Once again Cingular railroads an employee...

okay, here's my story...

I tend to hang out quite often at one of the local blue stores in my area because all (well, 99% of) the employees are really nice and we have all gotten to be quite good friends.

so there's this one guy who I'll call "Bob" just for sh*ts and giggles. Bob has been with the company for roughly one year now and he's always been a very good, hard working employee. according to my buddy who is the store's manager, Bob has never given him a lick of problems and he's always done everything thats always been asked and some.

so, about four months ago, the district manager told him that he could have the soon-to-be position of a CS rep within the store. that meant that he wouldnt have to worry about making his numbers and he'd do what he's always been good at. which that is, dealing with the general public in a very professional manner with excellent people skills. so they figured he'd be perfect for the CS rep position.

fine. so then one month passes on, no word on his promotion. another month passes on and still nothing. four months have now passed and he was "advised" by the district manager that he should resign his current job and in 30 days he could reapply and the CS rep position would be his. no questions asked...

he then put in his 2 week notice and yesterday was his last day. so right before the store closed, the district manager came into their store and pulled him into the back so they could talk in private. come to realize, the DM told Bob that he would have to wait at LEAST three months before he could reapply and even then there wouldnt be no guarantees. so basically this poor guy is SOL and has been porked up the you know what and some.

now, the really sad part is that this guy knows he cant afford to be unemployed for three months. after all, who can now in days?

now, why doesnt this kind of story surprise me one bit? doesnt Cingular realize that people have feelings and that they shouldnt treat their people like dirt the way they do? good Lord, may God help this poor guy and I hope to God that his ex-employer some day gets what they have coming to them.

^ thats just sad. nothing but sad....

i want out of cingular like you couldnt believe, but the fact that i dont need to dress up for work and have the best crew around makes it very hard.

He should be able to recind his 2 weeks notice.

Posted by: strickzilla

yeah that is ****ED up cause all you do is a transfer request and apply internially. im not sure if this was an orange only store but this sounds VERY fishy

It sounds like someone had it in for him...

yea, why can't he has his old jib back? after all you said he is good at what he does so why bother training a new bee.
I applied for Cingular and did the whole phone surveh/screening test and passed and was scheduled for an interview. I never showed up because of all the threads i decided to say f it to cingular.

same reason why companies fire or terminate employees on a Friday after or close to the end of the day!!

Hoping the person will go home and vent, then cool off an move on.

I was once in this situation. I have a BS degree. After working at a company for 13 months, I was let go at 5:30PM on Friday. The employer did not give me any severance (not required by law), but did pay accrued vacation and not sick pay. Despite working through lunch almost daily, and working 9-10 hour days, the employer "felt" I wasn't owed any severance . This is despite them billing the client for my hours worked over!! They didn't give me my final check for another week (the regular payday).

They even had the nerve to dispute my unemployment claim.

I was faced with several challenges as I strive to leave any position on good terms:

a. In Ca, an employer must pay you your final check when you are terminated. The penalty is 1 days' pay for each day you are made to wait. Essentially, I an owed 3-5 days pay because their lack of understanding the law.

b. I took ZERO vacation, and the employer "claims" my vacation did not accrue until after 1 year. This was not given in writing. I was promised (in writing) 10 days vacation per year.

c. I am effectively owed 2 weeks vacation pay, plus the penalty days.

If I "push" the issue, I run the risk of the employer not providing a good reference. Although, any employer who promises certain benefits in irder to hire you, and goes back on their word, can't be trusted anyway.

My point? Employers will do anything and everything to protcet themselves and their profits. The only solution is to start and own your own business, and "do right" by your employees!!

Even when you get things in writing, someone can change their mind as MOST company's add an "at will" employment clause to all job offers and applications!!

I just got out, but now have a job working for a dealer making $1 less/hr but still making commission so it's not like there is that much difference. Wow so I make $40 less a week, so what, I don't have to worry about the ****** quotas and the non-recognition that Cingular gave me.

Yay for me.

screw working for cingular, the bigger they get the crappier the service and the more shiat employees get with all kinds of pressures. After all it is still freaking retail therefore it sucks.

Last time I checked in CA the only thing a previous employee is allowed to say is to verify employment, they can't say you were bad or left on bad terms.

Dalejr, if your manager friend really does like the employee then he should have no problem getting him his job back by actually not filling the final paper work.

If I were this kid, I would talk to HR on my exit interview. I would explain the situation and see what can be done. This sounds more like a District Manager issue rather than a Cingular issue.

Let me make a suggestion, which Noodles hit on the head. Cut out at corp and work for an agent. I work at SC Kiosks, in Sam's Club. I make hourly plus commission, and my quota is 40 phones/month (since I am full-time). If you're working full-time and can't get 40 phones out the door, you don't deserve to have a job anyways. I average 60-80, depending on the month. And any phone that leaves the store counts. Upgrades, add-ons, etc. I don't get paid on features, but I don't have any requirements on them, either. We are WAY cheaper on phone prices than any corporate store. I also have the freedom of three different carriers, Cingular, Sprint, and T-mobile. Your credit sucks? No problem, Sprint's highest deposit is $150. You hate Cingular? No biggie, I'll put you on T-mobile, and if you had a Nokia from Cingular, I'll unlock it for you. I have free phones. I have the opportunity to make $2000/month JUST IN BONUSES. Not counting commissions or hourly. I am also located inside another retail establishment, so most people don't come up there just for customer service. And it's Sam's Club, which means you have to pay to get in, which keeps most (but not all) riff-raff out. I love my job. And we're owned by RadioShack, which means that I have awesome benefits. I'd highly suggest you corp reps check out an Agent. So much less stressful, which means that you're free to sell like you should be, without so much pressure on numbers.

this is also my suggestion. I also don't see it as a Cingular issue but it does sound like the DM is the one that lied and led the employee on. If the manager likes him then the manager should work something out as much as they can.

In addition to the agent suggestion of Noodles & Rcadden (working for an agent), I'd also suggest auto sales. If you already have experience in sales, it can simply be a matter of finding a dealership willing to "train the right person". I applied to many dealerships (bring a resume when you apply) before landing a job as a salesman. Even if they don't currently have an opening or ad, dealerships frequently go through sales people (the grass is always greener) and might give you a call.

Look for a dealership that has an "ups system" and is not an "open floor", unless you have a very aggressive personality.

When I sold cars/trucks, we made 30% of the profit on everything we sold, with a minimum of $75.00 (this was 7-8 years ago), but each dealership is different. Profit was best on 4x4s, used cars and leases. In some cases, I made $700-$1,000 on some sales, but most were $200-$400 each. It was nothing to sell 20-25 vehicles a month, and the more you sell, the more referrals you received.

We had a draw system too if you had a pitiful week or rotten weather (we'd have trouble making sales if there were too many days of snow).

Don't want to negotiate with the customers? Try Saturn dealerships or No-Negotiation places.

Currently having problems with cell phone customers customers seeking repairs/customer service? -- Most car dealers have auto repair service on site and you can politely hand the customer off to the service manager.

Don't forget to apply to larger used car places too (small used car dealerships are usually staffed by the owner and his/her family).
