If you get a smartphone and want your emails sent directly to you. how much extra does that usually cost in a service contract?

it depends on the carrier, I pay a flat fee of $19.99/mo for unlimted Data on T-Mobile. Its an all you can eat buffet of data that way

With Cellular One......unlimited Data is $49.99 a month. Crazy, I know. But out here in the sticks, I have no other choice.

It also depends what you mean by "sent directly to you". The unlimited data plans will allow you to check your mail as often as you want, but you have to check it or set it up to check every so often. This works with any POP compliant mail account, such as GMail.

You can also have your mail forwarded to your phone as an SMS, but that will cost you depending on your SMS package. The nice thing about this is that you do not need to check your mail to get the message. I have two GMail accounts, one for general type stuff and then one I use for important work issues. The work one I have GMail set up to forward to my SMS so I get the message asap.

How do you get your email sent to by SMS. Is it a setting in Gmail?

No you have it forward to your Cingular or T-mobile email address. Ex. yourwirelessnumber@cingularme.com or whatever it is for t-mobile. Then when set it up to send your email as a text message when you get new messages or something like that. I do know you have to set this up with your carrier email address.
