Nokia 6230b is QUADBAND! - according to Cingular

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of alse information that seems to come from phone calls with CSR.

I called yesterday because I am leaving in two weeks for a vacation in India for 2 1/2 weeks and I'm taking a phone. I obviously know the 6230b is 850/1800/1900mhz bands but I called to make sure the required International Roaming / International Dialing features were on my account.

My conversation:
Me: "Hi, I wanted to make sure the international roaming feature was on my account"
CSR: <Looks up my account> "Yes you have the international roaming and dialing features already"
Me: "Great, thanks..." <ready to hang up>
CSR: "Wait, what phone do you have?"
Me: "A Nokia 6230b"
CSR: <Looks it up in his 'system'> "Oh you should be good to go, it's a quad-band phone so it supports all the bands"
Me: "I don't think so. I thought it was 850/1800/1900 only?"
CSR: "No that's not true, according to my system, it's a quad-band phone"
Me: "Ok, thanks bye"

I feel bad for those people who don't know any better and trust Cingular CSR. If I trusted this buffoon, I would have taken my 6230b to India to only realize it's really tri-band and doesn't work for sh**.

Beware...don't take what you hear from them at face-value!

This reminds me of the Cingular CSR (at a kiosk in the mall, of course) who told me before I signed up that the e317 had a speakerphone. Heh. I wasn't ready to buy, so I went home, looked it up and discovered it didn't, just as I had suspected. Ah, well, it was pretty new at the time...besides, that was the only CSR who wasn't up on his info that I dealt with out of about a dozen in the month leading up to my port. It did crack me up.
I'm gonna order me one of them quad band 6230s right now. Bet I can get it direct from Nokia. Woot.

Watch out for plasma burns!

In billing its shows most triband phones from Nokia incorrectly as Quad Band for some reason. Someone just reading the screen who isnt familiar with the handset would think it would be Quadband. Its an easy error to make. I was confused when I first saw it too.

Nokia 6230b #IMEI# GSM W-4 850/900/1800/1900

Thats what it shows up as.

A quad-band 6230b? Well, I gues if you ever travel to Puerto Rico, you will be able to use it on Cingular's 900 Mhz network. Well... that's what I was told once by a dumb CS rep.

Posted by: mobilehavoc

How funny would it be if in reality 6230bs were in fact quadband but Cingular only advertised them as tri-band!

Wish there was a way to test...

You mean 1900. 900 is only for Overseas markets.

No, I meant 900, because I was quoting a clueless rep who was capable of telling me such a thing.

It's not funny. This is exactly what happened.

Friggin CSR tried telling me that when I switched from Orange to Blue. He tried selling me on a V551, and I HATE Moto phones. I'd just as soon spend a weekend at Neverland Ranch than use one. Dude tried telling me that because it's Quad Band, you get the best reception. "Oh really? Tell me who uses 900 in the US, cause Cingular sure as hell don't"

He shut up and gave me the 6230 after that. God, I miss that phone.

Maybe, but not Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, where the FCC regulates communication so they can only use the same bands as the US mainland.
