(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: whtrbt7

Hello HoFo members,
I'm creating an official MS Activesync 4.x FAQ thread for those of you that have issues with Activesync 4.x. If you have questions or answers, please post here. Currently there are 2 version of Activesync available. When you post a question, please post the device you are using as well as the Activesync version. Let's have a good resource for Activesync.

Activesync 4.0
Activesync 4.1

It would appear that I am unable to receive messages with outlook? When I try to receive, get "The Operation Failed" Error Message?

Is there an error code along with the message?

Posted by: greatgca

No error code. Just a popup window stating that the operation failed.

My issue which I am still analysing with the help of Hofo memebers seems to be around USB cable sync with my K-Jam. I can sync via IR without any issues. When i try to sync via USB both the computer and K-Jam recognize they have been connected (appropriate drivers install) but time out when trying to connect. I have tried two different USB cables and two different USB ports. I have not tried another computer yet.

My current guess is that it is an issue with my corporate SP2 firewall config since it seems that AS 4.0 creates its own network adapter dynamically upon sync initiation for a USB sync. I do not think it is a hardware issue on my K-Jam.

I am using Activesync 4.0 direct from the CD. I have not yet test the 4.1 beta as I want to eliminate my firewall as a potential cause first.

I'll update this as I find out more tonight from troubleshooting.

me too wasn't able to sync via USB, i'm using v4.1, XP home SP1

You have to dissable firewall when connecting 5.0 devices to your computer via USB.

I read this online when the JJ first came out

This can't be true. I can successfully USB sync my K-Jam to my work laptop which is running SP2 and firewall in place.

Posted by: nickp

I am sync'ing locally to a Win2K machine, using AS 4.1 to my K-Jam. I had upgraded from 3.x and had other partnerships prior to creating the one for my K-Jam. I was able to sync initially (although very slow) without a hitch. Then once I soft reset my K-Jam and went to sync, it could not find the original partnership, even though all of my Outlook data was on my device.

Bottom line, I had to delete all of my previous partnerships, cold boot my KJ and re-establish a partnership. Has worked fine ever since.

I understand that AS 4.1 is a beta release. Anyone know when it will be a production release ??

Thanks .....

My JJ works perfectly with zonealarm. No problems here

Where's the best place to get the most up to date copy of Activesync 4.1?

Here is the link. Works well so far with the one exception I noted above.

Is there an official link to activesync 4.1??

How do we know if its the latest build?

I am having trouble syncing my tasks, and notes. I sync with an exchange server for my email, calender and contacts. When I attach via usb to my computer it does not sync the tasks or notes. Any ideas..?

Posted by: Xenious

I've got a new sync bug I just found. It appears to sync fine with my exchange server via wireless/GPRS, however it never actually downloads any messages. I have it set to grab all of them at any size. I know there is mail in my inbox it just never appears on the device.

Unless I can get this working it will be the sad deal breaker.

Update!!

For some reason it is skipping over my inbox. When I check on activesync the list of folders to sync the only option i have is Sent Items (which syncs perfectly). No idea why this is the case. Going to try making a new partnership.

Posted by: Xenious

Can someone else who is syncing to Exchange via the internet tell me what folders show up in the Activesync settings on the PC?

Mine looks like this

Inbox
|
|< > Sent Items
--

I'm wondering if anyone has a specific checkbox for the inbox as mine is skipping over the sync of the inbox folder. The only box I can check is Sent Items.

I've been having the same problem, but I thought it was ROM 1.49 problem instead of an Activesync Problem because I went from AS 4.0 back down to 3.8 and could not get the inbox messages to sync.

I had reported this in the Mobile Gadget News Forum and one of the readers had indeed been able to sync the Inbox using AS 4.0 and an MPx220 running 1.49 ROM.

I reflashed back down to 1.43 and was able to sync the inbox messages using ActiveSync 4.0, so that means 4.0 works.

So now I'm not sure which is the problem: the phone's ROM or the ActiveSync Software.

Any ideas?

I'm using an iMate K-Jam and I've not tested my MPx220 since upgrading to AS 4.0. I wonder if it is something that gets messed up in the initial partnership?

Posted by: whtrbt7

@Xenious
I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that Inbox synchronization does workvia AES. The bad news is that if you revert back to syncing through AS4.0 it will screw with the mail database in your device. If you set up AES, just try to use pass-through internet connections or WAN connections. AS4.0 can corrupt/displace the mail database to make the inbox unusable.

Ok makes sense. I do have an issue with passthrough exchange sync when i sync my device (it complains). What steps should I take to fix it? Currently i have inbox sync going through exhange and the rest syncing locally.

Friggin a I fixed it!!! I connected to my pc via IR activesync. Disabled exchange sync, did a local inbox sync, then re-enabled exchange sync. It then picked up all the exchange folders and it is working!!!

