Some confusion over TDMA & Messages etc

I am thinking, that some people may be being confused by the system known to older TDMA customers. With the previous AT&T TDMA/PCS service we could only receive & send emails/sms/voice mails while in the so called digital areas. In other words, we could use our phones to make a call in non, digital places, but we could not get or receive the digital stuff, messages etc. When we returned to a digital area all would work okay.
I live in NYC fully digital, as I drove down the I-95 I would lose digital very quickly. I would not receive messages again until I reach Florida (1000 miles away) a fully digital area. Voila, as I crossed the state line the phone would beep. Hope this helps.

Maybe a poor choice of words (Digital) on my part.
Maybe I should have said when the phone is not in the Purple areas on the coverage map. Known as the Home GSM/GPRS Area. My thinking is in the Purple all services working. In the green TDMA voice only. If you look at the map it states:
Purple all services available.
Green features available varies.
These 2 descriptions apply also to roaming GSM or roaming TDMA.
This info comes from the expanded voice coverage text messaging email & more brochure. Or viewable online.

Just my theory on why this is happening.
