Rip we're talking about the Japanese version manual, not the stupid European version manual. The Japanese manual is three times as think as the European one and far more detailed.

^that is sooooo true, the european manual just sums up the important functions, but i don't recall it mentioning things like how u can add those frames on your internal pix or picture editor

Yep exactly, it's very summed up and is a pathetic excuse for a manual. I don't know how they go and just summarise their phones features so badly.

turn off the surround sound on your phone. then you can either edit the mp3s and make it louder or use some other proggie to tweak it.

Answer: In case you're curious, yes, this happened to me this morning, when going to the hospital. As you know, there's all those signs telling you to turn off your cell phone inside. You can now put it back into the langauge it was in before if you like. This should've fixed it.

Hey, yis903unposubl i encountered teh exact same problem as you just a couple of days ago, ie when it starts really slow and most of the time just crashes completely, somehow sometimes if i play around with it alittle, it doesnt crash, and then its ok until i turn it off and back on again, i tried your solution but i have the newest UK firmware which has all the europeans languages and just changing them around still doesnt fix the problem. Have you had this problem since the first time you fixed it? should i be worried or is it just a firmware problem (maybe not flashed properly etc). And could you please suggest some solutions for me to try and maybe fix it?

For me whenever I get this problem of the phone hanging after switching it on, all I do is go to the File Manager and view my images. That stops the phone from hanging, although why I have no idea.

its really quite interesting, first i thought it was a fault with the firmware, this problem probably first started after i turned on my phone once and a txt came in , by going to it too quickly it allowed the phone to freeze and it all went down hill. Before i got a chance to try to master reset etc, this ahppened again yesterday when i got another txt after turning on the phone, and now the phone has magically fixed itself and does not have any problems starting up etc. I cant understand why, unfortunately i fear somehow it might happen again sometime in the future.

my phone has the sx833 firmware, does anyone know how can I use 3gp as ringtone?
I've heard that it's louder than mp3, I've put some in the sd card but for some reason I couldn't see it in the phone

My problem is that I can't get the stock 64mb mini SD card recognized or formatted by the phone. When I plugged it into the phone, it said "Memory card inserted", then I checked "Memory card" under "Memory status", there were all straight 0% and 0KB.

Any suggestions?

it formatted your card. you lost all the info on it. try putting into your laptop and see if norton unerase can recover anything.

Hi

I have a sharp 903sh, originally bought from Hong Kong, but I sent the phone to England and they flashed the EURO firmware to it. I wanted to do it but also I had to because the software was messed up.

Now, when I try to put GPRS/MMS settings and save them, the phone says "entered setting information has not been registered" and I can't save the settings. There is some settings that I haven't put there, "contract wap", "contract mms" etc. and they have vodafone settings. I can't delete those settings. I wonder if there's some limitations in this software or something, although there shouldn't be? I have, of course, a finnish sim-card and I can call & send messages and all so it's not locked. Anyone know what should I do, or should I just forget gprs/mms/email?

When I bought this phone it had messed up FW so I don't know that did it work with the HK software, I'm about to ask the previous owner of the phone...

Nope. Didn't work. Still there are the contract settings and I can't delete them. Don't you know anyone else with the same problem I have? I assume you have seen quite many 903's..

Edit: No problems anymore, I was dumb. Now I know how to save the settings, but other thing is to get the right settings. That's a problem I can't solve here. Thanks anyway.

I'm sorry to intrude on this Thread,but, can somebody give me some advice ?
I purchased a Sharp 903sh Phone. I was told by Verizon that as long as it was a CDMA Phone, it could be connected. (This is my first Cell Phone- as you probably can tell). Now, Verizon tells me the Phone can't be used on their Network !
I looked behind the Battery but I don't know where the ESN # is ? Can anybody tell me ? I'm trying to get a final answer from Verizon.
I suppose, nobody is using Verizon with their Phones right ? Thanks.

your phone is a GSM as well as WCDMA (3G), and will not work for verizon network.

as kms mentioned. it is a CDMA to an effect.. but a WCDMA. unfortunately.. you may have to discontinue your service or just get a new line. and be like an important guy when both phones ring.. be like.. hey.. hold on.. my other line is ringing..

it has to be saved on the phone's memory to be able to play ringtones i believe on the JP firmware!

