I had this problem before with my P800 and P900. I used a different computer...thank goodness for 2 laptops...since those WindowsXP systems were almost blank, I went ahead and just loaded PC Suite on there.

I would strongly suggest going into hardware manager and see what all you have loaded at startup. The conflict is in your PC Suite, not Outlook because Outlook just sits there and collects email all day. Doublecheck everything that startsup when Windows boots...then disable it all, reboot and try PC Suite again.

Well, I just tried another laptop and still no go. On the second computer i even turned off all virus protection, and any other program that i could find.

Too bad you're not in Dallas nor am I flying to Florida (assuming that's where you're at by your member name) on business or else I'd help ya out. When in doubt, you can return it to where you bought it or if you want to go extreme, format your computer, install PC Suite on the first install of your newly installed O/S and run it. If only the P990i had 850...I'd be all over it like biscuits and gravy haha. Now I'm hungry.

Some questions concerning the P990?
1. Does the P990 support EDGE?
2. Do you feel the P990 is 'outdated' when compared to recent Windows Mobile-phones like the HTC Tytn?
3. Have any of you encountered 'Out of memory'-issues while using the phone?
4. Does it feel fast and 'snappy' as a regular SE (non-Symbinan) phone, or more sluggish?

I had this problem before.

The only fix I found was to uninstall MS Activesync and the Palm desktop. After that it worked. You have to completely uninstall them and not just deactivate them.

I got sick of waiting for a UK release for this thing. I got an N80.
Quad band, wi-fi, BT, EDGE, IR, uPnP, 3.2mp cam with flash, FM radio, it's got the lot.
I love SE P-Series, but my irritation at being made to wait for an eternity has lost them a UK customer for this model. It'll be the P1000 for me now, and if they mess about again they'll lose my custom on that one too. By the time it is released in this country, it will be yesterday's news

Just to throw my $.02 in.

After working with this unit for the last few days, I'll admit that even with the new firmware, IT IS BUGGY and at times UNSTABLE. I'm sure a few updates down the line should fix this. The speaker for this unit sounds crappy in caparison to the p910a (even with the eq adjusted). The 910a sounds so much crisper.

On the plus side, the headset profiles, WiFi and bigger keypad are big deals for me, besides getting the BBC to work. There are some other minor additions that I find to be pleasing but maybe not enuff for the average user of a cell phone to splurge for this kind of unit. I'm satified (even with the rapid price dropping) with my purchase.

Since I have two, I do see that depending on where you get it from makes a difference in what you get in the box. I have one with an english book and OEM CD and the other with a made to OEM CD and a foreign book. I may sell the 2nd one since its still in the box. I have yet to see one with the pen and case I've heard about.

My naked Stacey Dash pictures look SA-WEET on it also.

I had the same problem. It seems that if the picture was part of a previous OS, when you go into a contact for instance, it wont accept the picture. BUT if you open up the folder where the picture is in the pic viewer, it gives you the option to use it as a contact, wallpaper, etc pic.

Lemme know if this helps.

Also on a side note. I have abused my new toy to the point where I have 2 active connections (WiFi & BBC), a BT connection from my PC to sync my outlook and my BT headset playing my songs from the phone. Every so often it'll hiccup, but I reset the BT on the phone and all is well in the planet.

It seems that SE really stepped up their game with the features but didnt make the system stable enuff for hard core users like myself who wanna run multi apps at once.

HELP,
I have used worldmate in the past on my windows mobile phone and loved it.

I installed in on my P990 and have not been able to activate the program since installing it. I contacted worldmate and was told that it cannot be activated or updated via WAP.

Is there another setting / connection that i need to install on the phone? I used the SE OTA configurator and can connect to my t-zones, my corporate email, etc. but am still unable to get worldmate activated.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sick and tired of this P990 crap after only a few weeks!

I went back to my Noia E61 (!) because of the same problems many folks had on this forum with the P990. I've decided that i don't need a damn camera phone... I have digital camera for that purpose ;-) and so my E61 is quad band, runs fine, syncs with my MacBook Pro and Windows Box, works as a bluetooth modem, and my digital camera takes pictures which i can then load into my E61 and send ;-).

