P800-day 2 - Now I know why the delay!

Hey all,

Well, I have been experimenting. I will post my results each day I do different things.

Today, I started the phone at 8 AM, and talked about 2 hours throughout the day, and it is 6PM now. Needless to say, the fool around time on the phone was greater today, due to me playing, and, gosh, everyone I saw today was amazed, and used it a few minutes. I left the voice commands on, and the Bluetooth ON. I think this is probably the most draining settings. I MMS'd about 6 pictures, and played 1/3 of a game of chess. The battery is currently at 39%. I think, not bad .... I hope it will last me till midnight tonight

But, sad to say, I had to reset the phone about 8 times today. The interface freezes, if you do certain combination of things.

If you use the camera, and the flip about the same time, the phone will freeze.

If you get SMS/MMS messages while calling out, the phone will freeze.

On a positive note, if the interface freezes while you are talking, the connection doesnt stop -- you just cant hang up, or do anything. The interface freezes a lot, not the funcitonality.

I understand the price of having a pre-production unit. But the firmware has a long way to go, to be used by non-tech heads. In defense, the phone does so much, and there are so many permutations of functions, it is not surprising how long it has taken to even get the phone to this point.

Ciao for now,

Jeff

Peter Bodor, press spokesman for Sony Ericsson in Stockholm today. said:

"The P800 will be out before Christmas in the following markets: Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Italy and Hongkong. All the other markets will start receiving it January/February 2003. The phone will be distributed through the network operators. It's up to the operators to define the pricing for the P800, depending on contracts that come with the phone. Without a contract the phone should be priced around 600 Euros."

Well, unless we see a BIG firmware upgrade before then, selling the phone with it's present firmware would be marketing suicide for SE... it's just too buggy -- I would love to think the upgrade will be in the next couple of weeks, I just don't believe it -- from this version (which I am not sure of the number), it needs at least a couple of revisions -- I have had Ericssons, and SE's now for a while, and we see they fix things in increments.

I hope for the firmware, I just don't believe the above timeline quote.

My 2nd P800 will be here Monday. Hopefully it will have some different firmware from my original as per a PM I received stating that a member had talked to Sony/Ericsson regarding the bluetooth issue and that they had phones with different S/W from that on my current P800. Otherwise, let's enjoy the fact we have something so revolutionary and feature filled. If it hangs up 8 times a day while trying to perform 3 different operations at the same time, I don't think that is so bad when you consider the speed, user interface, and capabilities of essentially at desktop PC, (I know it is not really, but it is comparable), digital camera, MP3 player, email client, video player, etc. etc....

That is why they sell it to us as a development kit so you computer "language & programing" types can find applications to fix these issues. I don't know about ya'll but I wouldn't trade mine for any phone currently available, hangs or bugs be damned..

hmmm.... I think I will wait until MARCH or APRIL to buy my P800 lol by then some bugs should be out hehehehehe (and I will have saved enough $$$ to not make a dent into my savings account --- my parents are now demanding rent -- dammit )

I absolutely agree 100% ... I love this phone !!! I did buy a Panasonic GD-55 this week to try as a backup should the P800 be too buggy at an important time in the day -- should be here this week -- it was so small, I thought it would be more fun to carry that around rather than the T68 as a backup -- let's see how it fares ... I'll put the T68i's on the backburner for a while --

I am curious as to the firmware of your new unit. How can we see the version on the P800? The old Ericsson/SE Joystick or arrow left is not on the P800, so I don't know how to access the firmware menu.

Anyone know?

And Bengal, how's your battery life been with the P800, since you've had one a little while, and with what settings active (voice command, bluetooth, etc...)?

To check your system information,
Go to applications, tap on view, tap on system information:

Mine is:
Phone: CXC162002 R!A080
Organiser: CXC162001 R1B13
Bluetooth: CXC12529 R2C

I am getting a full day of battery with more use than normal due to me constantly playing with it and exploring menus. I am using bluetooth in the "ON" position so voice dial from the headset is enabled, magic word is enabled and every 4 hours the email client activates and the GPRS turns on to check my various email clients.
Otherwise, I have my backlight, screen saver, and all other settings set conservatively with the phone going to sleep after 3 minutes of non-use.

Yes Woedee, I received my email today stating it shipped with tracking number. Since tomorrow is Saturday, I will receive it Monday morning. Thankfully, I won't have to send mine to it's new owner until Monday, so it worked out great for me.