Yeah... I didn't specify the negatives in the JP version, because they were irrelevant to the article (it's aimed at an Aussie audience that won't touch the JP version).

So, the two disadvantages with the JP firmware are no POP3 email support, and you can't set MP3/AAC files as ringtones.

how can i level up the volume of the voice msg tht was recorded ???
i've alrdy selected 'volume- link to profile' and maximized the volume for everything but still when i listen to the voice msg that was recorded the volumes still very low

i also tried the side volume keys (up and down)
any suggestions???
and also there is no way arrange the contact list in the phonebook to show up alphabetically?

Larrikin there is, but it only works on older 903s that can do the DRM trick. Search on the forum for it as I don't remember the method, but it's here somewhere (also known as the IMA DRM trick). Forgot to mention that the 903SH JP version doesn't support MP3 files at all; only AAC ones, and doesn't support AAC ringtones without that trick.

Not exactly. BIG NEGATIVE FOR JAPANESE VERSION: No T9, and the phone book sorts by reading order, not alphabetically!

And if you have a lot of contacts, and are not using Japanese to write names, this can take a long...long...time. だよね?

Is there absolutely no dictionary for English words? I know on my phone if I type something in thats not in the dictionary it'll appear later on when I'm typing a new message. Does the Japanese version do this, it just starts off with no words in it?

Also how is the HK firmware? Is it just like the Japanese or European firmware or does it have its own set of negatives and pluses?

nope, it won't do it at all. it has predictave text for japanese, which works great if you're doing text messaging in japanese, but guess what? if the person you're sending the message to doesn't have a japanese phone, it shows up completely blank on their phone unless u use english letters.

therefore, (and i've said this before), unless you're heavy japanese user, or majority of your phone book is japanese people, then you're better off with UK version!

Yes I forgot about the text prediction, there's no support for English T9 at all on the JP firmware. All you can do is triple-tap.

I just have 2 questions for my UK firmware 903

1. Which video mode is better? ASF or 3GP, i'm thinking it just comes down to your preference for format for playing on the computer?

2. In camera mode, why can i only optical zoom? my friends phone can optical zoom, then if you keep pushing zoom it goes digital?

3. I found on page 9 there is a Answering machine function, and YES i did search the howard fourm , and i found people saying that for the 902 answering machine function it only comes with the Japanese firmware, I'm assuming since i can't find it that my UK firmware won't have it? or am i just looking in the wrong places?

1. People say ASF, others say 3GP. I personally prefer 3GP as it will save using filenames with the date in it, rather than MOL001.ASF.

2. You can only optical zoom at the highest resolution. If you pick a lower resolution then you can digital zoom as well.

3. Answering machine function is only on the JP firmware, unfortunately.

withheld call is the same as private number or number blocked etc....just means that the caller has prevented the caller ID from displaying their number.

Answering Machine is a useless idea. It eats up your air time. I'd rather it just go to voicemail. Do you really want some girl in a British accent/Japanese language saying no one can answer right now, leave your message after the beep so badly that you sacrifice those expensive minutes?

Everything that's been deemed "superior" in the Japanese firmware is purely aesthetic! The best redeeming factor to it is the ability to hide the carrier's id, and the bar at the bottom. It "looks" that much nicer. They all perform the same, and IMHO, unless you read/write Japanese, and majority of the contacts in your phone book are Japanese, you're better off with a UK version.

(OK, all that was more than I meant to say, I just wanted to put out that bit about the answering machine being useless; however, upon checking my PM's, I have 3 asking me, "Why is the Japanese Version Better than the Others?")

I tried "save link as" and it says..."unsupported format type".. and I tried to just go to that URL..and ti says requrested page not found..

