Sprite backup, confused

Hi guys, this is my first post. I am switching from my I500 to Mpx220 and all this Rom stuff is pretty confusing . Why do you have to make a backup of all your stuff using something like Sprite? Aren't the contacts safe in Outlook on your PC? Can't you pull your SD card out before a ROM update to make sure your data is safe? Or just transfer out your files to your PC then back to the phone after the update? I'm sorry if these are dumb question or they have been asked before. By the way this is a cool site.

Sprite backup is for the applications you have on your phone prior to doing a ROM upgrade. Yes contacts are safe on SIM card but anything on your phone that you loaded or paid for (ie: games, weather program etc.) will be lost when you upgrade ROM. if you backup with SPRITE and then upgrade to new ROM and then you can RESTORE with Sprite and get the phone back to its orginal state before the ROM upgrade.
Now SPRITE works good if you stay with American ROM's but if you to ASIAN ROM from US ROM SPRITE might not work right.

I never believed on the power of Sprite backup. Do it manually and get the way it was before...

-Export registries using Resco Add in Registry.. ( HKLM, HKCU, HKCR ) & save in PC
-List down all the programs installed on the phone memory
-Copy the whole folder /Storage/Windows/Start Menu
-Copy the whole folder /Storage/Application Data/Home
-backup Contacts/SMS using Jeyo Mobile Companion.

After a Master Reset or changing of ROM
-Install Apps youve just list down
-install resco registry and import HKCU, HKLM, HKCR
-install Tweaks2k2 and security unlock your phone.
-Paste all the contents of the "Home" folder youve just copied..( overwrite if it prompts)
-Delete the folder /Storage/Windows/Start Menu and replace with the one youve copied.
-restore Contacts and reboot.

Its just like a car, youll be lovin it more with a manual transmission rather than the automatic ones.

I guess I never liked 'manual transmission' vehicles. I'm all for automatic transmission. I use Sprite Backup each time I do an upgrade and it works fine for me even on the Asian roms. I'm using asian rom 3.46 right now and no unusual problems with sprite backup.
