New SVG-T converter available from Sharp (Japanese)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Sharp have created and posted an SVG-T file converter on their Japanese keitai website. The link is here:

http://k-tai.sharp.co.jp/download/t.../DocUtility.zip

The program is able to convert MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint and PDF files into SVG-T files for viewing on all of Sharp's 3G phones. It does this by installing a printer in your computer. Using Word, Excel, Powerpoint or Adobe Reader, you print out the file you want to convert, and it will produce separate files for each page of the type of document you are printing.

Each file must be 100KB or smaller for the 802, 902, 703 and 903 to be able to view them.

The program installs in Japanese, but as it's only a printer driver, most people should have no trouble using it.

Good news, thanks for the info.
I installed the driver on my laptop and printed a simple one page excel sheet (30kb). But I cant find the file. Any idea what folder it prints to?

Posted by: burton159

sorry, found them on the desktop!
got a toshiba qosmio g20 laptop recently so i just right clicked on the files and sent them over to the phone (903sh) using bluetooth, and email worked as well. the viewer worked fine.
its obviously not as good as having the real document viewer option where you can view actual ms files, but better than not seeing them at all.

btw, something about the phone that wasnt marketed here in Japan is that it actually has the website viewing software so you can see most normal websites in one screen width and just have to scroll down to see the rest of the site. Ive even been able to log into websites with it and use hotmail. its brilliant, and i cant believe they didnt market it. with the older phones (eg 801SH) you could only view a webpage in qvga so you had to scroll across and down and usually missed most of the objects etc.

having a document viewer now is another good plus, thanks for the info.

good to know about the viewer. thanks

Posted by: totaltoanage

Posted by: Timsta

it deosn't like you toan!

Posted by: AL9999

Exactly as I've written in my first post... I don't know why you'd be getting an error for it. Should just be print, and the files stream onto your desktop.

yep, its a magic laptop. the black 903 looks like a mini version of it, great combo. it was on the tv news here yesterday being shown off by toshiba at the CETEAC(?) exhibition. i checked a lot of pc mag reviews before buying it and some of them said that up to now it was the best they could remember reviewing.

totaltoanage,

no specific idea about the error, but I did have to reload the driver about 3 times before you could actually see it installiing the files into the folder. then it worked for me.

Posted by: Timsta

Should doesn`t mean that WILL do this, this soft is not working, I`ve got the same error as the rest of the people

Posted by: AL9999

Everyone's gotten this error it seems, so it must need default JP language support to work, because that's how I run my Windows and I had no problem...

Posted by: Noemi

I got the error on japanese version of WinXP..

Posted by: AL9999

Right.....

I give up

Posted by: beyond

i got the same error as well....
weird

Posted by: Maddy77

I got me the same thing. Too bad, I was looking forward to using it.
Running Win Xp Pro SP2, US version with JP lang support.

Posted by: UncleAllEvil

I`m using polish win XP Pro with SP 1a (I don`t like changes in SP 2) but I have installed full asian language support (jap, kor & all other) coz I`m often visiting chinese and japanese websites and don`t like to see boxes instead of characters
So, I don`t think there is problem with language coz my win XP is showing japanese characters properly, everythings looks OK, no boxes
See photo below:

AL9999:
Can you check one thing:
go to the C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\
choose one file to print via SVG-T and then watch what`s happening in this folder.
When I`m trying to print via SVG`T it says there is error with 0000x.spl file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS\ folder but this file IS showing in C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\ folder!
Also a file named 0000x.SHD is showing in spool folder, but NOTHING in PRINTERS folder.
When I close window with error msg these two files are vanishing...

Finally I`ve made an experiment:
When I got another error I copied files (example, their numbers are going higher with every printing) 00007.spl and 00007.SHD to desktop, then closed window with error msg and copied this files to:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS\ folder, then I`ve changed their names to 00008.spl and 00008.SHD (because this was the number of next printing job), started printing of the same file and gues what?
File 001.svgz showed on my desktop, no error msg!!! It worked
I`ve also checked this file in the phone, everything is OK.
One more thing: files 00008.spl and 00008.SHD vanished from PRINTERS folder...

Any ideas how to fix this???

Posted by: AL9999

So the print utility seems to be forgetting to include the PRINTERS directory on top of the rest of the path when trying to open the files. I'll experiment around with it and see what I find

Posted by: AL9999

Ok in my case it did the same thing as yours UncleAllEvil - the files showed up in the spool directory and didn't have anything to do with the PRINTERS folder. However, the process went through and converted the files without a hitch.

So it looks like the program is incorrectly looking for the files in the PRINTERS folder for you guys, while creating them in the spool one, whereas in my case it's looking for them and finding them in the right place.

I don't know why this is the case, but it's very odd. I've definitely got the same file that Sharp offers now, they haven't updated versions or anything.

I really have no idea why it's like this. Very weird

Posted by: UncleAllEvil

I`ve found the way to fix this

Start regedit and search for the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers
you will find there key DefaultSpoolDirectory with value:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\PRINTERS
simply change this to:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool
and you can start printing your SVG-T files

Posted by: AL9999

Nice find. The path in that key on my system is set with PRINTERS at the end, and it still works, but if it works for you by doing that then that's great.

I'll post your post in the other two forums so everyone's gets the news...

pretty neat app; i will probably never use it, but pretty neat nonetheless

Yeah, SVG-T converter is finally working OK on my system, no problems
Post this wherever you want

Only bad thing about SVG-T is that it`s not converting bigger pictures inside documents (at last not when I`m printing something from Adobe Reader) and pictures quality after conversion is pretty bad. Still it`s very good tool for ebooks

Posted by: jlind

Were you able to get the files to show up under tools --> E-Book? So far I can only view the files when I go to Data Folder --> Other Documents.

I tried creating a new folder under E-Book then using my PC to copy all the the pages of a book that I converted using the method described in this thread to that folder but no files show up in E-Book.

Posted by: AL9999

They're only designed to be viewed under Other Documents. The E-Book feature on the 903 is compatible with the Japanese XMDF spec only.

It works, but converted pages move with joystick very veeeeery slow.
How can it be fixed?

Are you sure about this? On my 902 page is not moving under D-Pad at all. It`s only moving when I press 2,4,8,6 and it`s fast.

Posted by: MODist

Yea, that's true.
Thanx.

& is it possible to crop the page with some prog. so the picture in the cell could be 240x320?

Posted by: UncleAllEvil

What`s the point in this? Information want be readable anymore. You can zoom in/out pages in the phone directly.
