How to use your VX8100 as a modem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Where there is a will there is away. After two incorrect cables and one very helpful dude I was finally able to use my vx8100 as a modem for my laptop. I can now connect anywhere my cell phone works from.

One thing I noticed, was that there was no single thread on how to set it up. Being a newbe to cell phone mods, setting this up became a pain in the neck. So once I did get it to work. I thought I would post a thread just to let any one else know how it worked and what to do.

Parts needed.

1x VX8100, Preferably with version 4 software installed. (I have no idea if this works with earlier or later versions but it is worth a try.)

1x USB cable. Now this is where it gets complicated. You need to get a STRAIGHT USB cable. NOT a USB to serial cable with that doodad in the middle. When doing a search for one make sure is a 2-in-1 cable. It will be able to charge your phone and transfer data simultaneously. THIS WILL NOT WORK THROUGH BLUE TOOTH!!!!
Searching for “usb vx8100 2in1” or “usb vx8100 2-in-1” on ebay will get you what you want. I highly suggest http://stores.ebay.com/eCity-Wireless or http://stores.ebay.com/itrimmings. Both stores carry what you need, are fast, and are honest. STAY AWAY FROM rpiwireless

1x computer with available USB 2.0 port. (I do not think this will work with USB 1.1 or 1.0 Go the system icon in the control panel and select the hardware tab. Press the “device manager” button and scroll down to the USB devices. Then look through those you should see a 1.1 or a 2.0 in one of the USB device names if 2.0 all set. If not, good luck.

1x set of drivers. The cdrom that both Itrimmings and ecitywireless will sell you have the drivers needed. If not, you can send me and PM and I will zip them up and send them to you. Just list your OS and email address.

Now, for the configuration of the cell phone. (Please note some of theses settings may be set this way already, please just verify each one.)

1. Make sure the phone is NOT plugged into the computer and is powered on.

2. Go to the “settings and tools” menu
3. Select PC Connection or press “9”
4. Select USB or press “1” (it should set the phone to USB with the message phone connection set.)

5. Press the “prw END” button to go back to the main screen.
6. Press the OK button to select the Menu button
7. Press “0” 7 times. (Once to bring up hidden service code screen, the other six 0’s for the password

8. Select Data or press “4”
9. Portmap(data) * USB cdc
10. Portmap(diag) *UART1
11. Diag Buad(UART) *115200
12. Cable dun mode *enable
13. BT dun mode *enable

Setup of the computer.

If you have XP:

1. Run the setup.exe from LG electronics (usually in the LG folder) [Please note that the drivers are unsigned so if you are running sp2 on XP it will ask you if you really want to install these drivers three or four times.]

2. Plug the USB cable into the phone and computer.
3. XP should detect 3 new devices. (One at a time)
4. If the “Found new hardware Wizard” asks to connect to the internet select “No, not this time” and press Next

5. Us the “Install the software automatically (recommended)” option
6. Next, Next, Next. Agree to what ever it says and then press finished. You will have to do that at least three times

7. REBOOT your computer. It may not do anything but it is still a good idea.

Verifying the install

1. Go to the control panel
2. Open system icon
3. Go to the hardware tab
4. Click on the device manager button
5. Scroll down to the modem listing and expand it by left clicking on the plus sign next to it.

6. You should see an LGE CDMA modem listed there.

Dialing out.

I have High speed and have had it for 5 years. Heck if known what software you use to dial out with. All you should have to do is change the device from the modem it is currently using to the LG CDMA modem. Just look for a tools or options or settings option if you use a special dialer.
If you use IE and do not need a special dialer from your ISP then set up a new connection from the connection tab of the Internet options under the tools menu.

so that should do it. once you get it set up you can surf the web at a blazing 115200 buad (lol) Have fun.

I would like to thank Willpall for all his help in getting me up and running. Thanks a ton dude!

I Got It To Recognize Everything And It Registers The Phone As A Cdma Modem From Lg And Whatnot, But When It Trys To Connect It Kicks Me Off Saying That I Have The Wrong User Name Or Password? I've Done This Before With My Old Audiovox 8900 And It Worked Great, But My New Lg 8100 Seams To Be Blocked From Internet Access For Some Reason??? Can Someone Help Me, Please!!!

if you are getting a login error related to user name and password then it is probably NOT your cell phone. it has to talk to the servers to get that message.

who do you use for an ISP?

So you can use your laptop anywhere? Do you get charged any extra fees?

Posted by: tmkn81

well, i know it's working for me now... cause that's how i'm on the net, lol. i went back and scoured the threads again and found what the problem was. it's kinda tricky, but not too difficult if you have a decent knowledge of computers and your not scared to modify your phone's registry. in the end all it took was to modify one of the HEX files on my phone to eliminate the newer part of the security that verizon has installed to keep us away from there pay services. and to answer the question of where it works... it works anywhere that your phone is in your home area (verizon tower). it doesn't work in your extended network ( when your phone says extended) and no there are no extra fees when done this way...just your minutes.

do you need a mobile web subscription to use your phone as a modem? I can't find a working IP address to get free WAP on my phone.. (pretty new to this)..
thanks

mobile web is verizons version of WAP ( wireless application protocol )

free wap, is not totaly free , it uses your minutes but bypassess the verizon servers

you have to edit the IP addresss to connect to a different server, BUT it does use your minutes

verizons $5 mobile web package does the same thing , it use your minutes, but it allows access thru verizons servers

if you buy Vcast at $15 a month you get Unlimited mobile web, anytime day or night NO minutes used , that is what i do. now that i have the 8100
