Would it be pointless to get a 5600 now?

im looking at switching over to cingular soon from verizon (thanks v710 lawsuit) and i was wondering if theres anything coming out soon for a reasonable price that could compare to or might be better than the 5600. i dont want to get it and then find out its out of date and theres something new coming out that i havent heard about.

i know the 6682 is out and i was thinking about waiting til that got to stores so i would know all the bugs would be fixed and all that good stuff, but its still like 100+ more than the 5600 and im in a position where 100 bucks can really sway me, but i'll pay it if it really is a much better phone and the 100+ would be well worth it.

so basically, any input you have on these 2 phones or anything else coming out like them would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

There are a number of things rumored to be coming to Cingular, but no real confirmation from Cingular on it...they supposedly have the HTC Wizard (mini-PDA) and the HTC Faraday (new version of the SMT5600) coming this fall, but as w/ all the rumors here and there on the internet, time will tell if this is accurate.

As for pricing, I expect the prices on both will be more than the current pricing on the SMT5600 and Moto MPx220, but how much more, dunno...

It's all gonna depend on when you switch over, if you can wait, wait...but if you have to move by a certain date or resign a contract, you can always pick on up 'under contract' and sell it later if you want to buy a new gadget at non-contract prices...

Of course, used prices on the SMT and MPx will likely drop once viable WM5 options are available.

If I were you, I would stick with verizon. Verizon is getting the Treo 700w which will be an exclusive for 6 months. I am even thinking of going back to Verizon for the phone.

any confirmation that the bluetooth will remain uncrippled or will they take everything off but the headset profile?

They will probably disable OBEX that is the trend verizon has been following.

Supposedly the new version of the 5600 with Windows Mobile 5 will be out Oct 13. Of course this is suppose to be a worldwide release, but things like this seem to never show up in the US at the same time. But given it is this close to release, I would wait to see. It is suppose to be an excellent phone and wouild be worth the price. I would also make the switch from Verizon to Cingular despite what someone else is saying in this forum. If you do not need a Qwerty keyboard then the new phone with Windows Mobile 5 on it will be better than the 6682.

Posted by: MYhofoUSERNAME

thanks for all the replies.

i was interested in the 700w but i dont really think i need such a pda phone...i guess i'll just wait til i can find some actual release dates and see what comes out and what doesnt.

hopefully the new 5600 type phone does come out the 13th like you said. i guess i'll just wait and find out. i have til early dec. to pick an option for the 710 suit so i'm sure a whole lotta new stuff will be out by then

any more input is still very welcome, but thanks again guys.

oh and do u have a model number of the new phone coming out like the 5600? thanks.

It's not so much a trend. They do this obviously to protect their profits from GIN, which is only available on their phones, not their PDA-phones, but they usually don't disable these features on their PDA-Phone devices; their PPC-6600 has full Bluetooth and so does the Samsung i730. You could argue that the Blackberry 7250 they offer is also "uncrippled" since they didn't disable any features. I don't know why they limited Bluetooth on the Treo 650 since they didn't do this on any other PDA.

I am going to give you the web page on a site that will be selling them in the UK in four days. As usual Europe and Asia gets it out first when it comes to a gsm phone. This is the Imate version of the phone. HTC is the actual manufacturer as with the 5600. This is very tempting to me even though I have something with a keyboard. This has WiFi also added with improvements in every area. If you like the 5600 then you are sure to like this new phone. There are going to be some other companies besides Imate putting their brand on it just like the 5600. If you want more information on which companies might be carrying it in the US then I would do a search under HTC smartphone. I cannot remember what name HTC is using for this phone. Of course you could order it from the UK and pop in your sim if you cannot wait.

One more quick followup in order to help you decide. I found that HTC calls this the Tornado. There are two versions: SP5 and SP5m. The only difference appears to be more music functions on the SP5m. Sounds like the SP5m might be the way to go if you are also into music.

Here is a website with all of the specs on the SP5. They also have the specs available for the SP5m that you can click on to the right in a box with all the phones listed. This should help you determine which one is for you. Since you seem to have liked the 5600, I think this is the way to go, especially if you are wanting the multimedia features of the s710, the SP5m would seem to be the better choice.

This is my last post. I remembered that I had read a review of this phone a few weeks ago. They review the Qtek version of it and this website also goes into a lot of detail in regards to performance. They gave it a very good review overall and even benchmarks a couple of results against the previous version of this phone "Typhoon" (5600). Keep in mind this was a pre-release review and usually there are tweaks which should appear in the final release and make it even better (if that is possible).

I promise no more posts on this subject.

i would wait instead of getting the 5600 personally.

