What's so great about Windows Mobile?

I'm looking into getting a new phone and I don't know if I should take a look at a WM phone. What makes it better than your average phone? What can I do with these phones that I can't do with a regular phone? If my only computer is a Mac how much will that hinder me?

Windows Mobile smartphones allow you more power when it comes to things like email, web surfing, and multimedia. You can watch whole movies on smartphones, watch live TV, listen to thousands of mp3's, read ebooks, get your email instanteously updated on your phone, etc...

Another advantage is that since it is one platform, many programs have been written to take advantage of the uniform operationg system (such as games).

If you don't plan on doing ANY of that, then a smartphone is probably overkill for you.

Thanks. Email and web browsing would be a plus.

My home computer is a Macintosh. I assume you can sync some info on a WM phone with a PC. What about syncing that info with a Mac?

Posted by: Omega2008

I don't think you can, you need ActiveSync to be able to sync Pocket Outlook with Office Outlook on your computer and ActiveSync is only for Windows PC's...I think...I never seen a version for Mac's

Hmm, I don't use Outlook so I suppose that doesn't really matter. I do use the Palm Desktop program and I can export the contact list as a .txt, .csv or a couple other file formats. Could I import/export the address book on a WM phone using another file format?

Posted by: Omega2008

You can send the .csv files to your phone.

You CAN sync with Mac using a program called Missing Sync. I'll post the url so you can check it out...

Omega is 100% correct, Activesync (the program that allows your WM device to sync with your desktop) is a Windows product only and there is no Mac version. That being said, there are several Sync programs that have been written specifically for syncing a WM device with Mac, Missingsync is one of them and there are a few others. I can't reccomend any one of the other becasue I don't use a Mac but yes it is possible to sync with a Mac.

I'm sure you have a Windows PC for when you have to do real work, right? Setup Activesync on that. The Mac version I used was pretty weak IMHO.

LOL, I do have a PC at the office for "real work".

I think if I can export my contacts in a .csv file that would work fine.

Thanks for all the info everyone.

He's using a Mac; he can do some real work on a Mac. However, I'll remember your line the next time I have to talk to a Linux user.

I didn't mean to sound like that when I wrote it hehe =) I've had several Macs, and there is some real work you can do on them. I just got so tired of using RDC to use my Windows PC that I eventually made it my main PC and quit using the Mac. I completely quit using Apple products when they hosed me on getting the processors replaced on my G5... I won't buy an Apple product again now.

and you dont have to pay money for your ring tones....just drag and drop what ever song you want from your pc! i always loved that.

If you're looking at other phone in comparison, you'll find that many phones nowadays have the ability to play mp3s and videos, have expandable memory and can use email and web etc. However, almost every feature is better implemented in a WM phone.

What sets Smartphones apart is the openness of the platform. Anyone can develop for it (ask Symbian, UIQ etc developers about that ) and there are many programs available for it. Many are free, some are not.

Sweet! Sign me up.

contrary to what many people might claim, WM phones (smartphones and ppc phones) DO NOT make coffee or give back-rubs... but they can do pretty much everything else...

No, but it does offer multiple account support, you can add as many mail accounts that you want to check, all mail is delievered to a common inbox...you can set each account to check manually, or automatically, but I believe the only one that will then check automatically is the last one you accessed...don't quote me on that last part though, seem to remember reading that, but I don't use PIE, so can't say w/ certainity about the auto-check on the last accessed account issue...

Posted by: rebirth

ok although it is coming to one source when replying can you choose the address where you are sending the mesage from (as in outlook) thank again

Posted by: Omega2008

No when you get an email that was sent to lets say a Yahoo! account then when you reply it will be sent by Yahoo!. So if you wanted to reply with your Gmail account you would have to create a new message under Gmail.

Posted by: hylton

yea, what Omega said, reply is going to go back thru whatever account it came from originally...no way around that as far as I know...

but, a good idea for someone w/ some freetime and programming experience, would be a great added feature to have an email client or PIE plug-in that would allow this...
