Where to buy 850Mhz Nokia 9300

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I know the Cingular release is pending this or next month, but I'd like to buy an unsubsidized 850/1800/1900 9300 ASAP. Any suggestions of a reputable vendor that has them (other than trolling on eBay for one)?

Take a number

I have been waiting for one since Sep 8 2004 and no luck so far. I tried to bit on eBay several times, but I do not think I can justify to pay for it over $1500.

Posted by: Implicit

Well there were about 10 of them on eBay the past 2 weeks that sold for under $600. The buyers posted positive feedback to the seller so I doubt it was a scam. I'm sure they are coming to other places... its all just a question of when.

Posted by: big-poppa3

According to Cingular (CSP) they are due to be released in early November. I actually believe it this time, since their already showing up on the rebate forms and the like. guess will see if it gets pushed back (again and again) like everything else the Cingular does (PTT, 6682 anyone)

Posted by: Implicit

I'm less interested in the Cingular release... I'm ready to buy the phone outright... I don't want something that is subsidized and tied to a contract.

Why doesn't Nokia just list them for sale on thier site like PalmOne did with the Treo 650

Posted by: big-poppa3

true, but I think it'll end up like the 6682, where it wasn't (really) available until it's Cingular release. I'd be willing to bet that once it's released for cingular, it'll be for sale through the Nokia site.

Posted by: Implicit

Lets hope so... I want to get this Treo on eBay ASAP! Might revert back to my T616 in the meantime...

Posted by: macallan

Cingular will be more than happy to sell you one without a contract. It's just that the price will not be subsudized.

Posted by: nickp

The thing you have to be careful about is purchasing 850MHz units prior to them being released by Nokia/Cingular. As of now, the unit has still not been released and if there are actually 850 units floating around, they are engineering samples and not supported by Nokia. Good luck getting them upgraded or repaired.

I stopped at my local Nokia Experience store and spoke to a very knowledgable rep. The stores are showing 900MHz models as they themselves do not have access to the 850 units.

Buyer beware on e-bay !! You will be paying top dollar for what could turn into a paper weight. Much like the situation with the Moto MPX units a while back.

Posted by: MaureenMun

Some of the ebay sellers are just copying outdated information from the Nokia website on their auctions. I emailed back and forth a while back with one of these guys who had 850/1800/1900 in bold on top and 900/1800/1900 in smaller print towards the bottom of the auction info. He confirmed that, oops, it was 900, not 850, and he'd just cut and pasted the info from somewhere else. I doubt that any of the Ebay phones are 850, and the buyers may not realize it ever if they are on TMobile (which has 1900 only).

T-Mo now has 850Mhz roaming so that is no longer accurate.

Really?! Where does this roaming apply?

On topic, RIM has said that they have a good deal of control over when the 9300 is launched... I'm assuming becuase the phone has BB connect. Last I heard from the Nokia/RIM reps, it will launch Nov. 1st. I don't know if this is a confirmation or a "we'd like to launch it Nov. 1st," but at least they were talking about it.

Amazon now lists the 9300 from Cingular. Says delivery is 1-2 weeks.

$499 w/o plan
$200 with plan and rebates

if you go to www.amazon.com and type 9300 in the search box it shows you what I cut & pasted above. If you click on THAT link it shows what you see. It's clear that what you see is the more accurate info, sorry I reported info that I saw on the amazon site that appears to be inaccurate.

Yes, I also found the 9300 on Amazon with estimated two week delivery.

Only question would be, although you can buy it without a service plan, it still says Nokia 9300 (Cingulair). What is the likelihood that this is a SIM locked phone only useful witha Cingulair account? I am a T-mobile sub.

I do not think this is a big problem to unlock any Nokia phone.

Posted by: ASimpleFarmer

cingular will be selling it B2B in november

Posted by: inthomas

Actually, by pure chance -- not skill -- I happen to be on the Amazon site when the 9300 phone first came on. It was $499 w/o service, but, as noted above in a prior post, it also says (Cingular). My purchase was Oct 12 and it is still not showing 'sent' yet.

In the meantime, I got a P910a from Buy.com for $400, so I will probably send the 9300 back when, and if, it arrives. BUT, before I do, I'll try my T-Mobile SIM in it and see it it is indeed locked to Cingular.... or not.... and report.

BTW I also got a 9500 direct from Nokia way back when, so know what the "generic 9500/9300" looks like and I should be able to tell if the 9300 from Amazon has been hyjacked by Cingular. (I sent the 9500 back because my contract, at that time, prohibitted camera phones on site).

Posted by: Amphicar770

Has anyone had experience buying one of the US spec 9300s on evilBay. What sort of warranty are they coming with AND is it a US warranty? One seller, with lots of positive feedback, tells me it comes with a 1 year Nokia warranty but did not say if that is US or Elbonia. Likewise, if Nokia has not oficcially released these, will they honor the warranty in event of problem.