I will wait until the P1000 or whatever and whenever SE wants to work with NA users...

just my 2 cents worth... ;-)

I've used a P990 in sunlight (briefly) and it's much better than the M600i (IMO) - if that helps for comparison purposes.

Your post really makes me feel like a left out kid, I'm going to replace my K750 + HP 6515 (not even half as sexy a combo as your K790+E61) with the P990 (once it hits close to $750 CAD at ANY GTA retailer).

Ok so i just got the P990 yesterday.

When the flip is open, after 2 min the light will shut off and go into save battery mode, but when i clode the flip and its in regular position (with flip closed_ the light stays on constantly, all night...is there a setting somewhere? for flip open and flip closed?

than follow the instruction( it will be in english)
and you will have no problem!

can you do a master reset?
if you can master reste and restet the phone.
than turn the phone off eove the battry and the sim card, replace the battry and try to upgrade it!
this should help if this did not work call sonty ericsson for help!! i hope things go well!

1. Do Skype? (Eihter thru www.eqo.com) or www.soonr.com? has anyone tried it? Hows the quality?
2. Does it have a2dp and can one do voice dialling thru a BT headset?
3. Can one email voice notes or MMS them? What format does it go in?
4. How good is the biz card scanner app?

Lastly how is the keyboard as compared to say a BB o 8700 or a Treo 700wx?

How would you owners the P990 rate it overall from 1 (the worst) to 10 (the best). I am so close to pulling the trigger on getting one but I'd like a few more opinions on it. I think that a lot of review sites are biased and I'd like some hands on hofo owners real opinions of it.

Also, where are sites you can get 3rd party apps from. The only one I know of is my-symbian.com. Thanks so much, D

i would give this phone 9 out of 10

therea re options that shuld have been there such as light sensor, louder speaker and edge technology (but edg isnt that big of a factor i think 3G is better)

having used the P990, Tytn, E70-2, I think this is still the best device. The only thing is missing is Edge and the 850 band since I live in the US. If it had that....it would be a killer device.............oh and slightly faster processor such as the Tytn would be nice too.

light sensor is a feature available in some of teh PDA/cellphones
for exampel if you go to a room with low light or dark room teh phone automatically lights up and if you go to a birght room or outside you will be able to see the screen without any problem!

there's a few apps sites around having really seen anything worth buying

swiss manager and autocam are decent apps..

guys seems like the m600i is only a baby version of this.. i thought they would be more or less the same hardware aside.

No.

I would assume that there are two options with the keypad backlight. You either have it off or on.

If it's on, it's going to be on all the time (unless the device goes into standby).

If you have it on, it will be on when you use it at 10:00 am (outside in natural light) and it will be on when you use it at 10:00 pm (outside in the dark).

no no you are able to see it in the dark

if you tap on screen it will light up im just refaring if you go outside in a natral light it wil be hard to see the screen sometimes so with the light sensore like w810 you can see better!

I don't think i conveyed my message correctly.

It is LIT up in the dark. I was assuming that you meant that it automatically recognizes that you are in a dark room and lights up the keypad (i.e. light sensor)

played with the p990 today... and sad to say didn't like it too much

too big and thick (the p910i felt slimmer and more stylish imo)..a little sluggish the UI isn't that that different from the m600i...feels a touch more polished

but it is faster and the scroll wheel is 10x better at least in terms of responsiveness but still the lack of a 5 way wheel or dpad make the used to difficult either that or they have to rejigg the UI to scroll through EVERY TAB and not just certain tabs

screen looked more or less the same as the m600i

the camera is great to use on the big screen

video playback failed me.. couldn't play the video's that my k790a and e61 can.. (mp4 ~300kb)the video started to freeze and ran into buffer issues then crashed the phone. (but it's running older r4a firmware) or phone restarted for effienciency lol

qwerty keypad is very nice to use eventhough it's small i had no issues texting.

overall i don't think it can replace my k790a+e61 combo

The bluetooth earpiece or the plug in?

