I washed my 6682

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Gunner1

Yeah, I'm an idiot. Last night I accidentally threw a pair of pants in the wash that had my brand new 6682 in them.

The phone is completely waterlogged, I took the battery and SIM out but there is water behind the screen. I have no idea if the phone will work after it dries out but I am skeptical.

I use the phone for work and really can't be without it for a week or two while trying to salvage/repair it.

Anyone have any ideas if there is any option for replacement with Cingular when something like this happens, or am I relegated to paying full price for a new handset? I did not have any insurance (and I've never done anything this stupid before).

Thanks.

PS, can someone give me the phone # for NBO?

aie! thanks for reminding me to order insurance for my 6682.

i feel for you, man. *pours one out for his 6682 homie*

Sorry my friend. You're gonna have to fork over the $$$$ for a new one. Get insurance after you get the new phone.

Good luck man.

Posted by: CowboyNYC

At least you didn't drop it in the toilet for a swim with the turds. Even if you could get it to work again the smell of *** would never go away.

Sad to hear that such a young, bright Nokia was taken out before its time. I'd check ebay to get yourself a replacement Nokia of some kind. There are new and used 6620's and 3600's out there with the great Symbian OS.

As for the insurance.... dont think its worth it... lockline would probably only screw you and make the loss worse. A quick search on the hofo forum will give you a good idea of locklines games....

Now you know that washing a Cell Phone is not the best way to clean it!!!!!

Posted by: wierdo

With careful disassembly and drying, it's possible the phone could be made to work again, but it's unlikely. I've seen phones survive for quite some time under water...

Posted by: bobolito

Was the phone off before it went in the washer?
I bet that now that phone will always be smelling like Tide and Downy.

Take it apart as much as you can, use a hair drier and blow all the components (don't put it in the hottest setting or you'll melt the plastic!). Make sure it dries completely. Put it back together and see if it works.

Posted by: boston_errol

I also bet there are some silly people on hofo willing to buy your dead or almost dead 6682. Put it in the B/S/T phone and see how much you can get for it.

That, or put it on ebay. For some reason part of me thinks you can recover $50-$100 for it.

I feel your pain. I washed a 6340i a couple of years back in the TDMA/early GAIT days, and that's the only thing I've seen destroy a Nokia. I left it in that big pocket on the side of a pair of cargo pants, so didn't feel it in there when putting them in the dirty clothes pile. I replaced it and still have the replacement.

May your 6682 rest in peace . . .

ouch..i feel your pain..i remember last year when i was doing laundry and ended up washing my paycheck..ofcourse i the boss gave me a new one..but after that ive learned to always shake, and inspect my clothes before throwing them in.. i guess we all learn to do this somehow..lesson learned..i hope everything turns out ok..but even if you did have insurance on it..lockline would be a pain..try calling XBM after it dries up...tell them your phone wouldnt power on..make sure everything is dried up first...it may work..if not..be prepared to shell out cash for a new phone.

I called Business Customer Care and they were cool enough to offer to let me order a replacement phone for the contract renewal price. The problem is that they say that there are currently 4,000 6682 handsets on backorder. So I will have to find another set in the meantime (with that many on backorder I will be lucky to get it before Xmas).

I did disassemble the phone, clean it, dry it and put it back together, but it's dead as a hammer. As someone said, maybe someone will want to buy it for a project phone for $50-$100 bucks. If anyone is interested please PM me.

The phone is completely waterlogged, QUOTE]

I just wanted to add my "that sucks" comment to the list!

Interesting story 2 years ago I dropped a perfectly working, brand new Blackberry 7280 while I was walking into a puddle in the road (damm NYC potholes)...anyway, the thing start flaking out on me big time. What amazed me is that after I let it dry, the thing still booted up although some of the keys didn't quite work...the backlight would flash on and off, etc.

Anyway, long story short, I ended up selling it to a guy for $280, which was a good deal for an unlocked 7280 back then....he then spent $50 and fixed it right up. Works almost like new.

Then again, he did all kinds of things including using distilled water, sticking it in an oven, etc.

I have actually done the same thing in a pair of my workout pants, beleieve it or not I took the battery out very quickly (apparently that's key) and left it over night next to a dehumidifier.......much to my surprise it worked! I was able to use it the next morning. The phone never completley recovered but it gave me more than enough time to get all my information, and get a new phone.
Good luck

I know a guy that dropped his phone in a puddle at a gas station. After they laughed at him the mechanic grabbed his phone and blew it out with shop air and told him to put it on top of his defroster and Ill be dammed but it worked.

So, how does it look now??

Despite sellers explicitly stating the obvious, I've seen idiots purchase 6682 dummy phones for $110 on eBay. I'm sure you can sell a water logged phone for at least the same amount!

