Topic: The Better Gas Price Plan!

Message:
Please consider participating in this idea/endeavor;
we have nothing to lose and better gas prices to gain.
This plan will cost us zero dollars and virtually
zero effort.

THE BETTER GAS PRICE PLAN!

The Plan:
=========
We all switch to Sunoco to get our gas, period.
(Essentially, we boycot all other gas
stations/companies.)

The Result:
===========

Result #1:
----------
Whatever percentage of us actually "do" this plan,
that will be the percentage of business the other
oil companies will lose in revenue.
Just think of it. If just 1 in 10 of everyone in
Ontario were to switch, that would be 10% of
revenue/profits that the other oil companies
would lose. They will want that
business back, because that spells millions of
dollars already, and will most likely drop thier
prices to get it back. It's thier only
option really.

Result #2:
----------
Because Sunoco is the only Gas station using
Ethanol in thier gas, the emissions in Ontario
(or anywhere this plan is implemented) would
actually go down; therefore, the environment
would be quite thankful. Ethanol is a fuel
Sunoco mixes in with thier gas and is clean
burning, it does not produce any harmful emissions
and does not harm your vehicle in any way. In fact,
it's better for your vehicle as well.

[PLEASE NOTE: I do not work for or have anything
invested in Sunoco, I simply picked Sunoco as the
lesser of the evils out there to chose from as the
Ethanol thing is good for the environment.]

Conclusion:
===========
The only language the Oil Companies understand is
money. The only thing that motivates them in
anyway, especially in Canada is money.
We have no gov't offices or officers that have
any power over the oil companies so the only thing
that "controls" them is money.

If we come together and show them we
have the power to "turn the tables" and take money
from "their" pockets instead of the way it's always
been, them taking from "our" pockets, they WILL
take notice. They will HAVE to listen.
Why? Becuase if a small percentage of us actually
do this, that will be a consequence they will not
only feel in their wallets, but one they will be
extremely nervous about ingoring in case the plan
catches on and spreads. That would be disasterous
for them.

There are so many injustices out there; be it with
the government, the laws or finance etc. that we
are (or feel we are) powerless to change.
Many call us Canadians "apathetic."
I don't think this is true, we are just not in the
position to start, implement and/or finish any
"revolutions." Well, except one. This plan
we DO have the power to start, implement and finish.

Please send this to everyone you can think of!
It starts with only a few. If we all embrace
and practice this plan, we have nothing to lose,
and only better gas prices to gain!

it simply does not work...boycotts dont work for gas prices.

i still get 20 cents off per L from GM, when that goes, then back to Sunoco.

Same for Illinois, and this has gotta be the 24782358723rd time something like this has been posted.

Basically just change the gas station in the crosshair.

Hey if anyone wants 20cents off every litre of gas I saw this yesterday in one of the branches is this if you lock a minimum of $5000 into a GIC with TD they will give you 20cents off every litre of gas.

I sense some frustration amongst some of our American friends in this thread...allow me to attempt to explain...

We have a unique situation in Canada, where retail gasoline outlets are controlled by four major oilcos: Petro-Canada (a former Government crown corp), Esso (owned by Imperial Oil/ExxonMobil), Shell, and Sunoco. There are very few other major gas station operators (save for Husky, but primarily in Western Canada, and Canadian Tire, but only where there are CT stores), so many Canadians feel that boycotting a particular brand is actually possible (whether it is or isn't is up for debate). Ergo, competition isn't exactly fierce in Canada, and price-fixing amongst Shell/Esso/PetroCan is a common conspiracy theory amongst Canadians.

Unlike in the U.S., Canadians really don't have much of a choice. We don't get to choose from DiamondShamrock, or 7Elevens, or Texaco, Chevron, BP, Getty, 76, Phillips, Conoco, Citgo etc etc etc...

are you sure your canadian? I see 7 11's all the time with gas.. happy marts, superstore etc etc

now I only have one question for you.. what are you smoking?

Posted by: plastikman

sure, but how many? in london, ontario, for example there is one superstore staion, and one 711 station..the other is a petro-canada branded station with a 7-11 store attached...and in markham, for example, there are two or three canadian tires, but they're outnumbered 25 to 1, and there aren't any happy marts, superstores, etc etc as you put it...

you can't even begin to count the actual effect independents have on the sales at branded stores, because the effect is miniscule, if non-existant on a national, or even provincial level...

even in a large or mid-sized urban area, the effect is negated by the strong presence of the national chains...at woodbine and steeles, for example, there are TWO essos across the street from each other...the nearest alternate stations are another esso at steeles & leslie, and a sunoco at warden/steeles, and a petro-canada at woodbine & 14th aves...and i'm sure that this scenario plays itself out an inumerable amount of time in any urban centre...

so before you troll, know your role

americans really shouldnt talk why dont you live here then talk. In Canada the private retailers are very small and there are very few of them and once they become big they are bought out for example Futreshop which was bought out by Best Buy. And was saying that TD Canada Trust which is a bank will refund 20 cents off every litre of gas if you put in an initial GIC of $5000 or more. You guys have many deals over there with credit cards over here the only card with a discount is 0.02 cents off every litre with a pretro credit card. I think you have a couple for example your Citi bank one.

i really think the point boils down to few things:

1: Yes this is a chain letter kind of post
2: That being said, Canadians have MUCH to talk about when it comes to gas prices, especially when over HALF of our domestic petroleum resources are sent to the U.S. without any discernable relief in domestic gas prices. This is likely due to the lack of refining capability in Canada rather than free-market economics.
3: Many Canadians, including b_rad94, are ignorant to the market forces driving Canadian gas prices. It is unreasonable to expect three or four large independants, who buy gasoline from oilco-controlled refiners to under-sell in markets that are controlled by retail outlets franchised by those same major oilcos.
4. It is UNLIKELY that there is any collusion or price-fixing amongst those 4 major oilcos. However, one must wonder, sometimes...
5. DAMN STRAIGHT oil prices aren't dipping below $60/barrel, and 80 cents/litre...get used to it....
6. And PLEASE remember...we get taxed TRIPLE on our fuel. GST is charged, along with a Provincial Excise and a Federal Excise tax. Be SYMPATHETIC!!!

just buy a bunch of stock in your fav gas station: hurts less at the pumps when it's helping your investment
