videos to play on my phone?
A: They must be .asf or .3gp format. .asf is probably better clarity, but given the limited space on the phone, I choose .3gp every time.
Q: How do I make photo-caller-ID?
A: The photo must be resized. There is an option while viewing your photos to resize for Incoming Call.
Q: How many mp3's/photos/movies can my phone/MiniSD hold?
A: Do the math, here's the conversion rates:
8 bits are equal to 1 byte.
1,024 bytes are equal to 1 kilobyte (KB).
1,024 kilobytes (KB) are equal to 1 megabyte (MB or Meg)
1,024 MB are equal to 1GB.
Q: Is there a way to remove the VODAFONE LIVE! Icon from my idle screen?
A: No, however, Japanese Firmware only shows the Vodafone Icon. It does not show the Icon and then say Live! That is why some photos show this, and your phone may have the whole VODAFONE LIVE!
Q: The Mobile Light and the Small Light do not light up when I have missed calls/voice mail/text messages.
A: It's supposed to, but the beta unlock doesn't support them.

Well, there goes 38 minutes of my lunch break. I hope you all appreciate me highlighting the questions and the GRPS names for you to find easier. Hopefull some people will actually read this before posting the "how do I make my T-Mobile work...why does my phone...how do you turn on your keys?" etc.

I'm sure I left a lot of things out that have been covered, but this is the most obvious ones, and the ones that are asked more than others.

Hey, It's one of the lazy bastards.

I have search this site and google. I have tried those settings as well. Yes I go to web settings to activate, Yes I tried a known good URL. Everything works fine on my treo so I know the service is active. It just doesn't work with my phone. Before I write off my phone as a lemon, would someone concur that the Cingular settings provided by yis903 work?

Thanks (crawling back into my hole)

My cingular settings work fine. If you want the excat settings that i have PM me.

I gotta give you a round of applause for taking 38mins of your precious launch break to write all that out!!

There's nothing wrong with my phone. I guess you missed my post from two pages ago:

I know I've changed the homepage before, but probably with some other settings that I messed around with.

bananas03, you are a life saver! Thank you SO much! This is also based on my own stupidity, and I feel ashamed for it, but THANK YOU!!!

No biggie though! I'm just happy I got them working.

This confirms that the T-mobile, Cingular, Rogers, and Fido settings all work. So for anyone who says they don't.. you're just doing something wrong.

Posted by: yis903unposubl

it wasn't aimed at you, it was for moonmojo, as to why he can't seem to get his GPRS working.

Posted by: Timsta

lol ha ha. well put.. well put. but the search engine does blow on hofo lately.. not sure why.

but its true.. we've gone over.. fido, tmobile, cingular and rogers settings for 902sh and 903sh.. way back.. like back into april. thats why.. when lots of reuglar users.. get so frustarted when ppl can't find them.

Posted by: coolandmellow

Finally, thank you. Mr Rogers has definately drawn the line and and delivered. This is what i ment by being exact and precise as seen on 903 menu, not the ones on the bloody T Mobile support page cause that doesn`t mean sh....t.I`m not offended at all,i think you`re quite funny actually and humorous.I ddin`t have time to look for setings on the forum here and i was just looking for the precise menu settings.I dont like to waist time with trial and error for too long, but thanx anyway someone actuall came through cause thats how i answer my questions not like goto T mobile`s support page or cingular`s support page.Sayanora

Posted by: coolandmellow

OK Here is an interesting question, when these hackers, crackers, wackers whatever write a firmaware why don`t they get rid of all the glitches and allow all functions of a phone or rather write a firmware that will enable all hardware capabilities of the phone on one firmware. For example allow internal answering machine, themes all ENglish Japanese, chineese firmware functions in one.If they can remove the theme choice from the menu and the jap answering option from the menu then theoretically they can remove the vodaphone amblem or sign what have you or allow all functions in one phone.I really don`t understand why these electronic experts or gurus can`t do this simple task. Its their area of expertese,is it not?

Posted by: totaltoanage

you wouldnt ask this if they did it already. you think its easy to hack the firmware, thats its sooo easy. most of them are in hong kong and work together on a separate forum.

Posted by: DjTraNcEFoRmeD

Coolandmellow, since you want this ideal firmware, maybe you should make it instead of complaining about why other people haven't done it.

Exactly! You don't understand it. It is their area of expertise. Why they can't do it? To put it in layman's terms: It's like trying to push that square block through the triangle shaped hole. It won't work.

If you're interested in trying to do it, learn how it's done, and do it. This is not a flame, but if you're not educated in the matter, don't try to criticize something you don't understand.

Posted by: coolandmellow

If i coudl i would and if i was a rich like a billionaire i would give someone large amounts to do it just for fun heheh.

Posted by: yis903unposubl

before anyone flames him, this is getting way off topic.

coolandmellow, that question should be posed in a separate thread.

Posted by: Blt4424

This may sound strange but, has anyone tried to wax the front of their 903? Heh, mine has little hairline scratches in it that you can only see in the right light, but it annoys me that my baby has all those scratches.

Someone who has a spare or something should try it out, I don't want to mess mine up.

Posted by: BMWFilms

I wouldn't trust those car waxes on the plastic and other things like Brasso might be too strong.

hahahahaha waxing your cell phone.. now thats hilarious

Anyway, I'm glad you found the settings. It's good that someone "came through" for you. I didn't mind the trial and error method though.

About the phone waxing.. I did it to the screen of my NEC N840 before, as suggested by acl88, and it worked wonders. I used Car Caranuba Wax, I believe.