I've used that plug-in before with my K750 - it's not that great, but the bluetooth is very nice!!!

Yeah the headset it comes with bites, BUT the BT is outstanding now that I can use my HT-820. Music on the go in both ears wirelessly is a beautiful thing.

When you buy a P990 in Dubai, you get a free HBH-GV435. A pretty nice little headset, and uses the same charger too!!!

I just got my P990 and I also use it with FO. In FO, there's no easy way to activate speakerphone - it takes about 3 menu presses.

It's these small things that I hope SE will correct or will be worked around by a third party application.

I rarely use bluetooth headsets, but it might work with you single headset but the sound might be mono ? I'm not sure, but yes I was referring to two headphones (like the HBH-DS970 from SE).

I don't think you can directly change it. There's a workaround given somewhere, if I find it, I'll post it.

Gentlemen -- My P800 was stolen, so I got a P910. Then that was stolen, so I just bought a P990. I am guarding this one with my life. I just successfully configured BlackBerry Connect onto my P990 (with T-Mobile USA), and it works great, but I'm kinda a newbie, and I have two basic questions: (i) Is there a way to change the name of an email account as it appears in the basic "Messaging" view? Right now, the entire email address shows up in the line. I'd like to label my gmail account as simply "Gmail" instead of my whole email address appearing on the line. (ii) How can I re-order the email accounts in the basic "Messaging" view? (I don't like having to scroll down in order to reach an email account to check email.) These aren't mission-critical qeustions, but if you can assist, much appreciated. BigFeat, you seem to be a true playa with the P990...perhaps you can help....

Can I ask how you configured with T-mobile USA the BB connect? I've been trying to do it for awhile and I get the same old story of we don't support this product so we can't do it. What magical word did you say to them?

Doesn't work for BIS email accounts.

Can't you change this on the T-Mob BIS configuration site? I was able to change the name of the account and re-send the service books. It seems though that with my BES setup, I only receive one BIS account service book.

If that doesn't work, make the change on the website, and re-provision the p990 (and maybe re-send the service book after as well).

Are you using the phone with the flip on ? If so, the left soft key is the top most button on the left side of the flip.

ok all you have to do is call yourself from a land line
and when you are during the call press "more" than transfare sound to speaker phone!
if this is not working call sony ericasson fro free help!

Is there a shortcut to mute the handset with Flipped Closed before it connects? This was possible with the P910, but it seems like the MORE function is only active once the call has connected.

ashoo....vid.playback looks fine...but batt. life is decent with the phone but not great; so playing a movie will probably drain much life out of it.

Re: Stability. Has a memory management problem. Hopefully that can be solved in future firmware upgrades. Somehow or another it (mine at least) has a tendency to deplete itself of memory and needs to be rebooted.

I bought mine abroad so I can't tell you how much it costs in Canada. But for a comparable product, and dare I say it.......a better product. You might want to look at the Motorola MING (apparently there's a NA equivalent). Only drawback with the MING is that it is touchscreen ONLY.

It has the branding that seems to slow it down quite a bit, I want to remove it. It already had the latest firmware installed so running SEUS didn't do anything except for reset it.

Sorry if this has been asked before, I am somewhat desperate to unlock the phone, is there a method that is free and obviously done via the usb interface? Thanks!

Forget about trying to hack this unit (for free). If you want an unbranded handset I'd suggest you buy a sim-free handset like the rest of us. You will be running into more issues with this handset like update availabilities. These are things that SE has been on top of since the release of the P800. If you manage to even unlock it with hardware/software (normal method) you will still having issues updating through SEUS as your CDA sequence will still be locked.

In the same token you are getting a reduced priced for the handset by going through Orange. SE has agreements with all these carriers and they can't let users tamper with customized software.

So what you're looking for is a method to hack SE's entire server infrastructure. It is illegal. We're 4 generations into the Pxxx series, so if you're expecting someone to post that on here by now then forget it.

ask your provider for the unlock code... no 3rd party unbranding for p990i yet... but maybe soon

I contacted Orange and they seemed uncertain as so whether it was possible to unlock the phone, after some research they agreed to send me an unlock code via e-mail for £20. I hope they got the e-mail right, I had to repeat it in nato keywords three times though. Damn!