You gotta be kidding me

Posted by: CowboyNYC

What does one do with a dummy phone esp. after spending that much? Fill it with the guts of a crap LG or Kyocera to get a cool looking CDMA phone?

try this place

If you can't find anything on the forum, I suggest you try browsing your local Craigslist. In your case, it's here. If you're feeling really lazy, here's a search I did for "Nokia" items under 100 bucks.

oh, I dont doubt that one bit. but at the same time, those are the same idiots who end up giving the seller bad ebay feedback for selling them a broken phone.

now, pay no mind that the auction's description more than likely said that the phone was broken, it still doesnt matter. some people are just retarded and they arent able to completely read through and understand on an item's description.

all they pay attention to are two things: 1) the picture in the auction's description and 2) how much their bid is. the rest is minimal.....

Quote:

again, you could probably sell the dead phone on ebay. but like I said earlier, be prepared for the buyer to give you negative feedback once he/she realizes that they recieved a dead phone.

I have an idea. OP, did you buy the phone with a credit card? My credit card from American Express has a 90 day program called Purchase Protection Plan where it will protect you from theft or damage. Same with my Citi card. If bought on a credit card with this feature, I would try and get the money from them first.

Sadly I bought the phone with a Visa Check Card that offers no such buyer protection that I am aware of.

Good idea though, in the future I will be putting major purchases on cards with protection.

Posted by: 0s and 1s

Either way, check with the bank and see if they offer any protection on their debit cards.

Also, I have a SE t237 (Cingular locked) that i'm not using that I can sell for $33 shipped. I've seen 'em sell for $45+ on eBay. That or we can trade that for your broken 6682.

Posted by: mobilemetal

Do not use a hair dryer! Or compressed air! If you are able to take it apart, spray it down thoroughly with WD-40 (WD stands for water displacement), and then let it dry in a sunny spot. Re-assemble, and you might be surprised. This method has worked on sensitive electronic components for me in the past. If you have already dried it out with a hair dryer it may be a lost cause.

Posted by: Gunner1

Well, I've found locally an LG 4015 that I will be picking up really cheap. They are crap phones but it will make a decent enough backup until my new Nokia 6682 shows up (sometime next year maybe).

Posted by: Gunner1

OK, LG girl was a total flake. Her phone was far from "new condition" and it was also sim locked with AT&T and was obviously old and would not work on Cingular.

I just ended up going to a Cingular B&M and buying a cheap Sammy for $119 with no contract.

I figure if the replacement 6682 comes in before 30 days are up I can always return the Samsung phone.

Posted by: 0s and 1s

Cheap? I had one for $33 shipped! Now THAT'S cheap. Oh well...

Sorry to hear about LG...

Ahh, but the really important thing was that I have something working today. And also, do you take returns?

Posted by: pike

My girlfriend washed AND dryed a Nokia 8300. It still works today. We got this phone when AT&T upgraded Cleveland to GSM (we were among the first to migrate).

Nokia phones amaze me sometimes. I guess some of them are just built better than others. Sorry to hear about yours

Another little update to the story. Today I called NBO to see what the status of my backordered 6682 was, and it turned out that it was on the Fedex truck waiting to be delivered.

I now have a new working 6682 and and will be returning the Samsung X207 that I had bought as a temporary/backup phone from the local Cingular shop.

Thanks all for the advice/suggestions. I am also still willing to part with the dead 6682 and all associated materials for the right price, feel free to PM me.

This is why insurance is NOT stupid at all. Don't ever leave home without it.

Everyone seems to think that Lockline is more trouble than it's worth.

Posted by: boston_errol

you should seriously advertise for the dead 6682 hardcore... B/S/T here or ebay. i'm SURE you will recover some funds.

Besides, is Lockline insuring the Nokia 6682 anyway?

Just in case, I'd get a backup phone that you like. There are also other ways to insure your phone. Homeowner's or renter's insurance and there are also third-party cell phone insurers that ask $35 up front and have $25 deductables, or so I discovered a couple days ago while hanging out in my favorite wireless agent store.

Glad you were able to get a replacement so quickly. I can only imagine the horror of discovering you washed your brand new gadget. From what I can tell, it's a great phone and replacing it was probably worth it.

I'd like to hope so, seeing as how it's just the replacement for the 6620, which was insurable if i'm not mistaken?

I just found out today that the 6682 cannot be insured, because it's classed as a PDA.

Yes it is insurable, I will have my 6682 from lockline on monday.

Guess I was lied to then. Anyways a lot of people claim lockline just gives you the run around. I definitely will be treating this new phone with kid gloves though.

Actually the lockline rep I spoke to, was very nice.

I searched HoFo on this and some of the reps do say it’s not covered. Im just suggesting you double check on what nice guy said.
