Please Help: Confused as newbie trying to get email on 7100t w/ hotmail...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: atwnsw

I have read through the stickies on the forum and am very lost.
I am trying to help my wife setup her 7100t to receive hotmail.

I have spoken to tmobile tech support and they say that it does not support hotmail.

I did read in this thread somewhere a few weeks ago that I can use hotmail with my blackberry. I believe the concept was to forward her hotmail emails to a new blackberry email address but am not sure.

If I understand correctly, the steps are:

Go to my tmobile website and create her account.
Create a new email address: YOURNAME@carrier.blackberry.net
Then forward all of her emails from hotmail to her new blackberry email address?

This sounds way to indirect/complicated.
Is there an easier way?
Did I skip a step?
Can it even be done?

We have been paying for tmobile internet service for 3 months and I still don't have it setup (my fault). I could really appreciate your assistance to knock this out once and for all.

I don't have the device so am not familiar with it but need to program it (she is clueless).

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks

Anthony

Wirelessly posted (Blackberry 7520.|: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry7100i/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/103)

First off, make sure you have a blackberry data plan, not just a regular data plan. Then, you need to create your blackberry email account--username@____.blackberry.net. From there, you can either set up polling of the gotmail account where the blackberry will check that account for new messages every 15 minutes, or you can forward email from the hotmail account to your blackberry account. that is the only way to get your hotmail on your blackberry.

Well, actually that isn't the ONLY way to get hotmail. The other way is to point your browser to mobile.msn.com and login using your passport. You can access hotmail that way as well, but it too is a pain. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that there is an annual fee to hotmail for this feature. It can't be much tho, since this is how I access my hotmail on my 7100t and I know I wouldn't pay a lot for this.

its not the blackberry that doesnt support hotmail... its TMOBILE that doesnt support hotmail/msn.... simple solution is to just create a yahoo account for her and integrate that into the blackberry

If you access hotmail using the browser, is it possible to reply through the web too? I was under the impression that you couldn't, hence I didn't mention that method.

The simple solution is to tell you that MSN or hotmail does not support POP3 access which they don't. Even with paying the 20 buck yearly fee they still don't support POP3. I don't think there is an option in hotmail to forward mail either. So basically hotmail is out with a blackberry. I'd suggest using a yahoo or gmail account.

Thats funny, cause I get all my hotmail on my bb using BWC polling....

Posted by: aristoBrat

Do you have a grandfathered Hotmail account?

I don't see a POP3 feature mentioned anywhere on Hotmail's site currently. How is BWC (BIS) polling accessing it?

Care to explain how? Cause I know that hotmail doesn't offer pop3 even with the premium service.

Posted by: martin_j001

Just put my hotmail username and password in BWC and voila!! My email arrives every 15 minutes if there is any!! And yes, I am paying the $20 per year for the "upgraded" account--this may (and probably does) have something to do with it....

Its an account that was started back in 1997 or so, so I'm really not sure. As for BWC, I've just entered my username and password....checks every 15 minutes....

Likewise I have had my Hotmail account for about 7 or 8 years now and I can just add it to my BIS and walla' I have Hotmail. I can not forward it though.

Does this mean that I have signed up for the wrong service?

Presently, I am signed up only for the Blackberry unlimited data plan which is $19.99 per year.

Should I cancel my existing service and add the following:

Blackberry unlimited w/ Enterprice Email add-on to be able to use hotmail w/ my bb for $29.98 per year?

^^Does the description of the service actually say that it specifically allows you to check hotmail? I kind of doubt that it would, and I'm not real sure whether or not any BES can pull from Hotmail--does anyone with BES experience know the answer to this?

From what I can tell, the problem is Hotmail, not your BlackBerry service (or data plan).

The BlackBerry Web Client (or BIS -- whatever it's called nowadays) can forward forward email from any account that supports POP3 or IMAP access. Except for older accounts, Hotmail doesn't appear to support POP3 or IMAP access. POP3/IMAP are the standards, so it sucks that that Hotmail doesn't appear to want to play fairly by enabling them.

I added hotmail via the webclient and I get the email sent to my blackberry.

Ok. I work for Rogers, and this is how it works for us. First of all, hotmail does not forward the e-mail. The web client checks your account every 15 minutes. If there is a new e-mail, it will check it again in 13 mins. Provided there is another new e-mail, the web client will check 2 mins faster each time, resetting itself to 15 mins if there are no new msgs. All the while, the web client is "pushing" any new e-mails in the inbox down to your Blackberry, (again, 2 mins faster provided there is somthing new in the inbox). That's right, your Blackberry doesn't actually check for e-mails, rather they are pushed down from the web client. So. This means that there is no problem with your Blackberry, and no need to pay anything extra for hotmail. The problem lies in your Blackberry Web Client.

Actually, I am pretty sure that pop polling of your hotmail does require the upgraded (paid) account, but I'm not positive on that--but it was true in my case.... When my "subscription" ended, I didn't get my email for a few days, until I upgraded my account again....

Posted by: OJ330i

This is the error message that BIS gives me when I try to add a hotmail account. I used to have the paid service but since yahoo and gmail offer such large accounts for free, the 20 bucks paid to MSN is a waste in my opinion.

Yahoo apparently offer "BES" like sync and forward with BB. And its free. I would go that route.

Posted by: NetGuyR

Really? I didnt know that. How does it work (yahoo sync, that is)?

Once again.... the people who get it to work, I notice in your profiles that you're not with tmobile... DOES ANYONE WHO POSTS THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO GET IT TO WORK WITH TMOBILE?????

Its not a blackberry issue... its just an issue with tmobile, cause you cant do hotmail on any other device through myemail on tmobile either to my knowledge

I saw this on the upgrade webpage at TMO. Apparently they've improved the integration with Yahoo. Not only does it forward (in real time--no 15 minute delay) mail, but Yahoo mail deleted on your bb is deleted in your Yahoo account. Check out TMO's website.

I wonder if TMO has "blocked" Hotmail? As it appears they've got some sort of alliance with Yahoo!?!

Yeah that is pretty much how it works. Its some deal that T Mobile has worked out with yahoo. If you look under you options for yahoo you won't find any mention of pop3(with the basic account), forward or blackberry anywhere. Its some deal worked out with yahoo and tmo. It works great for me though. You get push and sync with your yahoo account for free. Hotmail you have to pay $20 to get bigger than a 250mb account and even then you still don't get pop3 access, only the ability to download to an outlook or outlook express account and a larger account.

This may be true lately, but its not a blanket statement that applies to all Hotmail users thats for sure. As I stated earlier, I have pop access to my hotmail account, and so does Pink. In some cases, not all, Hotmail is still pop accessible....

Arrgh, this all sounds so familiar to me. I tried and tried to get this sorted out a few months ago. see link http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...ghlight=hotmail
Failed miserably. There is the grandfathered issue. There are at least 3 ways to have a hotmail account (regular small size, hotmail plus, msn premium and msn mobile). MSN mobile allows you to login to your email using the internet (I think WAP connection) and it takes FOREVER, not what a blackberry user wants. The Blackberry, tmo, and MSN folks all call these several account possibilities by slightly different names, again leading to confusion.

My suggestion is to get a free Yahoo (which syncs with BB wirelessly) email, or gmail (also good, with instant forwarding) and download a free email forwarder (like e-eeasy.com) to send your msn/hotmail emails to your BB friendly gmail or yahoo account. Trick is, there is always a trick, need to leave computer on for the free email forwarder to work. Eventually her contacts will catch on to her new email and then she won't even need that.

good luck