I am using EURO fw....

so....how do I download games? or...download a file with the 903 ?

hi i converted my mpgs and .dat files into mp4 and 3gp and i put it into my mini sd card for my 903 and it cannot play it. Can anyone help me out?

ALso, i want to put gif images as my wallpaper but it cannot exceed 300kbs, is there a way to get around this? thanks.

yeah i put it in my videos, what do you mean by refresh? How do you refresh it? I converted my videos with WinAVi btw.

ok... thisis weird... i have both chinese and english songs on my 1 gig card... there's probably a total of 100 songs... why does my 903 Uk firmware only pick up 51 of the songs? and its not the chinese names of the songs because bout 5 of the 51 songs are chinese (w/chinese ID3 tags or not) and the rest are english songs.. but not ALL the english songs...

my 902 read at least 90 of the songs...

Hi,
My question is( This is my first Cell Phone). I haven't hooked up with a Carrier yet and I want to partially use/set-up the Phone (it's fully unlocked);e.g., select the English text option and use the Camera. Can I do this without being "Carrier Connected " yet ?
I charged up and pressed the Silver Button and I go to a screen that shows
water dropping into a lake. Is this the "Stand by screen" ? I can't get anywhere from there. I don't know where the "Settings" are ? THANKS.

Hi,

Thanks for the data but I have two questions:

1) In my 903SH I have so many settings menus that it is not even funny, can you tell me in which one to enter the data? (MMS Settings, Internet Settings, etc.etc.)

2) My 903SH is a Jap model (I think) the user id: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM does not fit! I can only enter 16 characters... any idea?

Could someone tell me what's the specifications for setting mp3 as ringtones? size? format? I tried to save a mp3 as a ringtone but for some reason the handset manager doesn't recognize it. It doesn't show up in the box thingy w/ the list of files. Also, when i upload a .wav file into my phone, it gets converted into a amr file and can't be set as a ringtone. >.<

I don't know much about mp3 rings for UK (I have JAP fw), but I do know that only Japanese fw has full screen wallpapers, and you can't hide operator name for UK. That's only for HK and JPN firmware.

As for the rings, maybe try having it 30 seconds or less (not sure of exact length), and try putting it on the memory card, then transfer to the phone. It's much easier than the software.

I have euro firmware, I download mp3s (128kps, 44khz) and use mp3 splitter to cut the part of the song i want...my ringtones are usually 30sec-45sec long. I just use bluetooth and transfer it to my phone, it detects it and i can assign as ringtone.

I can send you a sample of a recent chinese song i cut and using as mp3 if you want? PM me.

full wall paper not available for UK fw. BUT...if u r on 1.046 UK fw,its your lucky day. Follow this thread to Remove the operator icon. But do it at your own risk...Many people have done it, I have done it..and i think u will too!

tell me this. Do you have japanese characters on your keypad, if yes, then it is originally a JP Fw. I think that's the easiest way to check it.

Okay, you can do the edit seen here, but your mileage may vary and its at your own risk. The same way they did that is also the same way they can get the sharp 903 to sync with a memory card so you can download games from a miniSD card. The link to that one is this one.

They should work, since so many people have done those two edits, for the authority on this, you should bug Timsta.

As stated earlier, YMMV and do it at your own risk. I wouldn't wanna see a pouting_girl become a sad pouting_girl with a broken/bricked 903.

to play mp3's, i just finally figured it out, haha you need to make sure the songs are not variable bit rate, and that they are under 192kbs... i don't thik u can tell the songs are vbr just by looking at them... so what i did was i used DMC Music converter and just converted all my songs to 128kbs and non variable... now they all play

... only problem is that if you have chinese IDE tags... they become gibberish... *sigh* what i'd do for a computer that's in chinese anyways yap.. i got some chinese ringtones too, we should trade lol, i'm too lazy to cut my songs up haha

Yeah, still no English manual yet. Sharp are notorious for taking forever with the English manual...

