i930 Using Phone As Modem How To???'s

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: atwageman

I'm trying to use my 930 as modem hooked up to my laptop but can seem to get it to work. I've installed the appropriate drivers but still no luck. I'm using Windows XP Pro. I thought I saw a thread the other day on this, but can't find it. Any step by step instructions on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

Start > accessories > modem link > activate

This is for USB connection.

I've done that prior to posting this thread, still no luck. Anybody out there have any luck with this. Thanks bud for your help though.

Same here,
I've installed the USB Modem several times, but it dosent show up and Connection Manager cannot see it or install it either.
I can see it as a selection to install a modem, but it will not go to the next step, because it wants to assign it a com port.
I've also tried to install the modem through Connection Manager, but it goes through the installation, but dosen't show in the list of devices.

I've done this many times.

1st. you need to have USB driver installed. This is the same USB driver for all Nextel phones. Make sure the driver is installed properly by connecting any old Nextel phones via USB and verify that the phone is enumerated correctly by going to device manager.

2nd. Activate i930 modem by going to modem link (do not press DONE softkey while the modem is active). Connect to USB cable and your phone should enumerate just like other Nextel phones.

Got it working and connected to Connection Manager (It has signal and all other info showing). I just won't connect to the internet.
If I go into Nextel Diagnostics, i have an Ip and DNS and all the other data, but no internet connection. It times out about 1 minute after clicking the connect button.

Put my sim in my wifes 710 and it works,
Must be another connection setting within WM that I'm missing
Did a speed test and got 25k DL.

I'm posting this message using i930 modem connection at 19.2Kbps.

I don't use Nextel Disagnostics or any Nextel program. However my settings are (network connections > iden phone):

OS => XP sp2
dial string => s=2
username/test => test / test
Networking (PPP settings) => all disabled

Posted by: Smittyjf

Got it, Posting this with it connected
Thanks.

For those who need instructions
Go to Network Settings> Create New Connection> Dial-UP

Username= test
password=test
confirm=test

Dial=s=2

Thanks

hey .. what kinda speeds do you guys get when using your phone as a modem? mine is slow as sin... 19.2 kbps :-(

Posted by: iNViOnE

im trying to set up a connection and when i go to network connections then dialup setup
it asks me for a phone# what do i enteR?

Posted by: kklick

Enter S=2 as the phone number. You can just leave the password and username blank.

Posted by: NATEHAWK

will this use your minutes or data?

Posted by: iNViOnE

nice... i got mine working and connecting at 57.6Kbps
same question as nate above me... does the modem use minutes or my unlimited data?

Posted by: kklick

Dang thats pretty good connection compared to my 19.2

Definitely need to figure out how to get up to that speed for sure.

Ok just talked to a tier 2 support rep and using your phone as a modem uses minutes of your cell time not data access.

They also said there is no way to change the connection speed.

iNViOnE was there anything you did different with settings or anything to get that speed? The tier 2 rep said that 19.2 was pretty good and the average was around 9.

the poster who is getting 57.6 is probably seeing the port speed from the phone to the computer, not the acutal phones connection speed to the tower.

Unless they've enabled WiDEN, in which case 50kbps+ speeds are quite likely.

Widen doesn't seem to affect the phone when connected as a modem. I can run a speed test on the phone and get 30 to 40 kbps on the phones internet. Close that out and set up the modem connection and it connects at 19.2 every single time. No change in that speed no matter where I connect from.

Now when using your phone as a modem it uses cell minutes not data time so even if you have unlimited data you may still experience some overage issues. When you are using the modem connection you are actually just dialing a number. Like I stated before when I talked to support they said there was no way to increase the connection speed with the modem connection. I find that hard to swallow but I've yet been able to get over 19.2

Posted by: NR_EMT_P

ok.. the way it was explained to me was this :

If you are using your phone as a wireless modem ( ie: dialing a regular 7 digit #) this WILL use your cell phone minutes. If you are using your phone and dialing the s=2 number, this connects you to the nextel data network, and at that point you are using your data package time. I have had the unlimited data plan for several months, and i use the data network often, (dialing s=2) and it never uses any cell minutes.. but only uses data package time.
The Baud rate is what determines how fast your phone and your computer talk to one another. the baud rate is defaulted at 19.2, but you can select a faster speed. This wont speed up your internet connection though, because your phone is only talking to the data network at 19.2
Hopefully this will clear things up a bit.