Now I just need to fix USB Activesync.

Posted by: Shadowlee

whtrbt7 - is it worth downloading AS 4 if I'm still using 2003SE? Does it offer anything new for me? I have 3.8 at the moment and it's a little flaky.

Posted by: Xenious

I've been trying to come up with benefits of the new way Activesync 4.0 works and well I can't think of any. All in all it seems to be a royal pain when it creates a dynamic network interface and uses it to sync. Is the only real benefit easier for MS to code?

Posted by: kevinnugent

Hi guys

My mobile device got named Kevin_Nugent (why I don't know, and no big deal) - anyway - so in AS4.01 it's called WM_Kevin_Nugent. That is until I had to hard reset my device and delete the partnership and start again.

Now, it's called WM_Kevin_Nugen1 rather than the previous name. I deleted the previous partnership, reset, restarted the PC etc. It doesn't let you name the device anywhere?

Kevin

Posted by: Xenious

That confused me too. It seems to pick up and name itself as WM_username and when being searched for the device from other bluetooth devices it shows up as OwnerFirstName_LastName.

Posted by: ERN1824

I uninstalled Activesync 3.8 and reinstalled 4.1 and at the same time I upgraded my MPx220 ROM from 1.43 to 1.49. I attached the usb cable to the phone went through the device setup and the inbox sync works perfectly with my desktop - I do not use an Exchange Server, so I can not test that connection.

I don't know why it is now working. I can not point out anything different in the installation that I did from the previous 3 attempts to get this working. But it does work.

Posted by: enfinite

You can change the device name here:

Start\Settings\System\About\Device ID

Posted by: whtrbt7

@Shadowlee
I wouldn't switch unless you are using WM5.x. AS4.x causes more problems if you already have issues with AS3.8. I really wish that AS4.x was written better because it causes lots of security issues which should be non-existent.

@Kevin Nugent
WM5.x now names your device so it can synchronize using a network name instead of using the old nomenclature system. Supposedly, this is to start switching synchronization methods to network synchronization expected in future OS models.

@anyone having problems with e-mail synchronization
If you reset activesync or the device databases, you can reclaim e-mail synchronization. For those of you working with AES, you can just uncheck the Inbox icon in the AES setup and then recheck it to clean out the database.

Posted by: nickp

I am not using Enterprise Server. I am sync'ing locally to my laptop, using WM5 and AS4.1. Is there any way to sync the SENT items box from K-Jam to laptop Outlook ??

Posted by: whtrbt7

@nickp
Go to messaging --> menu --> tools --> manage folders. This should only be done for the Outlook E-mail account.

OK new Activesync (4.1) problem. The check box with "Install programs in the default installation folder" is checked, and greyed out, meaning I cannot change it, for it to ask me to install to the MiniSD card, and of course, always installs into the devices RAM . I actually just got my MiniSD card for my K-Jam today, and before, I had thought it was greyed out because there were no other opitons than the dafult folder, but, now with the MiniSD card, and I soft reset the device, it still shows a grey out, and i cannot change it, meaning, I cannot install anything to the miniSD card. Any thoughts? Much appreciated.

I believe it is greyed out now because you get prompted on the device where you want to install the program. See screenshots.

initiall warning

selection of where to install

Posted by: whtrbt7

Hi Jeff, haven't seen you around in a while. As Mashie mentioned, installation location now happens on the device instead of through AS4.1. The reason why this happened is due to CAB installation errors that were noticed by MS staff when they tried to install CAB files directly. This switch constitutes the move towards a more mobile system that can be run without PC interaction. If you aren't getting the installation location dialogue, you may have to hard reset or upgrade the ROM.

I am having trouble transferring any video files to the storage card on my device. Before the kjam I simply used to drag n drop which is still working fine except for video files now.
Is it WM5.0 and/or AS4.1...am I doing something wrong? Or has this been "disabled" and can only be achiecved through AS/Media Player syncing? Its just too slow a process if thats the case.
Would drag n drop to my storage card work for all if I just do it with a card reader- totally bypassing the AS process?
Thanks for any help/suggestions.

I'm having problems... this is damn f*** : ( I just bought my K-jam but I'm not able to sync at all it crashed and gives e a bluescreen. I'm now trying to install win2k and try it on there but I don't like this at all.. really not

Posted by: zoran

Ok, I was able to get rid of the blue screen issue by updating my usb drivers on my PC. Now I'm able to connect successfully, as well as perform synchronization.

@whtrbt7 -- Hi Alex -- I've certainly been "around" - Europe, Asia, Mideast, USA -- just nothing new to talk about, until this frggin K-Jam (JASJAR is just simply too big)

@Mashie -- Thanks -- that was it -- I just did not go that far with the installations, so, I did not get ot see that option for the storage card.