I really want the 9300 but may just have to go with Sony P910 or the new Blackberry which at least has a firm release date set. These delays with Nokia are getting ridiculous.

Posted by: nickp

I would be cautious. If Nokia has not even released the 850 version to Cingular yet, or made it available for purchase on thier US site, how are these guys getting units. My assumption would be that they are pre production, pre release, stolen, or some other circumstance that Nokia would not want anything to do with, from a warranty perspective. And if you do purchase one of these, and let's say it does not have the BlackBerry Connect software, but the released version does, how willing do you think Nokia will be to update the firmware.

I find myself always wanting the latest things, and certainly share the frustration when releases are delayed. But in the scheme of things, another week or month wait to get a new, released product, is worth it to me.

Good Luck

How about waiting another year of even never be able to gat it at all?

Because that how it looks to me. I just called Cingular B2B and they told me that as of now they are no longer planning to release 9300 in US because they just got new HP and BlackBerry devices, so they do not want any more complicated devices to support.

… and all that fancy Press Releases are just BLA BLA BLA again!

All I am saying is that if someone has their heart set on a 9300, I would purchase a released one. The old Moto MPX fiasco comes to mind. There are a lot of folks out there that purchased $1000 paper weights.

There are certainly always other options besides the 9300.

Posted by: pm0bile

Are you sure 9300 US version comes with 850? All I have seen in the Finnish media and some other sites that it is 900/1800/1900 with extra WiFi and more powerful battery, just curious to know... Partner of mine is actually using one purchased from Finland (Europe version) and it works fine.

Correction: The original announcement that I saw 10/18/05 was wrong (900/1800/1900) The correct info says in Nokias page that it is going to be (850 instead of 900) Sorry.

Take it from a salesman:

That's just a salesman trying to sell you what he has in stock. He knows that you might buy today, and if you walk out the store, he may neve see you again.

Posted by: Amphicar770

Hi All,

OK, I bit the bullet and ordered the 9300 USA version from the guy on evilBay who had a few of them. Maybe they will oficially come out tomorrow but I figure the Amazon price without contract was only $100 more so what the heck.

Before ordering I contacted some of the people who had purchased these from the seller already. The responses were all very positive. I will share my own expereince when it arrives. I do plan to load the BBerry Connect. Here is a reply I received from one fellow who already has his .....
=====
I received my 9300 from BMCustoms new in the box. The firmware version is 5.22(01) 03-06-2005. I have not had any trouble with the phone at all, I am glad I got the 850mhz model because I use both Tmobile and Cingular sims in it and I get great reception with both. I have registered my warranty at nokiausa.com with no problems, I even got a $20 coupon for accessories. I do not use the blackberry services as we run Exchange here and I am going to use Roadsync to enable activesync to our exchange server. My only issues I have had so far are with some of the preinstalled software like active desk. I registered activedesk and have had a problem with the main page not showing my calendar entries unless I tab to the field they should be in. Once I do that they show up. I called the company that supports activedesk and they said they do not support the program on 9300. I explained to them that it came preinstalled on my 9300 and they changed their tune a bit. They then told me there would be an upgrade that would fix my issues but not until the 9300 is actually released in the US. I guess that's what I get for jumping the gun. I just couldn't wait any longer for Nokia to release the US version. 1 year after europe gets theirs is utterly rediculous. The phone automatically senses your carrier and configures internet access and time and date when it is powered up so for instance when I use my Tmobile SIM it added TZones to my connectivity choices. When I added my Cingular Sim it added the Cingular GPRS connection automatically. ...

OK, here is my early feedback.

I received my 9300/850 today. As mentioned, ordered it on eVilBay from that guy in NJ.

As far as the transaction itself, no complaints. Phone was shipped out immediately and came, as promised, in factory packaging, unopened, etc.

I popped my T-Mobile SIM in and settings were automatically configured. Even to the point where when I later went to set-up blackberry, T-Mobile knew I had a new device.

As others have mentioned, compared to the 9500, this unit apears almost elegant. Screen is great, keyboard is not perfect but OK. Unlike the 9500, you do not feel like a Goober carrying it around. It is a bit of a sleeper, kind of like a station wagon with a high performance engine hiding under the hood. Nokia should include at least a cheap case but other than that all is good with what is in the package.

I just installed the blackberry connect software and it does work. This did not come with the unit, I downloaded it from Nokia Germany. I also found the instructions at:
http://nds2.nokia.com/files/support...serGuide_EN.pdf
At first it kept showing my old PIN and would not connect to the hanset. After I uninstalled the old blackberry software from my 7000 series all was well. The blackberry connect handles the synching of mail and calendar. It is not clear if you should thus turn this off in the Nokia PC-Synch software although I chose to do so to avoid the potential for redundant entries in my Outlook Calendar. I do have Blackberry enterprise server here at work and the Nokia has had no problems working with that.