Anywho, after my first initial charge the battery ran out today (The phone completely turned off after the counter went to 0% which was quite fast might I add). I put it into the cradle, it turned on and then showed the message "Replace main batteries" before going into the normal charging screen. Is this normal or has the battery developed a fault? I initially used the phone for a few hours before plugging it in to charge for the first time.

It sounds like the charging circuit on the battery had a brain fart. It it somewhat common, but these batteries are tricky. It's not so much the phone at that point. In that case, you need to allow it to deplete completely, remove it, then allow it to charge for a few hours (4 hrs min).

Unlocked the phone, Orange was quick with the codes although their instructions were a little weird.

My T-Mobile SIM cards works just fine, I just can't figure out where to find the settings to configure the phone to work with all the T-Mobile internet settings /etc as the Sony Ericsson Phone Setup page is broken (Just says unable to send at this time).

Plus, the battery - is it supposed to not have a very long life? Seems like I am down to 65% after mild usage from just this morning. (Was in an area with bad signals though maybe that counts?)

Hi saltank,
If you got to the T-Mobile UK website then support then settings you can select from a list of phones that aren't even available on T-Mobile yet and send all settings plus e-mail accounts set up also. The last page that confirms the settings has a pin code that you need to unlock and install the sms messages, hope this is of help.

T-Mobile only has the option to set up your E-mail for the P990i and unlike the earlier models which have the options for WAP/MMS the P990i section doesn't..

the Sony Ericsson support page still gives me:

Unfortunately, the server encountered an internal error and could not complete your request. Please check that you typed the address (URL) correctly.

I've gotta say, Orange coverage esp. 3G coverage is 50% better than T-Mob.

Personalized ringtones dont seem to not work right. My default for all calls works, but when I assign a ringtone to someone, it still uses the default for everyone.

I did get my RSS working again.

L Bo, yes I had the same problem, although I didn't get to try it out much it played the default ringtone for all.

I had the battery run out completely this morning (After being on for Saturday and Sunday with no turn-off) I plugged in the power cord to get it charging and it displayed "Replace main batteries" dialogue again. Interesting, does this mean that the battery in my phone is defective?

I can't wait until newer firmware, browsing through contacts is really laggy especially with the jog dial and even though I haven't had the phone crash a single time yet, I've had pictures I've taken show up as "corrupt" and applications close on random.

Excellent phone other than that.... oh and I still can't configure the WAP/MMS. the Sony Ericsson phone set up site seems totally broken, the t-mobile website doesn't have the auto-configure settings for the P990i and manually imputting the correct settings in the connections settings still brings up the errors that it can't find any WAP.

I don't know if this has been asked or not,

When I purchased the phone, the seller told me the phone had chinese support in it. I looked in the manual and talked about how to type in chinese. But when I went to use the phone, I don't even see the chinese language option under

menu > tools > control panel > other > select language >
I tried installing the new firmware under chinese language, but nothing. Can someone help me out?

Is your P990i able to display Chinese?

create a new message, then press both the bottom left hand corner key + space bar at the same time. If your P990i support chinese input, this will toggle to it.

what's your full CDA details under Systems Information?

for the time being, you can download chinese fonts files that will allow your P990i to display Chinese characters. The files & instructions can be found in my-symbian, secentral and esato.

Congrats on the phone, I don't think you can use it as a flash light (not 100% sure have never tried) The best app that you need for this phone is Swiss manager.

Agreed. Swiss mgr is a very nice all in 1 UIQ app. I have the free version installed. Does anybody think SM Pro is worth the money?

BTW, I finally put away my N80 and moved to the P990. Can't say I really enjoy the phone since I still have problems setting up my emails and WiFi. I will keep reading / searching the FAQs. Pls feel free to share any additional resources with newbies like me. Thank you.

