LGVX9800 Ringtones - This one worked for me

This guide right here, for the 8100, direct via bluetooth.

One thing I've noticed about BitPim though. In editing filesystem view, sending files, and making modifications, you have to keep pressing buttons so the bluetooth stays active. Not sure why. If I don't though, things don't work right.

Needed to post this. Cause that one works perfectly, where as some of the other ones just caused me to spend 2 hours troubleshooting and fixing stuff.

And if your sound stops working, go to Settings-->Sounds-->Keypad Volume

and turn it up and then back down.

I don't know why that corrects it, or what triggers the error.

Posted by: U_Santana

So you just used the 8100 setting to transferr tones to the 9800?

Posted by: nikko11

That is correct, the folders are all located in the same place on the filesystem, and when you delete the ringtones.dat and the myringtonesize.dat after uploading ringtones to
brew/16452/lk/mr directory, you have to go to the Setting-->Sounds-->Keypad Volume and it is all set.

Posted by: JustZman

You don't need to delete any files after you transfer them to the phone dir. Just restart the phone and they show up

Posted by: nikko11

I do have to delete those files, or the phone freezes when I access My Ringtones.

What version of BitPim are you using? I have 0.7.25 Before I invest more time trying to get it to work, just thought I'd check

My last phone was a 6000, and I never have done any ringtone dl-ing so I hope you are open to a newbie's questions.

Posted by: jayfreak

what bluetooth is the best to do this ...

Posted by: nikko11

I am using 7.37 version of Bitpim.

I bought a little "Iogear" branded Bluetooth dongle for like $25.

But I think the USB data cable (same cable as for the VX6100/7000/8000/8100)
is much better simply because the phone defaults to that as it's PC connection and is easier to keep active, not to mention about 10 times faster at uploading information...

And cheaper. I bought one from ebay and it came with a car charger for free. So Car Charger and Data Cable were like $10.18 including shipping. Itrimming was the name of the company selling it.

Posted by: gkmt50

I must be missing something... how do I just use the USB cable to get the data on the phone... I thought I needed BitPim to put the mp3 and ringtones where I need them? Ok, I am going to have to just try renaming the mp3 extension like someone mentioned and see if the phone sees them on the SD card.

Thanks for replying!

Posted by: nikko11

Uh, nobody said anything about renaming the mp3 extension.....

Yeah, you use Bitpim and upload the ringtones. Wallpapers you can move to the phone from the card in phone.

Please read the thread and the linked thread, it's quite clear.

Posted by: gkmt50

I've read the thread you linked. My problem right now is that although I got QuickLink Mobile to see the phone on ComPort4, BitPim does not. I'm kind of stuck, as I don't see any troubleshooting for "what to do when BitPim does not see your phone."

I was referring to many other numerous threads I have read about ringtones and some have said in order for their phone to see it they had to rename the file extension.

I have never used BitPim, or a USB cable to access my phone. I've always been content to use the pre-installed ringtones but the ones on this LG are particularly lame. Of course, Verizon wants me to Get It Now! The amount of time and money I am putting into trying to load a few ringtones is kind of silly at this point... I could have downloaded 6 GIN tones and probably been happy with them For me it's the principle of the thing, I have this cool phone with a data card, I ought to be able to load things on the phone without a hassle.

Posted by: nikko11

Gotcha. Yeah, this is my first time messing with ringtones as well, but I would consider myself somewhat highly technically proficient. I've gotten a ton of help from the forums here, and figured out a lot of stuff I never would have otherwise.

You can't transfer ringtones from the card for two reasons. The first is that verizon makes money from it's Get It Now program, and second is that there are a lot of copyright infrigment issues that can come up.

Bitpim doesn't need to be able to "recognize" your phone.

You plug it in, choose VX-8100 in the settings, and Turn on the filesystem view. (one of the menu options)

Then follow the directions listed in the original thread I linked to.

im lost nikko11 can u help me out or us out

Posted by: nikko11

Not if you don't tell me how you are lost.

Here's the directions, once you get to the point where your phone is attached in BitPim, and you turned on "View Filesystem" under the View drop-down.

upload ringtones to the /brew
/16542
/lk
/mr
directory in the filesystem.

Remember, you MUST turn on the View Filesystem.

The go to the /dload/ directory and delete the "my_ringtone.dat" and the "myringtonsize.dat".

Then turn the phone off.
wait till it's off.
Then turn the phone on.

Go to the menu, right twice, to SETTINGS AND TOOLS. then to 3. Sounds.
Then go to 4. Keypad Volume. press ok, it'll say Keypad Volume Set.

clear out, and go to "Get Tunes and Tones", then My Ringtones. Your new ringtones should be there in green at the top, reverse alphabetical.

Press the OK button to play them and hear them.

im lost on this part On your PC, go to "My Bluetooth Places" (you can type that in windows explorer and you will go there)[/B]
how ? and i cant get my phone connected to BitPim,

please help

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey, I've been a lurker for a long time, figured it's time for me to post. The 8100 is pretty new, and there are a few HowTos, but nothing covering everything, so I'll see what I can cover.

First off, you'll need to get your phone connected to your computer... I use Bluetooth, but you can also use a data cable. Here are instructions for Bluetooth
1. Click Menu->Settings and Tools->9. PC Connection
2. Select 3. Bluetooth to use Bluetooth
3. If it asks you if you want to turn bluetooth on, select Yes.
4. Go to Menu -> Settings and Tools -> 0. Bluetooth
5. Select 3. My Visibility
6. Select "Show to All"
7. On your PC, go to "My Bluetooth Places" (you can type that in windows explorer and you will go there)
8. Click "View Devices in Range" in the left hand side
9. Double click on your phone
10. Double Click on "Bluetooth Serial Port".
11. It will tell you what Com Port it is assigning to the phone, this is important, remember it (it's Com8 on my computer

Posted by: gkmt50

When I open up control panel I don't have "My Bluetooth places" and when I type it into windows explorer, it tries to use MSN search to find it on the internet.

Posted by: gkmt50

Hmm, is there a CD with the Jabra headset I need to re-locate that has the software on it so I have "My Bluetooth places?"

Do I have to resize the MP3s like I had to on my VX6000? Or can I just pick and choose what I want and upload it?

Posted by: LeRoy3

I am certain the reiteration of how to's and what not are at times a head ache for haveing said it so many times in so many ways. Once i get the ring tone download and play routine understood i too will help diseminate for those who don't understand.
So thanks for your patience and your help.

Well, there is only 3MB of memory set aside for ringtones, anything above that will not be recognized by the phone, so yes, you will want to use a program like Audacity to reduce them to 30sec or so. If it's a short clip, it will repeat itself once it runs through.

Thanks LeRoy, yeah, it gets to be a little frustrating answering the same questions repeatedly, but yeah, the more who understand it, the more who can help explain.

Anyhow, let me know if there is something specific you need clarification on, but the information is all out here, basically it's the same as the 8100.
