70 ringtones on vx6100 please help

OK, I need some help. I have read and read and read, but I can't seem to find the answer to this problem. If it is right under my nose somewhere, please point me to it.

Anyway, I hear you can have 70 or so ringtones on the vx6100 by placing them in the mms/sound and mms/sound/drm directories and deleting the index files. I can't get this to work. The files will show up in the filesystem, but not in the phone menus. The only way I could sort of get this to work was to overwrite the stock melody tunes. But even at that, it is still named melody and it just resets itself when the phone is cycled. so, how do i make this work? what am I doing wrong?