Unless you have enabled WiDEN. With WiDEN, your phone is using up to four base radios, and you can get up to 100Kbps. Of course, you need to use the packet network (s=2, see above) and not the circuit network.

I'm using the s=2 method and I still can't get over 19.2 even when I can get 40 on just the phone. Is there something that needs to be changed to get a better modem connection.

Posted by: Coulro DeSouth

You need to change the baud rate setting on both your phone and computer.
For the phone Start/Settings/Data Connections/Baud Rate/Automatic.
For the computer, assuming you have XP, it's Start/Control Panel/Phone and Modem Options/Modems Tab/Motorola iDEN USB Modem/Properties/Modem/Maximum Port Speed/115200 (wishful thinking).

Sorry I was posting from my phone earlier. I Have XP pro...all the lastest WinXP updates...I also have activesync 3.8 installed(disconnects when I activate the modem). I have the Mot USB driver. Whenever I try to connect, with all the right settings, It comes back with a different reason not to connect every time.
I also have Widen enabled and my phone is "decerted".

Posted by: kklick

What are the errors your getting. Can't help too much if we don't know the problem.

Posted by: TNTPierre

1st one is : Problem with the hardware,... then something about the port....to name a few...

Has anybody tried this to hook up to AOL?

I keep trying my phone with AOL but AOL will not detect it as a modem.

I have not tried the s=2 method though. Could somebody post all of the settings needed for that method?

Thanks,

-Brian

Posted by: KStrike155

OK finally got it working. I followed the directions on the first page (duh). Posting wirelessly on my laptop now.

Don't even need to go through AOL. I was under the impression that we needed to dial into a service provider, when in face the service provider is Nextel (using the s=2 method). This way I can bypass AOL altogether! I did a speed test on dslreports.com/mspeed and I'm getting 34KB/s with WiDen enabled (may not be in a WiDen area though... Bethel, CT, I'm usually near Boston). Excellent! This is so cool!

Can anyone confirm that this doesn't use minutes? I don't think it would because it's not actually a number you are dialing. Unlimited data plan is great!

-Brian

EDIT: By the way, I'm doing this using the infared port on my laptop and i930. Awesome!

Posted by: ke4qpf

Use the USB cradle... I'm bursting between 56 and 78kbps... make sure you have your dial-up settings on the PC opened all the way to 115,200 for the bursts to fully take effect. 34k is respectable for the IRCD port. However, it IS the SLOWEST port on your computer to be doing trasnfers with. I use nothing but the i930 for ISP service and the "s=2" does not charge you a dime so long as you have unlimited network access on your service plan.

Yeah, the only reason I was using the IR port is because I left my USB cable up at school near Boston. Really cool feature though. I'll have to try this with the cable and see if it makes a difference.

That's just the baud rate.

Go to dslreports.com/mspeed to check your true connection speed.

Hope this is not a dumb question So all you need is a i930? And can you use the USB cable that comes with the cradle. and all you need to do is connect the i930 USB cable to the laptop and your phone and use the setting s=2 ect. and this will allow you to go online threw your phone? Or is there more hardware you need that i'm missing here?

I would like to know this also.

Anyone?

Posted by: flipfone

yes thats it, plus the drivers mentioned in the 1st posts. my cable provider had an outage last week so i too used the 930 for a few hours to chat with my friends and check my email. really handy. also when too far away from the wifi i use it, like in the back yard...

Posted by: Csst

Got mine to work just fine the only problem i have now is that my speeds are not the greatest.i did what everyone is saying i change the Baud rate to the phpne and the PC and when connected it says connected at 115.2 and when going to DSL reports page is saysing 21kbits/sec is this a normal speed it just seems a bit slow i'm using the s=2 method. Also i have the unlimited internet plan for my phone that's all i need right this shouldn't cost me anything right?

Thanks for all your help so far.
