Im asking basically about phone features first, those that havehad them, ie: rf, loudspeaker, speakervolume for ringtones, mp3 playback thru headset and eirpiece volume, i know the others are smart phones but these are my choices and bt capabilities.

I can only speak to the S710a, but here's some answers for you on that:
Ringtones are loud. MP3 ringtones are just as loud as long as the file is loud. I make my ringtones using Adobe Audition 1.5 and make sure the levels are set to just below clipping. If you've ripped them from cd's, then you're levels are likely good.
RF - This is better than my 6230 was, better than the S66, and way better than the V551 in my area. I rarely drop below 3 bars in my house, where with the V551 I'd drop to nothing at times, 1 with the 6230, and 2 with the S66.
Earpiece volume - No problems at all. I can hear everyone clearly.
Speakerphone - I was jsut thinking today that I've had this phone for almost a week and haven't used the speakerphone yet. I can tell you that the mp3's as ringtones sound very clear, much better than the 6230 did.

I thought about picking up an smt5600 in January (assuming there's nothing new by then), but then got to thinking - what the heck do I need a smartphone for? I'm not going to sync with Outlook, I do very little data on my phones...the S710a is probably even overkill for me.

Bottom line: I think you're comparing apples to oranges here. Answer one question: do you NEED a smartphone? If the answer is no, then get the S710a. You'll be quite pleased with it I'll bet.

The rf and battery life on the MPx220 is better than the S710a.

That alone is reason not to get an S710a.

I am suprised at the battery life of my mpx 220.... but I just cant get past the poor speaker volume... earpiece and loudspeaker....

Yeah, the speakerphone blows. What ROM are you running? 1.43 seems to have fixed the low earpiece vloume issue.

I dunno about the RF, as I get the best reception of any phone I've ever had with the S710a...well, any GSM phone anyway. Battery life isn't all that bad either, as I go three days before having to charge. Seriously...I don't understand the battery life complaints. You all sleep at some point every day, right? If you're battery is low, charge the phone while you're sleeping! Problem solved!

Ok my friend had sony s710 we both mailmen sometimes we can talk for 3 hrs straight while on route, or shall i say we can be on phone for 3 hrs not always talking but being connected and he always kills battery before we finish our day, while i can still go on mpx 220, also there is a area we do when delivering, a building that is shacky with reception but when using my mpx220 he called and got signal no problem, with s710 he was searching, im enquiring because i really like the s710 but rf and battery life are most important.

While SE has gotten much better at producing mobiles with very good reception, the S710a is not one of them. I work in a few labs with a lot of heavy equipment, plus, there's metal plumbing surrounding them. Perfect place to test fringe area rf performance. What can I say, my S710a performed very poorly. In areas where my V635 could place and hold calls, the S710a couldn't even acquire a signal.

I ditched the phone within a week.

The 5600 is an awesome phone. The rf, movie player and mp3 are great. Check out the reviews on cnet.com and phonescoop.com!

I've really got to agree with the above post... The SMT5600 is a great phone. The RF is great, I watch movies, listen to mp3's through the BT headset (you have to d/l bluetunes) It generally lasts me 2 days without recharging it, and that it with me watching a full length movie (on my lunch breaks) and using it throughout the day (I use about 1500 minutes a month).

I own the s710a, (I'm selling a new one I got, not my everyday one.. just FYI) it is a good phone. Lots of features, but it's rf isn't that great, and the small memory card drives me crazy. 128mb isn't enough to do anything!

The mpx220 has had waaaay too many problems for me to even want to try it out. Besides, although it is a pricy handset, it feels and looks cheap. (opinion only... no need to try and convince me otherwise...)

The new ROM seems to be very stable. It's been running two weeks with no lock-ups. RF is great, and battery life exceeds three days.

I will agree that the overall feel of the 220 is a bit on the cheap side. When closed, the flip will move side to side, and I'm not a big fan of the plastic they used on the phone. (With Moto using aluminum on the V series, you'd think they'd implement it on the 220)

Overall it's still a decent phone, much better than the S710a, IMO.

I think it all comes down to personal preferences, if you like candybar style handsets, go with the 5600. Flips, go with the 220.

one of the reasons i returned my s710a was it's poor rf in "fringe" service areas. my 6620 dominates in rf.

See, I may shoot myself later for saying this, but I guess the phones I've owned have been good enough for the "fringe" areas I've gone to. Closest to a fringe area was Blacksburg, Virginia (right outside of Virginia Tech), but never lost my signal anywhere along US81. Did roam onto other carriers at points, but still never had a problem.

Living less that 10 miles (as the crow flies) from NYC has its advantages, but I guess this proves that RF is subjective...yet again. If a phone holds signal well for you in the area you're in, RF is good. Period. If you never travel into 'fringe areas', then is RF really THAT big of a deal?

Battery life, okay I can understand the 'mailman example' above. Never known anyone who would be on the phone THAT much during the day, but I see where you're coming from now.
