Best Phone at GSM 850 Reception?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: b dizzle fizzle

Which phone would you say has the best GSM 850 (Cingular's main freq in the US) reception?

I'm in a bad reception area, and have pretty good reception with my RAZR, T637 and S710a, but not great, and it varies dramatically as I move around in my bedroom...from full strength to nothing. The S710a seems to be the worst of the three, which really surprised me.

Anyway, I need to find a phone that is really stellar at 850 reception, and would love your recommendations.

TIA!

Nokia is probably your best bet.

Thanks, but not necessarily. My RAZR beats the 6280 on 850.

I need specific models.

Nokia 6010, Nokia 6230b, Nokia 6682, Nokia 6620

Put my vote in for the 6230b

3595/6010 are RF tanks

Yep no question!

The Nokia 6682 and the Sony Ericsson P910a have been BY FAR the two best phones I've used for RF.

i thought the razr was.... great rf

I recently aquired a used, beat up 3590 (same family as the 3595/6010 but with the monochrome screen) and I have to say that in my tests around the San Francisco Bay Area over the weekend, I didn't get a single dropped syllable or a disconnected call. Not once.

Sure, a little background hiss, but perfectly tolerable. It will serve as my backup.

I'll toss my vote towards 3595

Yep. I got my grandmother a 3590. These phones can be had for free if not almost free.

By RF tanks do you mean they are like army tanks never dropping a call or that their performance tanks and they're always having problems?

Posted by: WirelessAndy

Around these parts, tank is a good thing.

I'm gonna go waaaaay out on a limb and say that my old 3600 was probably the best performing (RF wise) phone that I have ever used.

that thing worked everywhere and I do mean everywhere.

I think he means never tanks as in never dropping calls combined with great RF. It we were talking Motorola phones, the other definition would be true.

Despite the flaws I find in the motorola razr v3, I actually find it to be a good performer in the RF and call quality arena. Audio sounds good on both the receiving and sending end on this phone. But the RF is still put the same by the classic 3590/3595/6010 series. However this can be said about almost any phone.

Roger that. The Nokia 3600 is the KING. Gets signal in rolling rural hills where my gf's 6230b drops off - and that 6230b has better reception than the 6010 I had. So much RF flying into my brain that it makes my head warmer... kind of like a mini-microwave

For me : RAZR has been the king of reception, better than my Nokia 6230

Yeah my Razr has better RF than the 6230b also, but the 3600 is a whole step up from those two.

Posted by: Interenter

Yup -- I will admit in addition to my previous post that the Nokia 3600 is right up there. I still own one and my wife actually prefers using it.

Yeah. The Motorola V3 is the exception. I bet Steve Jobs had a hand in it....

Best RF phone i've ever used was the Nokia 3595. No other GSM phone I had (nokia 6800, 7610) could get signal but 3595 could pick up a tower (with obstructions) that was 10+ miles away and it was really nice since none of the other phones would work!

I agree the Nokia 3595 has great reception capabilities, along with the Nokia 5165 for TDMA.

as stated, 3595/6010 is the best RF performer Cingular has. Hands down

I've upgraded RAZR with latest 42.09R firmware for couple of friends, they all drove around LA and reported incredible results, with one or even no bars, it still sounds clear and not dropping calls.

you work at a Moto service center?

Posted by: igorunia3

no, i'm just an average computer guy
i have all the toys required to do firmware upgrades and i bought smartclip so i can backup and unlock motorola phones.
i did the same thing for my phone and call quality greatly improved with 850,
it was cutting out a lot with original cingular software.
we've compared call quality inside of the building and RAZR with 1 bar sounded clearer than sprint and verizon phones with 2 bars, only moto v710 with verizon also sounded very clear.
usually most new phones only having trouble indoors, where we have lower signal and a lot of interference.

I just got a RAZR, and I have to say that its reception is better than the 3595/6010 (I have both). The voice clarity is amazing too, better than any other phone I've tried. I just hope the phone doesn't tear up as I've had this love/hate thing with Motorola. They can make awesome phones, but it seems sometimes they choose not to (case in point--the inconsistent quality or lack thereof of the v180 and v220--I was not impressed).

I own the Motorolla V551 and it has EXCELLENT RF reception. I use it inside my house and I get excellent reception.
It's a much better phone than my 6230 which had no reception at all.

I agree with others, Nokia is the way to go. I was in the same boat as you, the reception in my room was terrible. I had a razr, and sometimes I was able to make/receive calls, but they almost always dropped.

I used the nokia 6320, and I got all calls, it was great, and I also used the Nokia 3010, or whatever the gophone is that Cingular is selling for 30.00. It was a GREAT phone to use in my room only.

nokia 6230b and 3595,3590 rf performers in gsm 850 band w internal antenna

Posted by: dasupaman23

My Nokia 7610b has been performing like a champ. I don't think I have dropped any calls to date. I'm glad I made the jump from Moto to Nokia.

That's funny cuz mine was horrible--locked up all the time and missed calls left and right--might have been jsut that particular phone don't know. It was a neat little phone though. I still love motos over nokias in the long run--I think it's because I prefer flips to candy bar style.

The razr has been my champ for 850 and other bands--RF has been awesome!!