Anyway, the mail backup is accessible from the Memory Card -> Backup menu in the Connections tab under Settings. Just select Mail from the list, and it should backup both SMS and MMS to the memory card.

This may sound like a very stupid question but, how can I search the content just of this sub-forum?

I was looking for messages related to the problem I am having in installing the USB driver for my 903SH on my desktop.

When I go to search forums I am allowed to select SHARP and its sub-folders BUT not just this one. Due to the size of it the search is almost impossible.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

3GP best way? sure

1- Get sd card
2- Get sd card reader
3- download / make some 3 gp of your own
4- put sd card in sd reader
5- put usb cable from sd card reader to computer
6- open the sd card and go to " video gallery"
7- get your other file either drag and drop or copy and paste
8- remove your sd card
9- put your sd card in your fone
10- press the middle button
11- move right one to gallery
12- go down to video
13- select your video and voila ... you got it

i think thats detail enough if not i can run you thru installing your computer too

It's all greyed out and won't let me make a new one and without that I can't set up my internet. I even looked at the online pdf and I couldn't figure it out. Any help would be great!

its under the connectivity menu then internet settings all in there how to exactly do it? i duno i dunt use wap but its all in there simple as plug it in =D

With my new phone I have also received its own CD with the desktop software. I have just purchased for a few $$ the USB cable via EBay.

When I first launch the CD it opens a box with four options:

1) Install USB Driver
2) Install Modem Driver <I>(I don't know the application for this one...)</I>
3) Install Handset Manager
4) Exit

Selecting 1) prompts you NOT to connect the phone until so told, I did that and clicked continue, next comes the "Choose Setup Language" - I selected English.

InstallShield Wizard opens up and welcomes you to the installation for the SHARP 3G/GSM USB Driver Ver 3.0.0

I clicked next. I agreed with the License Agreement, I then selected the default destination folder: C:\Program Files\SHARP 3G GSM USB Driver\SHARP 3G GSM USB Driver 3\ and clicked next. The Program prepares to install the driver and a new warning box pops up saying that if the Software Installation screen (WinXP) message appears to continue the installation. Again, I clicked OK.

HERE IS WHERE IT GETS TRICKY a box opens that reads:

Please perform the following steps to complete the installation.
1) Power on your 3G series phone.
2. Attach the phone to the USB port of your PC with a 3G series USB cable.
3) When the Found New Hardware Wizard screen appears, select No not this time and then click Next.
4) Click Next in the new screen to start the PnP installation. Please note that during the USB driver installation the Hardware Installation screen (in Windows XP) may appear. If this occurs, please click Continue Anyway to continue the installation.
5) After clicking Finish in the completing the Found New Hardware Wizard screen, click Next at this screen to complete installation.

At this point I connected the phone to the computer, the PC (desktop Sony VAIO) detected the new hardware WX-T91

As mentioned before, the Found New Hardware Wizard opened up and I proceeded as instructed above. After clicking next (point 3 above) the system started to look throughout the system for the driver and then a new box opened that said:

Cannot locate the driver....

I tried to point it to the location without success and so... I had to abort the installation.

Any suggestions?

With me, all I had to do is a MASTER RESET (remember default code is 9999) - after I did that I had a small panic attack because everything came up in Chinese/Japanese could not tell, but somehow I was able to navigate through to set the language to English and then it was smooth sailing from there.

I think it's best that you download the software off sharp site. Incase the driver on the CD is a different one than the one you need...

but what do i know. maybe tim could help you better. =P

One of the 903 i had had grey'ed out APN too. I tried master resetting it but it didn't work. Mine was a Jan 2006 edition which i guess comes with firmware restriction. I gave up and returned that phone. =\

i think when you are using the handset manager via BT, there is an option as to where you would like to upload your files. for example, when you are using the file manager, the top window will display the folders of your phone, and under each folder, you have the option of saving to handset memory or to minisd memory. hope that helps.

