What is the antenna for on the Nextel BB?

What is the antenna for on the Nextel BB? (I don't know the model number but it looks like the 7290) Is it for the PTT part or the voice part?

Posted by: OJ330i

I'd have to say that it was for the PTT feature. Thats the only thing that nextel has that no other company primarly uses.

Wirelessly posted (Blackberry 7520.|: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry7520/4.0.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

Actually, it has everything to do with the incoming signal frequency which serves both direct connect and cellular voice--not one or the other....

NXTL's frequency cannot penetrate the phone itself, so it requires an external antenna for this.

Nextel's iDEN network operates on 800MHz and 1900MHz; same as all North American carriers...

My thinking is that the carrier requested this feature to offer better signal gain on the device.

Since it doesn't seem like anyone knows the real exact answer I'll add even more imput. I think its there simply because of the PTT feature. In some of Nextels coverage areas they don't provide nationwide PTT and I think this is where the antenna comes in. It will allows people in low signal areas and non data type areas to still use the PTT feature.

I'm just guessing though.

Easier to get it out the holster???

No it doesnt. Nextel only runs off of 800/900 (canada), there is no 1900 present.

Your post makes no sense by the way.

The antenna is clearly there to catch on your coat, shirt and to be accidentally bent when removing the device. I have rarely if ever extended the antenna. On the rare occassions that I have done so hoping for a signal boost - I didn't notice much of anything.

My guess? Ornamental.

Didn't the FCC recently take away some 800MHz and 900MHz spectrum from Nextel and replace it with 1900MHz due to interference issues?

They did not, they moved to a higher 800 freq so far, but eventually we will go to the 2.5 spectrum when the iDen network is givin to the government. But as of right now we are at 800, if we did change all handsets would have to change.

When it walks like a Duck and quacks like a Duck I think you should just call it a Duck and move on???

In teh past, it has ALWAYS been a requirement for all Nextel phones to have an antenna. The Blackberry is not an exception.

Greg, does the 7100i fit comfortably in a front pocket? Looks like it might be a bit bulky, but less than the 7520. I'm trying to avoid a belt clip. Also, what's the screen like in sunlight?

7100i is more narrow and longer than the 7520 which is wide. Yep it does fit in a pocket of loose clothing. Wish they had a slip in belt holster that has a built in swivel clip that locks around your belt instead of just sliding on.

Two different screen types. The 7100i is not as good at the 7520 in sunlight but darn good in poor/dim lighting. The 7100i screen is more than suitable. The pictures make the 7100i look big but it really is not. SURETYPE keyboard, well only time will tell.

How's WiDEN. Is it noticably faster?

How the hell doesn't my post make any sense? Nextel is the only carrier to primarly provide PTT. Nextel has areas where they have coverage but no nation wide PTT coverage. Hence short range PTT over local non data cell towers. How the hell does that not make sense?

ok now you tell me how this does not make any sense.

Also as I stated in my orignal post the antenna is required for the 800 frequency.

Still makes sense to me big guy.

1st post = must be used for PTT.
2nd post = I don't really know but here's my input on a guess.
3rd post = verified that it was just my opinion which is a guess.

Yep, still makes perfect sense to me.

Your opinion about the 800mhz freq, doesn't make sense because I'm sure there are other phones out there that operate on 800mhz but don't require Nextels bulking antenna.

But I really am not in the mood for a pissing match. My opinion makes sense to me (and probably a lot of others) since Nextel is the only company that primarly uses PTT, hence they are the only ones to have the antenna.
You opinion about 800mhz, well there are other phones out there that operate on the same freq but don't require the antenna.

There is no other service provider that runs of iDen's 800mhz frequency.

also other carriers do have PTT i.e. VZW, SPCS, and Cingular soon. Also Nextel's towers are built much different to, but I will not get into that since it would be a little off topic.

Keep in mind (not that it matters) I work for Nextel

Posted by: OJ330i

Well since you work for Nextel than you would have to know a lot more than what I am assuming. But what I mean by all the PTT comments is that Nextel Prides itself on PTT. Other carriers are just adding it where they can and I don't think many are have sucess with it because most new phones don't have it. Every Nextel phone has PTT, maybe 1 out of 4 for other carriers have PTT.

it is to chew on while you are thinking
