What is the best smartphone for use with Verizon Wireless? I'd like to try and use the new Orange phone and like the SMT 5600, but I know they don't work on the Verizon system. Is there any good phone for use on Verizon? Can the samsung be upgraded to the latest version of Windows Mobile?

Thanks!

The only one they have is the Samsung one as of now. They maybe getting the Motorola Q sometime in december.

Cool phone. Looks like it should be here sometime in January of 06. Do you know if the samsung can be upgraded? It might be a good in-between phone if it can be upgraded to the latest version of Windows Mobile.

Verizon has had the same Samsung i600 Smartphone for several years now. It is dated by several years and Verizon is still charging $450 which is hard to believe considering its age. I'd look at the Samsung i730 PPC Phone or look for the upcoming Treo for Windows Mobile in Q1 06 which is going to be exclusive for Verizon.

No, no ROM is available for that phone with WM5 and even if you could upgrade it....it would be very slow and not worth it. Your best bet is to wait for a WM5 device to come to a CDMA carrier.

The fact that the 700w has EVDO is a dead giveaway that verizon whould get it, but Sprint may to since they are expanding there own EVDO networks. In either case I won't touch the thing....

For a number of reasons, this is the phone I am waiting on. I had also read that Verizon was going to have the phone first, but I have not seen where it was going to be an "exclusive". If so, that is very interesting. Are you sure about the "exclusive" part? I really want it on Cingular with EDGE.

Yes, the Treo Windows will be exclusive to Verizon for 6 months, then other carriers...and a GSM version...so you'll have to wait until mid-2006 at the earliest for a Treo Windows on another platform...

If you want a GSM pda phone before that, you'll have to look at the Moto Q, HTC Wizard under whatever branding you prefer, or one of the many other units (most physically bigger than anything being discussed here).

Smartphones are an option if you are not looking at a full-blown PDA.

Lack of good smartphones is one of the main reasons why I jumped from Verizon..

Agreed...

The Treo for Windows Mobile being exclusive to Verizon is yet another tactic used by these carriers (i.e. Verizon) to bring more subscribers over. Plans and coverage are basically getting to be the same, so the only leverage they are getting is to woo subscribers over with the latest and greatest gadget that only they are offering!

So there is not any 3rd party smartphones (htc for example) that would work with the Verizon network? I currently have the samsung i600 but I need to get a smartphone with windows mobile 5 so I can test the new e-mail push feature on Exchange sp2 when it comes out in a month or 2. Waiting til the Treo comes out in the 1st quarter of 06 is to far away. Thanks!

The only thing that has WM5 on it is the HTC Apache PPC phone. Its only on Sprint, but it is CDMA maybe there is a way to get it to work on Verizons network...I don't know.

No, with CDMA carriers you are locked to their phones. There are no SIM cards to swap between phones. That is the beauty of GSM carriers. Don't like the phone selection? Just buy an unlocked one. It does not matter that that the carrier is not actually selling it.

Gotta say that really blows!

Yup! Thats why Europe and the rest of the world had it right 20 years ago when GSM came about. The idea that you can buy any phone and use about any carriers pre-paid SIM card purchased through any number of Mobile Shops on every street in Europe and Asia without being locked into a particular carrier.

It's mainly been the USA based carriers that have used SimLocking, long term contracts, and CDMA as a way to lock a subscriber in to their contracts and phone selections. Now, carriers such as Verizon are using announcements such as the Treo for Windows Mobile exclusive to lock you into them if you want that particular phone. Good for business? Oh yeah. Good for consumers? Nope.

it can be had on ebay for around $200. i do not think verizon carrier the i600 in their line up anymore. they discontinued the phone in preperation for the i640 which subsequently was canceled.

ironically, despite the age the phone still stands up quite well against other phones released more recently.