I don't like it -- it seems backwards in user friendiness. Actually, I am finding the whole K-Jam quirky, in relation to many things that the Jam was very (or, more) friendly with (meaning Windows Mobile 2003) -- I even miss the "new" option on the home page screen. And other little quirks.

New adopters -- gotta love it -- we change the way we got used to, every 6 months!

You know ... I just got it (I feel like Joey Tribbiani) K-Jam -- KEYBOARD Jam ... d amn !!!

Posted by: whtrbt7

@Jeffharris
Ha!!!! You are a riot. Joey Tribbiani would be proud. I could seriously see K-jam standing for that. Those sneaky Brits are always a step ahead of us yanks.

@prodigalfish
File transfers are even slower due to the storage medium being switched to ROM. Files need to get cached in ROM before going to (surprise) ROM (storage card) again. Don't like to wait? Time to resort to a card reader (unfortunately).

Ahh..the things you learn Thanks for the explaination whtrbt7. Music's fine- its the video transfer. I see now that it's converting (which is taking up all the time) before transferring. As long as this is normal I can do w/o the card reader. Just gotta load up what I need the night before (I'm late to work often enough w/o this adding to my tardiness).

I'm using ActiveSync 4.1 with the K-Jam.

Problem I have is that when I hook it up via USB, a notification pops up in the corner of my desktop saying "Computer Name already exists on network". ActiveSync then fails to do anything.

I use DHCP on my network and have connected wirelessly without any problems. The USB connection fails to work on any of my PCs on the network even if I clear the DHCP leases on the server.

Anyone got any clues?

I use to be able to connect to the internet on my jam going through activsync while connected to my laptop, now with the k-jam it tries to connect using GPRS, and by-passes the AS connection that is already in place. Any news on this?

Thanks

I have a Sony notebook, so used the ones specific for my model. Found them on Sony's website. You should be able to find updated USB drivers for your particular model if you look at the manufacturer's website. Or you can just try updating the drivers automatically - go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager, go all the way down to USB Controllers, right click, and hit update driver. Make sure you're connected to internet.

If your manufacturer doesn't have updated USB drivers, try Intel's site.

Posted by: martinctv

Thanks, I am conected to the internet. I will try to update the drivers.

Doesn't look like it. According to the release notes, AS 4.0 is compatible with Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. There is no mention of Windows 98 or 95. It may work but may be unsupported...

First problem with Activesync. The other day, I checked box in my Notes program on my K-jam to store all of my notes on the SD card and moved them all there. Upon realizing that this would result in a lost ability to sync my notes with Outlook, I changed the preference on the K-jam to store on the device and moved all of the notes back to the device. I still didn't get the option on my Activesync 4.1 screen to sync notes, so I deleted all of the notes on my K-jam, moved the notes on my Outlook to a dummy folder, resynced, created a dummy note on my pc, resynced again and still no ability to sync notes.

Anyone know what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

Anyone managed to sync their JJ over BT with a PC/laptop yet? I have found that for soe reason my laptop is not "publishing" the ActiveSync service only a BT serial connection service. Any suggestions? (PS I am using a relatively new Belkin BT dongle & Belkin s/w).

I had this same problem. Make sure the port that you are connecting to via BT is selected under the connection settings in Activesync.

Posted by: srkopec

I've been having the same problem that alot of folks are experiencing with my Wizard. When I got to Activesync via USB, I get a screen stating "connecting" and it stays at that forever.

Well, today I tried hooking up Activesync on my wife's computer, and lo and behold, it worked. So I started looking for differences. Our computers were both built with the same software except for two differences...

1. Her has Photoshop 7.x on it
2. Mine has the Cisco VPN client on it

Since the note on clubimate.com indicates that it might be a problem with a networking or firewall stack, I removed the Cisco VPN client, rebooted and was able to immediately Activesync on both my work laptop and my home machine.

The next piece of luck was that after installing the latest version of the Cisco VPN client (4.7.00.0533), Activesync still works.

Steven

Posted by: aadadams

Before getting my computer to sync I had a VPN client installed as well. I ended up reformatting my HD though, and I have not reinstalled the VPN client.

Is there a 3rd party app out there that will allow AS 4.1 to synch via WiFi? (a la Pre 3.8).

Thx, Sabesh.

- I repaired my Lan and I finally got my K-Jam to say connected. But when I click on ad or remove programs, the add or remove programs window stops responding ((

This probably doesn't solve your problem completely, but although I can't do a total sync via Wi-Fi, AS 4.1 seems to allow me to Send/Receive via Wi-Fi, allowing for at least a mail sync. More importantly for me, it allows me to use GPRS for my regular syncs as items arrive and use Wi-Fi to download attachments as necessary. The regular sync uses very little GPRS data and the Wi-Fi allows me to access large files for free.