Using the blackberry software on the Nokia is not as smooth as on a dedicated Blackberry. First there is the issue of no vibrate feature on the 9300 (what the heck were they thinking). Messages appear in a subfolder of the messaging app so you have to navigate a small amount to get there. Not a big deal, but not the same instant "here it is" of a traditional blackberry which is really dedicated solely for that purpose.

The web browser seems pretty good based on my limited testing of it. I do not know if I am connecting via edge, I think not as the download is not especially speedy.

I do have a sense of "back to the future". Not surprisingly, I am reminded of my old Psion 5 (minus the cool expanding keyboard). I will likely install Powerdesk and a few other utilities later today.

Oh yes, before installing the Blackberry connect I did install Nokia's PC-Synch. While I did tell it to synch all, it did my celendar but none of my emails. Most likely a configuration setting, I did not try fixing it as once I had Blackberry connect running i was good to go.

Based on less than one day of use, I am glad I did not sit around waiting for Nokia to finally release these. No regrets for the moment.

Give me a few days to play with it and I will fire off a more detailed review. By then I will have a better sense of what works well, what does not work, etc.

Do you have link?

Posted by: nickp

Just got mine from the NJ eBay connection as well. Model number indicates 9300b which I believe is the 850 version. Version 5.22 Synced with my Outlook 2003 except for no Notes sync capability. Odd. The one issue I have noticed so far is the lack of Active Desk, Smart2Go and VirusGuard applications. The icons are there but when I click, I either get a application missing message or a system corrupt message.

Form factor is nice. RF signal on T-Mo is outstanding. Great inner display. It is sloooowww at times.

On POP email retrieval I have not found a way to automatically check for new messages every x minutes. Anyone know if this is possible ??

Jury is still out. I will share thoughts over the next few days.

Posted by: Amphicar770

Do not know why they put those icons there. The one for ActiveDesk prompts you to buy full version. Just delete them and you can always download or else they are on the CD.

Only glitch I am working at the moment is with blackberry access through my POP3 account on Yahoo. If I go to the tmobile site it shows that this account is added correctly, and indeed I was getting my Yahoo mail forwarded to blackberry on T7100. I deleted the Yahoo account, re-added it, got a message from activation server congratulating me for setting up acct and saying i should get emails in about 20 minutes. That never seems to happen although they are working with my BES server and my tmo.blackberry.net account. Could be some temporary glitch between yahoo and Tmobile that is just concidental. We shall see.

The email client is OK, not great, it has not advanced much over the years. Should certainly be able to auto-check for your email. (I am not doing this as it also does not have an option to get only last xx days, and I have tons of email out on my Yahoo account which I do not want to download).

Also need to figure out how to get bluetooth connect to my logitech headset. Again, could be the user so I will update you later.

UPDATE: ALL now works including Yahoo mail synch via BBConnect and my Logitech headset. Life is good!!

Posted by: big-poppa3

hey,
So far I love mine. I loaded up the BB software, which didn't come with the phone, but I found the link for it on Hofo. I'm just waiting for my company to get it together and add the package to my plan. so far no issues. I've loaded up Agile Messenger and SmartMovie so far, and both work well. FW is 4.53, so it does seem to be an older ver. Here's under the battery it says "Property of Nokia, Not for sale" so I hope it's not going to crash on me out of nowhere. if it does, I hope Cingular is carrying it so I can Warranty it through my company. Let me know if anyone else's has this same sticker. thanks

Posted by: Amphicar770

Mine came from the seller in NJ. It has firmware version 5.22 and no stickers or anything else saying "property of Nokia". As far as I can tell, this is a production ready release unit. I had no problem registering it on Nokia's website, even got the accessory coupon.

You may want to consider getting it flashed with latest firmware trough iunlock.com

Overall I am pleased with mine. The keys are a bit small, in some ways it is easier to type on the blackberry. Only glitch thus far is that while I was able to pair with my Logitech Bluetooth headset I have not actually been able to get the two to work together. If I hit the "on button" on the headset as I have done with other phones, the 9300 bluetooth icon flashes for a second but never actually links up as it should. No helpful clues in 9300 manual, will have to dig out Logitech manual.

Looks like that bm-custom NJ guy has a bunch now:

Hmm... this image from Newegg worries me that these phones might not have been made for 850Mhz North American destinations. Check out the charger:

Posted by: omegajb

As long as it has 850 it's fine for the US. I would call New Egg before buying to confirm that it's not a typo.

Posted by: naptownman22

The plug shown on the charger is an adapter that actually plugs into standard USA type prongs. You can remove it if you're not going to use the charger in Europe.