I cant connect to yahoo using IM+. I can see a sign that I am online, but IM+ is not connected. I used all ports I found in FAQ at shapeservices.com but got nothing. IM+ still cant connect to yahoo.

Swiss Manager looks like a useful app. I will try it once more stable firmware comes out.

Regardless, I have seem to run in to a really weird problem. I'm using my T-Mobile SIM in the unlocked Orange P990i and today the phone started showing something like "no provider" and then showing a full signal from T-Mobile while trying to make calls it gives me two / three beeps and only goes through on the fourth fifth attempt. If I try to call the number it just goes straight to voice mail! The Orange SIM meanwhile, is in a Motorola L6 that is always switched on, but I don't take it anywhere with me. It doesn't work any more either. What the hell is going on?

I've tried swapping the SIM cards (I put in an Orange PAYG card in there temporarily) and it seems to work fine, but now with the T-Mobile card it doesn't budge.

I wonder if Orange support will unveil something new like "Even though you paid us money to unlock the phone you can't use another provider with it" ?

I answered this in another thread, AOL changed their settings and shape is working on a new version of IM+. They sent me a working .sis, but it keeps crashing. They're now checking into whether it's the app or my phone I think

@ irfan -- there is definitely a way to change the icons on display in flip-closed mode. i know this because i've detached the flip and use my P990 in flip-open mode 100% of the time, and when i called sony ericsson to figure out how to change the icons in the status bar (or remove it), i was told that is definitely not possible, but that in flip-closed mode, it's easy to change the icons.

@ everybody -- what's the fastest way to turn on the speakerphone (either before or during a call) in flip-open mode?

This was a big issue for me on the P800, P900 and P910 where the silly PC Suite app would NOT be able to sync the Outlook contact sub-folders to contact folders on the phone.
Every contact item (and all other PIM item types: calendar, tasks, etc.) would be filed under the -interestingly called- "Unfiled" folder. And I remember having a back and forth email discussion with SE at the time and they told me that they simply dont support it and wont do it
Has anyone tried this on the new P990? Does it work now?

hey guys, got a P990 yesterday after having the P910 for a while and a K800 for a few months...got a coupla questions...

Is there anyway to have the clock float around the screen after a few minutes like the K800 and older P series?

I can see where to turn off predictive text, but is there anyway to turn off word prediction? it's VERY annoying and i could turn it off on my K800...can't figure it out on the P990

I've had a nother REALLY strange thing happen to with my phone.

I am not sure if it's related to the carrier, the phone itself or the fact that the phone is unlocked and on that carrier or if T-Mobile "doesn't support the P990i"..

At work, our offices are in the Finchley area of London and as odd as it is, that situation i've described above has happened to several people with T-Mobile. Some people on T-Mobile were unaffected, as far as I could tell only the people with an unlocked phone with T-Mob had problems. Someone also had the P990i like myself and they had the same problems.

now what happens is, If I call someone or someone calls me, I can't hear ANYTHING, if I call for example 150 it starts to count the time that the call is going on for but I don't hear anything, then maybe after a minute the sound kicks in and I hear the lady talking.

If I tried to call someone, I wouldn't hear them and it would take 5 continuous attempts to call them so I can hear them.
What a weird problem, not sure what to do since I'm not the only one with this problem.

My old phone was the W900i where a single contact is enable to save several numbers such as the work,mobile,fax,others. I backup everything to the SIM and I am not sure did i copy it to the P990i everything just show one liners like John/O, John/M anyway to categorize it back to its default state?

And also how do i organize my Sim contacts and phone settings instead of mixing everything together. It's also very frustrating when the inbox has the same problem, save sim's message are display with the current inbox.

Yeah the SIM won't store all those numbers for a single contact, that's only for the phone, you have to store your contacts on your PC and sync with the P990.

Easiest method of getting contacts from one SE to another is to Bluetooth them across. On your W900 the contacts menu should have Send All as an option, once you've done the pairing bit, sit back and wait for them all to be sent across. Only took 30 seconds to move from my P910i to my P990.

