Hey guys, I just got the LG VX9800 for a birthday gift. I've been going to forums and reading everywhere on how to modify the phone. I'm just a little confused on whats what. So if you can answer some questions, thanks so much.
Does the VX8100 Data Cable work with VX9800?
Which Data Cable works best?
Once I have the cable, how do I move mp3s to my phone to make ringtones?
How do I move pictures to make a background on my phone?
Do I need a program to do the above two?
What program(s)?
Do I need a data cable to fix around mp3s/pictures to be sent to my phone to make ringtones/wallpapers or can I just use the Bluetooth feature?
I see Bitpim being thrown around in forums, what is it exactly?
If Bitpim is a program that fixes mp3s/pics to ringtones/wallpapers, is it easy to do?
Lastly, does the VX9800 have space on the phone to store music/pictures or do I have to get a MiniSD card to load music/pictures?
Thanks alot guys,
lets go home

My best advice is to read your manual. I just got this phone today and have just been messing around with it. I've had LG phones in the past so I have a pretty good base background on their menus and such. I do know that you will NEED to buy a Mini SD.. which I will be buying soon. I suggest a 512 MB or possibly a 256. I think the Mini SD is one of the best features this phone has. As far as making Mp3's into ringtones, I've read that it has something to do with the Bitpim thing, but I honestly know nothing about that. This is an awesome phone and I'm still learning as well, just not the basics. I suggest you just play around with the phone both opened and closed.. and read the manual. It'll definitely help. Good luck.

I bought a cable off Ebay that said it was for the 8100 series, and I was able to get it to work for Dial up Networking (DUN) thru a software called QuickLink Mobile. However I am having trouble getting BitPim (software comes with cable) to see the phone. I am also searching thru all these threads and since everyone else here seems to know what they are doing or can intuitively figure out the work-around, I too am having trouble figuring it all out. It kinda sucks because you will be told to read the stickies, but I am reading the stickies and not finding what to do when/if you have a problem with "this." And everything is abbreviated assuming one has loaded ringtones on a phone before (not the case for me
) I am about to give up and pay 10$ to Verizon and DL my ringtones thru get it now since I'm stumped.

Go online and get the latest bitpim version. It has an option for the 8100 and I think I left my default at auto detect for the com port. Hook phone up and open bitpim and all you'll see is a plus symbol inside a box. Click on that to expand the tree. Open brew, then 16452, then follow the directions in the stickies. But there and /dload is where you'll be tinkering around.
Hey, so maybe the left hand isn't talking to the right here, hence the questions. Check out this side of the bored: Verizon LG
For the ringtunes, record a 30 second clip of whatever music and make sure the volume is loud while recording. Save as mp3. This is your ringtone. Follow directions on sticky to get it on phone through bitpim... easy enough.
The 8100 manual kinda stinks in that it barely gives the user any clue about each function of the phone. It'll tell you how to change something, but won't explain any more.
Or was the ringtune midi? Heck I don't remember. Good luck.

it's the same as the 8100 filesystem wise. so that's where you can learn how to do the ringtones.
and using BitPim tell it it's the 8100, and turn filesystem view on. Make sure you are using the new version of Bitpim, so go download it:
http://www.bitpim.org I think.
It has 50mb of memory on the phone,
however, only 3MB of ringtones/sounds and 5MB of Pixs are recognized.
The rest is used for Flix, or VCast, or Applications.
and it has 10 megs of ram, or more likely, 14. (50 +14 = 64MB)
I love the phone. I have a 1GB mini-SD card and I download videos and convert them to .3gp, 320x240 with 48 bit rate, 16k sample rate, and 2 channels (stereo) with Xilisoft 3GP Video Converter, and they play wonderfully. Remember to press the Up button to full screen the image.