Posted by: macallan

OK, now Newegg has it for $519 including a memory card. I sent them an email asking them to verify GSM850.

Posted by: spiritraveller

Called them and asked about it. At first the csr said that it is the 850 version... but I prodded her and she admitted that all she did was check the model number on the nokiausa website. They have no additional information. I even asked to speak to a supervisor.

Posted by: Implicit

See if you can get the FCC ID

Posted by: macallan

i went ahead and ordered. I figured I can return it if it is the wrong one. I'll get it in about 3 days, I'll let ya know.

Match the FCC ID to the 850Mhz model.

their customer service sent me the following reply:

According to our specification, the wireless radio for item # 75-209-011 is Tri-band EGSM 850/1800/1900 MHz.

I still think they are just looking at the nokiausa website, but I went ahead and ordered it.

Nokia should have given the 850 version a different model number.

Is there is a way to tell if it is 850 or 900 without opening the box to refuse delivery?

If it's from Newegg they are all 900. I didn't bother looking at the box but it clearly says 900/1800/1900

They do have a 30 day return but it also says "This item is warranted through the product manufacturer only"
The first person gave me the run around but I called back and the woman I spoke to seemed to understand what happend and was happy to return it.

I ended up getting a P910a from them and it was a smooth transaction.

I wish I had more choices like that... The 9300 is pretty much the only phone that has what I want without a camera. And I can't carry a cameraphone where I work.

I ended up ordering the 850 version from bm-custom on ebay. That appears to be the only way to get it right now.

Posted by: naptownman22

I'm surprised Newegg even questioned on your first call. I've used them plenty and have requested returns when things weren't exactly as described and never got questioned or refused once. They have a great rating on all sites I trust.

Posted by: Implicit

Whats the final word on the phones on Newegg?

Posted by: omegajb

They refunded me my money but it looks like they are only stocking the 900/1800/1900. I doubt Nokia will ever release the 850 version of this phone.

Posted by: macallan

it was the 900 phone, they still have not updated their descriptions. I had no trouble returning mine for a credit.

I gave up on the Nokia. I've always wanted one of these but due to delays I went with the K-Jam Wizard thingy.

Actually and this time it is for sure for I have spent literally the past 2 days on the phone with data support at Cingular trying to get my blackberry connect software to work properly on the 850mhz version 9300 US Model bought from bm-custom on ebay- she really does have the real deal, 9300-b, pyara4, and they are releasing the phone FINALLY AFTER THE 1ST OF THE NEW YEAR. The rep's were not able to help me much for the info they had on the not yet released phone on their network was not much but nevertheless every one of the 6 rep's I spoke to confirmed this to me. One of them even asked where I bought mine for they had been wanting this phone since Sept when it was originally scheduled to be released. I was their guinea pig as it were for it was their 1st trouble shoot call with this phone and in many ways I am learning being an early adopter, I always get phones when they are released or before, it is not worth it if you run into issues with software etc. Being a Cingular customer for many years they were happy to try and help me with their limited resources on the phone yet in the end nothing was resolved. So for those of you who have been waiting more than patiently you will have your phone soon and my info is totally accurate.
FYI, Being the first ever phone in the US Market with Blackberry Connect software other than a B-Berry please expect to experience some issues for all of the bugs have not been worked out and after 4 hours the past 2 days on the phone with data support I still do not have my push email and am frustrated to say the least. A great device overall but if you want fast data access it really is very slow like numerous people have pointed out even with edge. Expect to wait patiently for websites to load and if it has alot of photos go get a cup of coffee or to the John for it will still be loading when you come back. I am not kidding here. Thanks, Kevin

I looked at buying a phone from bm-custom but I was afraid the 9300 would end up like the MPX 300 vapor ware without any support from Nokia. I will pay extra to get the phone without Cingular branding and if Cingular does release the phone I'll feel much better about buying one.

Can you see it from their stock pictures?

I've emailed them several times but they won't confirm if its 850 or 900 Mhz.

After 4 emails back and forth with Newegg I got the following response:

"We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. The item # N82E16875209011 should be 900/1800/1900 MHz, our product support department has updated the description to 900/1800/1900 MHz. Your patience and understanding regarding this issue is greatly appreciated."

Well I would first off like thank everyone for purchasing the 9300/850 from bm-custom. We have 2 left and 5 more coming in next week. These are the real deal. Thank you all for the support and feedback.

I'm interested to know how you have so many of these phones when no one has been able to find them available in the public retail anywhere.

can't really go there, but lets be happy I do.

I've spoken to people that have bought an 850 from him and it's real. I didn't because if Nokia scraps the phone it may end up like the MPX 300, it exists but Motorola doesn't support it and I don 't think there is any new firmware versions.
