whats up with the newer built stores?

why did cingular pick up the idea of taking away seats and make reps stand up 24/7?

its a blue idea and i dont get the idea of standing up your entire shift.

hell even car salesmen get chairs. new stores of a cellphone place doesnt?

just food for thought......

LOL. Because Verizon corp stores don't have chairs. Come on now, when one does one thing the other always follows suit. For some reason the removal of a sit down environment lessens the professionalism of the stores.

They think that if you can't sit down, you will find more ways to keep busy (work).

The idea of sitting down was for the old days when there was hardly any traffic and it actually took a while to activate.

Any store still using chairs needs to be updated, not only is it unprofessional but kind of ghetto.

screw standing up. its one thing like at best buy cuz well yeah.

but standing around while theres noone at a time? stupid.

theres only so much you can do. no point in standing up the entire shift.

its far from unprofessional and ghetto.

if cingular wants me to go outside my physical store and begin hussling people like mall people do. ok fine tell me. ill go out there and promise them the entire world and only deliver a fraction of it.

but leave the damn chairs alone.

we've got chairs in all of our stores. they look professional - and the customers LOVE them. they like being able to sit at an inidividual desk, while i do THEIR activation. it makes them feel more involved in the process - and they feel more secure about giving the information needed to activate. i think the older layout with the individual desk pods and chairs is perfect. counters seperate customer from salesperson - bad. open space makes everything feel disorganized - bad. small desks with chairs for customer interfaction - good.

Lol. When we got our new kiosk a while ago, we were supposed to get rid of our chairs, but we have kept them, cause frankly, we work in Sam's Club, and you know how many old people come through there? We call them "The Phone Throne" i.e. "Here you go, ma'am, let me get you to fill this out, and you can have a seat right here on the Phone Throne." Customers love it, old people appreciate it, and when it's super-slow, you can bet my white backside is resting there as well. But not as much as we used to.

What do you mean? Every Best Buy I have gone to, I had to act like I was stealing something to get any attention.

exactly. When I worked for Voicestream back in the day we each had individual desks and it feels more personal. I agree maybe that sitting in stools while helping customers can be a little odd looking but individual desks is more professional. I think everyone deserves the chance to sit down once in a while during the slow season and if not for us, they need chairs for customers.

I'm sorry but I've seen how the legacy orange style is... and it's ghetto and unprofessional.

I still haven't gotten used to wearing polos yet... AT&T was full on business dress and no chairs what so ever. Though we did not have a opportunity to sit down in those days. We had waits of over 40 minutes for a person to speak to a rep in a fully staffed store with 8 terminals with 8 sales people.

Those days are long gone though... maybe the Holidays will pick it back up???

Then the reps steal the chairs to sit down so the customers have to remain standing.

its my understanding that the only way to get to use a chair at a corp store is to have a doctor's excuse (in writing). ie - one of the girls at my local blue store is pregnant and her manager told her to go get a doctor's note to say that she couldnt be on her feet all day. problem fixed. she now has her chair.

so all you have to do is figure out some excuse as to why you need a chair and then have your doctor go along with it. case closed...

yeah I have been working on the BLUe side so no chairs since I started adn I thought they were going to give us chairs not take them away from Orange... this sux... there is nothing worse than working a 12 hour shift on your feet all day...

If at&t had the money and a competent ceo I bet you they would have

I've noticed that if customers can sit down they'll take longer with you than if they're standing.

i worked at a blue store as an orange employee and we had chairs until our awesome director of sales decided he didn't want us to have them. no one was happy. now i'm at an indirect store i have my own desk with a big a$$ leather chair. and yes it very comfortable. customers enjoy being able to sit and talk go over contracts.

Posted by: Alfred_Neuman

how is sitting down unprofessional?

hell even car salesmen have a desk to sit down to do contracts, yet in cellular industry they cant?

ill never move to a blue store or a new store. i like my desk and chair thank you very much

Ghetto and unprofessional?

I go to a meeting with upper management wearing Armani suits -- they're sitting down at a desk.

I spend $xx,xxx on an automobile -- the salesman is sitting at a desk.

I go to my bank to get a mortgage, I'm sitting at a desk with a consultant.

I go to Mcdonalds to buy a happy meal, I stand on the other side of the counter while an underpaid zombie punches buttons on a computer.

Oh wait, now I get it.

True. They say "Would you like fries with that?" and we say "You would like fries with that."

like you said "you would like fires with that."

Sitting in a chair looks lazy and incompetent. Good sales people don't use chairs... you are constantly interacting and walking with the customer. Whether it is car sales or phone sales, real estate... you name it.

Lousy sales people hide behind a desk, kiosk, or terminal. Your transaction will take longer with a chair as the customer will sit there to ask you every question in the world.

If you are so lazy that you need to whine and complain about having a chair then you need a desk job because sales is not for you.

And yes corporate get chairs... they are not sales people. Orange people enjoy your chairs while you can... they'll be gone soon enough!

Posted by: ivwshane

If this was a real sales job I would say chairs would be ok but the fact remains, cingular store employees are retail employees and are comparable to any other retail outlet such as macys, best buy and so on. So I think not having chairs is fine and makes sense.

Having said that though, having chairs would add a little professionalism provided they are used properly, ie not being slumped over when not helping anyone.

Posted by: Soopafly

Not to mention the larger gut you're gonna get from sitting on your arse.

Posted by: Alfred_Neuman

so wait, corp reps cant get chairs yet agents can?

oh wait, no logic to that.

im getting more and more ticked off at this stupid gay at&t company.

ill simply sit on the counter if they force me to.

Posted by: kilowatt

i don't think the having no chairs is an orange or blue thing. seems like it just depends on your market. we had chairs at a blue store they got taken away, i transfered to an orange store in a different market and we had stools. they didn't have any plans of taking them away either.

Posted by: walkguru

before i retired i worked in construction, i could have used a chair, not.

Posted by: BellaDea

it is a market by market decision most of the time and as far as indirects, cingular has no say of how they run their business when it comes to employees sitting or not.

Posted by: johngotti

I have been in the agent side for some time now and we have always had a table w/chairs... bar stools at counter.. when a customer comes in I am not sitting down... but it helps when going over the CSS and contract to have a seat breifly at the table and go over things... I dont think we should be camping out in chairs all day but at the same time we should have seating available to use to our advantage...
