Using my Siemens S40 in the UK

Hi, I currently use a Siemens S40 in America and Cingular is my provider. I am heading to the UK for a month. To use my phone there is all I have to do is replace the SIM card when I get there with one in the UK. Is there anything else I need to do/know before going? Locking codes or anything?
thanks,
Jen

you have to remove the simlock.. so if you contact cingular they will give you the code most likely and u can remove the lock.. when you goto uk.. you can just buy a prepaid sim card and pop it in your phone and ur all good to go.. everything is pretty easy except for the unlocking part... well at least it is hard in canada..

but u should be fine.. contact cingular and tell them u are going out of the country for a while and tell them you want to bring ur phone

Yeh, Cingular should be able to unlock it for you without any hassles (well, hopefully). Anyone know if Rogers AT&T would do the same?

i wish.. i really want to unlock my s40 and use it when i go on vacation this year...i called rogers and they said there is no use unlocking there phone because their rates are cheaper than buying a prepaid sim card.. they said that you also have to pay like 70 bucks a year to rent the card or something.

i think the csr was on crack

I use my S40 in the UK with a Vodaphone card. I also have a German SIM card I bought in Berlin. The phone too, I bought unlocked there for pretty cheap. Your phone should work fine once it is unlocked. I will be heading back to UK next week. For a few beers, I'll take a look at your phone... Just kidding.

They're right, everything in the UK is expensive compared to NY prices. If you want to use prepaid cards have it unlocked, you should also call to make sure you have international roaming enabled on your account. The phone performs much better on European networks, you will see an improved battery life and excellent reception in almost every location. Also go to radio shack and get a plug adapter. A converter is not needed since the s40's power supply is 100-240v. When the phone asks you to pick a network to roam on (there's like 6) pick a 900 one they have better quality. Tmobile had contracts with all the networks in the region such as orange and vodaphone, cingulair has them as well.

I called Siemens and asked them about the finer details & legitimacy of S40 Unlocked. They are offered on the WEB. CS tell me perfectly legal & warranty is in effect World-Wide. All I need is a receipt for warranty.
QUESTION: has anyone used this phone with, Virgin or Orange prepaid SIM in UK. How much for the cards & cost per minute. I don't need roaming outside of UK, so that would not be a problem.

i remember the cards being around the same price or more than the VoiceStream. Also remember that a pound is ~1.6 USD. I have roamed on those two networks and both are fine. Basically check ur rate at home and only if you find a deal get a card there. The phone acts like a phone on their networks there so it will have no problem.

t2k3, thanks for the info.
I hear that Orange & Virgin have the best prepaid deal £10 seems to buy the SIM with some mins on it. Then just buy time as you go along. Got to be cheaper then my international roaming phone @ $1.29 + tx per min & paying for incoming calls. The incoming would be the big cost for me.
S40, no anything about that one?

i believe the incoming depends but outgoing ur charged out of ur local minutes. Getting a prepaid might be worth it if you're staying longer time.

I just looked at Orange & Virgin WEB sites for prepaid, I can't see anything about using your own unlocked phone. All the stuff is about buying their phone & prepaid. Plus the incoming & rates only refer to using their phone/Card.