Posted by: whtrbt7

Unfortunately there is no 3rd party aaplication to Activesync via WiFi available but if you really need to Activesync wirelessly, I recommend picking up a hosted Exchange service so you can Activesync OTA to the EAS. AS4.x is still very raw so it will take some time for the debuggers to really work out all the kinks. I have my fingers crossed for version 4.5 which is probably when most of the issues will be worked out.

Posted by: iboj007

Why is 4.1 so damn slow with the 9100?

My calendar has been "processing" for the last 20 minutes.

Does anyone know if the 9100 can use 3.8?

Posted by: jehlinger

Is it just me, or does WM5 seem to be failing at one of the major selling points - AES running faster and smoother and push email (which you can't even do right now)?

Right now it seems that it still has a lot of bugs to be worked out.

Microsoft answers (hopefully) some issues with ActiveSync 4.0.

I would recommend not using Activesync 4.1. I find it to be VERY buggy and hangs a lot. The one that comes on the cd with your device should work a lot better.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Posted by: iboj007

Which version is the one that comes with the 9100? I don't want to open the CD.

Any link to that version would be greatly appreciated.

Posted by: churchill

don't know if it's been covered, but sometimes changing the usb port you plug into your computer will make it recognise the device. don't know why. I plugged it into my work computer in the 3rd usb socket, and got nothing. swapped it with the 1st one, and suddenly everything came to life.

Posted by: Xenious

Found out my issues were SP2 firewall related. When i got a tool to disable our corporate firewall policies and enabled the 4 global exceptions for activesync everything worked.

Hello everyone ...
Today evening I bought a new Imate K-Jam ...
Then I installed ActiveSync 4.0 .. "I didn't know that there were some problems with WM5 and Active 4.0 & 4.1"

I couldn't sync anything except installing and uninstalling programs only !! ....

Then I followed exactly as what issues of Microsoft said ... still nothing change

I hopefully ... That microsoft solf this problem as soon as possible ...

Posted by: matchtrader

OK. I have been syncing without any big issues since I got my K-Jam over a month ago (using the beta AS 4.1) I install AS 4.1 on Friday evening and the problems begin. First, I was unable to sync via my Exhange server, with the K-jam continually asking for my Exchange Server Passord, which I corectly type in each time to no avail. At this point, I could sync locally on my tablet. After working for several hours trying to get my exchange sync to work (now solved), I shut down the computer and resorted to using POP to get my mail. Then, when I restart my tablet today, I can't even sync locally. After reinstalling AS 4.1 and soft resetting multiple times, AS still won't detect my K-Jam. It doesn't matter if use USB, IR or Bluetooth. I get no connection. Nothing. Nada.

whtrbt or anyone?

This is extremely frustrating.

Posted by: spartanrob

matchtrader, I am having the exact same problem, upgraded from beta to 4.1 and can't sync at all.

UPDATE: I am now able to sync via IR, i will try via USB once this finishes.

UPDATE2: IR works fine, no luck with USB

Posted by: BRGFATHER

I have had tons of issues syncing through USB with my dell laptop and my work network with my kjam. Try Bluetooth sycning it works great.

Posted by: spartanrob

Just got BT sync working. I guess i'll use this until they fix AS. Just have to remember that you can't be plugged into USB and sync via BT, the K-Jam and PC get confused.

I thought 4.1 Official was supposed to FIX these problems...

why has it made it WORSE ?!

Please give more details...

when you plug in the device, does it say "Generic RNDIS" and then "Windows Mobile-based device" ?

Does the ActiveSync green wheel turn green at all, or does it stay grey ?

Posted by: truvisions

When I plug in the device, it makes the sound like it is connecting. The green wheel continuously turns.

Hi, I have the same frustration as many others here. I have a new sprint ppc 6700 and after removing my old AS3.8 (for my H6315), I followed all instructions but now all I get is connecting in activesync. I even got 4.1 the update and still same problem. I turned off my norton, sygate personal firewall, windows firewall and my router firewall (as well as forwarded ports in that faq). Any ideas? My HP connected fine without any issues. Thanks

Posted by: whtrbt7

You should try to KILL all firewall applications running, not just disable them. If you get a wheel that just keeps turning, most likely, one of the firewall softwares you own are interfering with Activesync.

Posted by: fadywwf316

Good point, what it turned out to be was Norton's Internet Worm Protection. I remember setting it up and it says its similar to a firewall, so I permenently disabled it because at first when I added rules for activesync, still didn't work. So now, I'm good to go while my other firewalls are running without a problem.