I had that prob with the radio as well. A simple reboot fixed it, though.

the + after the contact name indicates that the contact number is saved at multiple locations, i.e. in sim and on phone or at two locations in phone etc

Opera mini picks the best connection at the time, so most likely you used 3G first. If you go into Tools and Settings in Opera mini, re-run the network test at home and it should find the wifi. But you'll need to run it again when you want to use the 3G.
As for pictures in the default, with the stylus hold the picture and a submenu should popup allowing you to save the picture. if not you'll need to use swiss manager to root through the internet cache and the picture will be the last one in the directory.

Currently using JonnyChat, but the program won't allow me to have my regular buddy list despite the fact that I'm on a T1 wifi line.

Been using the p990i for 2 weeks now not much problem with the latest R7A firmware. WHat happend was my phone ran out of battery yesterady swap my sim card with another phone. As i inserted back the sim card to the P990i, it couldnt really read my sim card numbers. when i click view all sim card numbers nothing shows up. and i tried to copy all phone contacts to the sim card it says sim not ready. Wierdly some incoming calls it shows the caller ID like John and the number but without the (+) i remember i used to have it last time and some incoming calls just shows the number without caller ID eventhough the contact number is already save. its very annoying what should i do? thanks.

Hi guys

I have just received my new 990i, and have a problem with the calendar. In flip closed mode I hit the left hand side key to open the calendar. It opens but on Jan 1. I then hit the left or right key to change the date or try and "go to" the correct date and it crashes with the reason 3 most times.

Doing the same with the open flip results in the same problem most times too.

Is this a common problem? I'm updating the software as we speak - it didn't need it but..... so hopefully that'll help.

WOW, that is the first time I heard that somebody else besides me has that problem! I have tested different SIMs and different (original SE!) P990s all with the same problem! It also affects the voice dial names!!!
My only solution to this is transferring the contacts into the phone and then have the SIM empty!!! Only then, all works. But if only a few numbers remain on the SIM, then after a restart the phone won't read the SIM and all your and mine problems happen.
It is really annoying and actually not acceptable. Let's see if the new FW will help with this problem.

Ok, figure this may not be the best place for this but with a bunch of 990 users why not try. I had my 990 3 or 4 weeks and managed to break my screen. I'm really tough on phones. Anyways, i got some help and got a backup of the phone done. Talked to SE and it seems my solution to fix the screen may be easier to purchase a replacement screen myself, as cost for them to repair is ridiculous. In the meantime that i'm attempting to locate and purchase a screen, which if anyone has other places then cellular nationwide network (there p990 picture is of a p910's screen) then please let me know. I however would like to get some other data off the phone that i can't seem to find, and am not sure if theres a way to read through the backup file for it or not. Information like emails, SMS's and some organizer items. I'm looking for a software like remote p900 that allowed control and viewing of the cell screen but will work on the UIQ 3 OS. If i can find and purchase, then i guess i would need some help in setting up the .sis file on the phone so that i can get what i need off. If anyone can help me anywhere in this quest i would appreciate it. If someone knows of a way to load up the backup files and read through it please let me know. Or of a online store to purchase the remote software.

They lady i spoke with couldn't give me a price to just fix the screen, however for anything that was wrong within limits, she said i would be charged a flat fee of $255.00. If there was something really wrong with the phone, then it could be more. I know i have seen replacement screens for $100 bucks before, theres just not that many out there currently. And since Cellular nationwide networks site shows a p910 sceen instead of 990 i'm kind of weary of making that purchase and ending up with what was pictured. Ah well on with the hunt!

The P990 would have been my next phone had Sony Ericsson made a 990a or other 850/quad-band model. I previously owned both the P900i (reception was horrible in my area) and P910a (great reception), being quite happy with the latter until it suddenly lost its onboard ROM (went back to SE for re-flash). I'm still hoping that SE eventually produces an 850/quad model. Until then I'm staying with my Cingular 8525...

Let me give u a example, when ur playng music, and press back and go back to the activity menu, there is a line that says what song ur playing and the time left etc... My n80 used to do the same as that for Notes/tasks, does the p990 not support it?