Get the SMT-5600. Usually we get leaked info here months before the release of a new phone, but we haven't heard a peep from either cingular or t-mobile about the Tornado, which leads me to believe we won't be seeing either for a long time (more than 3 months).

Don't wait, since it really does take a lot of time to get these new phones, and its not like they add a TON of functionality - its just small incremental upgrades. I'm led to believe that Wifi won't be that fast either - you'll see a difference if you browse graphics-heavy sites, which incidentally gobble up memory and make your phone crash.

Posted by: beatniks3

no edge on the 5600 just seems strange to me, i know windows smartphones don't have it but still. if you use data at all i think this would be an issue.

I have to disagree. The new version of the 5600 is only a few weeks away. Just wait, it is right around the corner. Windows Mobile 5 which comes on the new HTC model makes it a much better device. It would be insane to buy a 5600 this close to the launch of the new models.

Posted by: MYhofoUSERNAME

i appreciate the replies. i think i'll give it a month or so and if nothing seems to be happening with the SP5m then i'll probably go ahead and pick up the 5600 on new contract and just wait and see what happens with the new phones coming out. thanks again for all the posts everyone.

edit - well i didnt see that last reply, i'll definitely keep an eye out for the new version...

Cingular will be getting the HTC Faraday, a varient of the Tornado class. Its is NOT the C600 that will be comming out to Orange UK in a few weeks! Do not confuse the two! If you want to know what the Faraday looks like google Qtek 8310 (this is the business version) and the Qtek 8300 (this is the music version). It is unclear if Cingular and or T-Mobile will get the music and or business versions of the Faraday. In either case the Cingular Faraday will have Wi-Fi, not sure about the T-Mobile Faraday, if they are getting the Faraday and not the Riemma. In either case you can expect the Faraday on Cingular late October.

Posted by: gfunkdave

Which will probably be the clincher for me to stick with Orange Splat Wireless instead of defecting to T-mobile. I guess that the $45.99 1000 minutes plan T-mobile offers would be about $65 after taxes and fees. I pay $75 now, so it just doesn't matter that much.

Now let's hope that I can get the Faraday and stick with my Blue plan.

omega, thanks for the info, any idea when they may be getting the 8300?

edit- i must be real bad at jsut reading parts of posts...late october it is....

Posted by: Omega2008

Glad I could clear that up...on a side note I wouldn't completely rule out the c600 just because Cingular can never get there crap straight in the first place but as of now the Faraday is what Cingular will be getting.

Posted by: MYhofoUSERNAME

any idea of price?

The "new version" is the Faraday, which as I said we don't know when it'll be released. Its not even available from i-mate, so you can imagine the long, foot-dragging process Cingular will go through before they release it to the public. Need I remind you how many months went by from Sony Ericsson announcing the S710a to Cingular releasing it?

EDIT: Or even take the SMT-5600 - AT&T had it ages ago, and it took more than six months for Cingular to carry it. And when they did, it cost more and had worse firmware. Go Cingular!

I just saw on G4TV a segment where they had samples of the phones T-Mobile will be releasing next week. One of them was called the SDA which is the upgrade of the 5600. Of the three phones shown it was very impressive with streaming video via wifi. They said it was a T-Mobile exclusive. I am not sure what that my mean by that. In other words as with the 5600, HTC is suppose to be making these for multiple brands. When they said exclusive to T-Mobile, does this mean that only T-Mobile will only have this without any other brands for the time being. I hope not, I know that Cingular is releasing the HP hw6515 on Tuesday, and having some type of smartphone would be a natural to go with the converged pda from HP. I hope this does not mean that we have to wait for Cingulars version of the upgraded 5600 for a few months. It is also a very good looking phone, much better looking than I thought it would be. I hope we see HTC smartphone on also on Cingular under a different brand!

If T-Mobile is going to be the only one with this smartphone for the next few months, do we know if it is unlockable now? Usually you have to wait till someone has software or there is a service available to unlock a new phone.

any updates? i heard early-mid october originally.... it's mid-october and not a word of it, much less a release date. any word when cingular will get this? my v551 is getting worse by the minute

Posted by: Omega2008

It should be out on Cingular late October or the begianing of November.

I think the followup to the 5600 will be called the C6000, or something similar.

Posted by: ncvaco

^^ Correction looks like it will be called the 2125. See the thread above.

Posted by: Rcadden

I would wait till Christmas before getting ANY smartphone from Cingular, personally. The new HP one is out, and there are several new phones coming in the next 30 days or so. There's nothing worse than paying that much for a phone, only for it to be outdated tomorrow.

Posted by: MYhofoUSERNAME

thanks guys i've been followin all gps' threads and all the other ones too.
