Trying to connect i830 to laptop via Serial Cable

Hi,
I am trying to connect my i830 to my computer via a Serial cable, but the phone just will not recognize the cable, or the computer won't recognize the phone, i am not sure where the problem is.
The weird thing is, i was able to use it once a long time ago, and it worked fine - i uploaded wallpapers, this was a couple months ago.
Any suggstions? .. i beleive when the cable connects, you'l see a 'device attached' on the phone.
