Switching back to AT&T ROM before sending MPx back

Hey guys, should I change my MPx ROM back to the original one? My battery is totally dead, do I need to have a working battery to do it? Wife said that I got my SMT5600 today and need to send my MPx back. What else should I do before i send it back? Will they charge me if the phone is damaged or altered in anyway? Thanks for the help.
