I need a convergence device...

Sitting in SeaTac airport on Monday afternoon, I whip out my trusty, 13-month-old Palm Tungsten C to surf the Web only to discover the screen is busted from being tossed far too cavalierly into my Timbuk2 bag prior to leaving.

I could pay $125 to Palm to get the screen repaired. Or, I could get a business-class smart/PDA phone.

So, now my question, particularly with UMTS rolling out in my area in a matter of days, what the hell do I get now?

I'll tell you what I used my Palm for ... maintaining contact info for personal use as well as business associates; keeping track of business appointments; surfing the Web and checking e-mail; photo storage; playing solitaire

I am fairly concerned about being able to move my Palm contacts on my PC to a new device. Someone please tell me I can do this without having to buy a Treo. Let me make this quite clear: I do not want a Treo.

I've been considering the Nokia 6682, but as I said, a 3G phone is now a worthwhile option.

All suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Additionally, I am eligible for an upgrade Nov. 14 and price probably won't be an issue.
Thanks.

you will not have a 3G device option for quite a long while. Sorry

get the hp 6510, htc 8100

I would go with a symbian based phone. I'm not sure how you would transfer your palm contacts but I'm sure there is a way.

If you like palm, the treo is a good option as long as you update the software. I have one and after the second day I had to update the firmware and haven't had any problems since. Having said that, I still hate it. It's not a good phone and I don't like the palm OS (and I dislike windows based phones even more). Symbian is the only OS that provides a good phone interface while allowing me to use advanced apps for pda functionality.

One other option for you might be to buy a used nokia 6620 (currently my favorite) and use that till a good 3g phone comes out.

Quill, get the Samsung SGH-D307.

And I know of course....your a Samsung fan girl and all....It will suit you perfectly.

tutu, i'm pretty sure when quill mentioned wanting a convergence device, she didn't mean converging a typewriter and a phone.

Quill, here's what i think you could do if you went with the Nokia 6682 (which I would personally recommend snice i love mine still ater a month with it).

If you have a yahoo account, you can sync your palm desktop with Yahoo address book via Intellisync. I also think that once synced, intellisync will also sync with Outlook and outlook express. The nokia PC suite can then sync the phone with Outlook Express and/or outlook. Kinda convoluted, but it would work.

I believe this solution would also work for the Audiovox 5600, which comes highly recommended as well.

I think that Nokia is huge and as ugly as a slug. Only my opinion.

Why don't you just import some overseas UTMS phone? It will be awhile until Cingular has a wide range of them.

pretty sure overseas UTMS devices use a different band that the US band.

I figured that would be the case as far as a Cingular branded unit goes. I don't have to use my upgrade to get a new phone. I can wait until January when my husband is eligible for an upgrade, heck as long as his phone works, I don't need to upgrade either of us.

If the Samsung D307 could perform the PIM functions I want it to, I would consider it. I love the Nokia 6682. It's a bit more than I want to pay right now, but considering it would replace a $300 phone and a $400 PDA, it's certainly more cost effective. That would be a huge upgrade on both.

Mcurtiss, I do have a Yahoo account. I'll try the syncing thing. I really want to get those business contacts. It's my most frequently called numbers, but there's about 100 of them. I have personal contact info in Outlook, so I'm not too worried about that.

ivwshane, I'm also thinking that a Symbian phone is likely my best bet. I've played with WM handsets and they make me want to ralph. I'm totally over Palm. My sister bought me the Tungsten last year for my birthday and I was planning to replace it anyway with a S60 device, but my busted screen has moved up the timeline.

I'm at a point right now where if I buy another phone in the near future, it must have a better camera, so I'd rather spring for the 6682. My digital camera is dead as a doornail, too, dammit. But, that died of natural causes, unlike my Palm which came to a violent and untimely death.

Soooo ... yeah. I'm wide open to suggestions.

What about the BlackBerry 7100g? A coworker of mine just got it for T-Mobile (7100t) and I was surprised at the size. Pretty small. Plus you can view the real web and not just wap and get e-mail on it. Open Word, Excel, Powerpoint, PDF, pretty much anything.

I've considered the 7100g, but until all of RIM's patent infringement issues get worked out, I think I'm going to stay away from BB, especially since technically, no one should be selling BBs in the U.S. at the moment.