1. to koda and anybody else i was having some problems with mms too. I went to Smart center and they said that they can't configure the mms and the 3g coz Sharp is not in their list of phones and that the APN is also grayed out.

I just buy it a few days ago, I found a lots of problem I don't know how to solve, I have been reading this thread for 30+pages, but I still can't find what I'm looking for, so i wanna ask a few questions here, hopefully someone can help me asap

My 903 is a white one with japanese input keypad, but have HK firmware, the seller I bought from change the firmware for me.

Q1. Is that no possible for me to change themes? Do i have to stick with this ugly smartone red colour themes?

Q2. I tried to input both acc and mp3 songs, they play well but can't use as ringtone. I convert them to even 64kbps still not working?

I have tired to trim down the mp3 to 76kb, and its last about 28second
still doesn't work, error message : illegal file.

I can play mp3 and acc, but the phone don't let me choose acc as ringtone

Just fantastic, a new problem!

My 903SH is a Jap beta unlock - was working OK-ish: calling OK, send/receive SMS, send MMS. Can not receive MMS. Internet OK. I'm on Cingular. Somewhere I've read this is a known problem (?). Anyway, it worked good enough for me not to fuss with it.

So the other day I suddenly stopped being able to send/receive SMS. I'm not sure exactly when this happened, but it was within a day of when I changed the speedial #1 to be my voicemail.. .that is in fact the only change I've made in a long time to the phone.

The phone doesn't appear to really 'try' to send - the error message (which is not very helpful) comes back so fast it's almost immediate. I can't receive anything either. Frustrating, I need this to work.

Question 1: I'd like to try to undue the voicemail/speeddial change to see if somehow I did something which caused the problem. Can someone send me the default settings? They are under settings -> call settings -> voicemail. I have changed the voicemail # and the "access voicemail" numbers... there is a 'home mailbox' and a 'roam mailbox' which I changed... I'm not sure why this would affect SMS but I thought I'd try to eliminate something.

Question 2: did Cingular change their messege center or anything else recentely? Anyone else having a problem?

Question 3: should I just ditch the JP beta unlock? I really miss T9, and which I could receive SMS. The themes are cool, and I enjoy confusing people with the answering machine, but really I do not need this stuff. Can someone recommend the UK or HK firmware?

could be the centre SMS # has changed on your 903. find out if its the same number as in your tm200. or ask your cingular provider what the number is and input it in your 903

I tried to do searches on if they have released an unlock for new 2006 903sh(CID73?) and all it came up with was that there were speculation that it would come out in April. I couldn't find any up to date info on this subject. The unlock has been released correct? How can you tell what version number you have?

thanks. I think I am going to buy the 903sh here in japan. yay! If I can find it, don't think they produce it anymore, it's hard to find...

Also, I have one more question. When I bring it back to the states and unlock it do I use a tmobile sim card or do i need to buy a USIM card?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I was wondering if the new hk firmware still supports AAc ringtones because I just can't seem to get them to work. DO they only support mmf now? If so is the yamaha one the only decent one out there? I'd rather convert my mp3's to mmf's instead of mp3->wav->mmf. thanks.

It's -supposed- to support AAC. Mmf quality seems to always sound crap though, duno if it's just me..

now does the iTunes trick also work on the 902sh with japanese firmware converting the songs to aac or m4a formate? Because I think that mp3 files won't play on the jap firmware of the 902.

iTunes just has a nice built in MP3-> AAC converter..

Jap firmware has annoying DRM, and whatnot, or unless you wanna fiddle with the Pana Reader and SD Jukebox.. then just use iTunes to convert your mp3's to aac. Simple.. just takes a bit of time for the convert.. which is why, i don't use Jap!

oh man so its not even worth getting the 902 w/ jap firmware on it, cause I am thinking of getting it for the mp3 player but if that DRM crap is a pain, but i can still use the "mp3 player" which is a aac player instead by just using the iTunes program and convert the songs to aac format and i'll be all set right?
