Current W600 owners, is it really this bad?

Well...it it obvious that the reviewer did not like this phone. All I can say is, you can take his opinion or read back through this 1000 post thread. If you read back through, I think you'll get a completely different picture of the phone as related to sound quality.

my W600 has been mostly stable in the 3 weeks I've had it; it has crashed twice in the web browser while downloading things, but has worked fine otherwise.

Audio quality is fine for me, but I find the phone uncomfortable to talk on.

I just tried to make a call and it hit a white screen as soon as I hit the button to call from the phone book. First time it's happened outside of the browser...

Dang, the price on this thing is dropping like a mofo. I bought my girlfriend one within two weeks that my local store received them at full price with a hundred rebate. they hadn't even put it on display yet. Just looked it up on let's talk and the dang thing is free after rebate. After this and my own 6882 incident, I think it pays to wait two months after the phone is released before buying.

Hmm. Fuzzy audio...white screens of death...yikes. Well, mine is nearly two weeks old and I love this thing to death.
First, I have not encountered issues with crashing or with white screens of death. And I've been using the hell out of this thing.
Second, the audio quality is quite good. People tell me it sounds good, some are surprised to find I'm on a cell phone. I've been told that the speakerphone is good. It's loud, clear and highly functional. I still haven't tried to pair the phone with my BT headset.
I find talking on the phone closed for more than a few minutes is uncomfortable. Short convos with a closed phone is fine. Long convos I either use the speakerphone or I swivel the thing open and it's fine. I don't have very big hands, so it's actually a good size for me, personally.
Personally, I can not say enough good things about this phone. It does everything better than my RAZR, which is wonderful. I couldn't be happier.

i think i just got a white screen of death.

does anyone know how to make the sound be in the headset always by default when making a call with a bluetooth headset on? the sound is always on the phone, and i cant even transfer it to the heasdet until the call is connected.

...is it just me, or is that grey thing at the bottom of the w600i annoying? Especially when you're trying to connect it to a charger or a desk stand. It's always getting in the way, am so tempted to cut it off...

But, what if I have to send the phone back to Cingular - they'd probably charge me for cutting it off...

You can yank it out, actually. Mine came out on accident when I was plugging my car charger into the phone earlier this week. But, then I was able to pop it back in with some effort later that day.

If you don't want it in there, just tug it out and set it aside, like in the box with all the other stuff that came with the phone.

Just got my W600i today. So far so good. I'm lovin this phone. This phone is way better than Razr. I just uploaded a bunch of games and themes on my phone. 256MB is good enough for me since I only listen to recent songs. I'm sticking with orange faceplate hehe. I tried both blue and orange faceplates but orange stands out more. Waiting for bluetooth dongle so I can try the remote feature. The only sad thing about it is u can't upgrade/change firmware yet?

I emailed Sony asking why the w600i does not charge properly, and more importantly why it reboots after a "file sharing mode"...

This is there reply, and I quote:

When you purchased your W600i did you charge the phone before using it for a minimum of 4 hours? If you did not then the battery may have poor battery life and may not charge properly. When you are charging the phone you must use the charger that came with your phone, not the USB cable this cable is not designed to charged your phone.

The phone is designed to reboot after file transfer is complete to save the files on the phone. This is a normal feature of the phone.

Well, there we have it, direct from the horses mouth...

mine must be defective. it doesnt reboot.

iPod does the same thing after removing it from being connected to your computer.

Reboot? The only time iPods should reboot (normally) is after applying a firmware update. After a period of inactivity, they will shutdown, but that's different. Your iPod should not be rebooting.

As far as the W600i rebooting (or shutting down, not rebooting, as it does for many), I think that SE just got lazy with their firmware.

I ordered mines off premiere and havent had any real problems. Well it did freeze once when i was playing music had a java game minimized and then tried to go on the Net

well maybe i over did it just a little. I want to know if the next batch will have a differnet firmware like Motorola shipments do. Eventually we should all do a firmware check.

...what is the "proper" way on the w600i to EXIT the walkman or any application for that matter? Presently, if am playing music, and want to turn it off, I stop the track, then hold the "back arrow" button till am back at the main screen. Is this correct?

I'm so use to the Nokia (6682) interface, and I know on that mobile you can have multiple applications running. Now, if they are not closed properly, then you start to get memory errors etc, which is plausible...

I've owned a number of iPods and everytime I disconnect it from a computer (either firewire versions or USB versions) it restarts... you can tell that the iPod is restarting when you see the Apple logo appear.

Can someone comment on how good the keypad is for texting? I do quite a bit of texting, and the keypad on the S710 was awful. I have been unable to find a local store that has a display model of this phone to try it out.

Also, does this phone have the AOL Instant Messenger built in?

The keypad feels great, but it could be too responsive sometimes.

I just bought the 600i for my girlfriend as a Christmas gift. I am having a problem with the MP# player. When I view ont he phone by artist, some of the artists are listed twice, but the songs are divided between the 2. There are no song duplicates. The software (Disc2Phone) and the file manager both only show 1 artist. The duplicate is showing on the phone only. It happens with an artist that may have 6 songs, or an artist with 2 songs. I cant get it to purge or combine them. Anyone have this problem, and a solution?

i dont have anything like that. you say Disc2Phone only shows 1 artist and File Manager only shows 1 artist. that might be your problem. i'm guessing you put some songs on it by Disc2Phone and some by File Manager?

If it shows up in Disc2Phone, it shouldnt show up in File Manager and vice versa. Disc2Phone puts music in the "MP3" folder which you cant see through File Manager. so if you put music on there by File Manager its probably in sounds\artist\album\*.mp3 instead of sounds\MP3\artist\album\*.mp3

You can put songs into the "MP3" folder only by Disc2Phone or drag and drop through windows. When the phone is in file transfer mode, it shows up in windows (in 'My Computer') as "Removable Disc (F: )" (drive letter may vary). just navigate to f:\sounds\MP3 (through windows, NOT File Manager) and drag and drop. make sure you have the correct folder hierarchy: f:\sounds\MP3\artist\album\*.mp3

I dont even know why some people use the Disc2Phone software anyways considering you dont even need it because the phone does in fact show up as a removable drive in Windows. drag-n-drop is about as easy as easy gets.

This phone is kind of dumb in the sense that it has no extendable memory slot, and ONLY 256mb built-in, though i am sold on its quad-band. Looks funny for my taste though.

only 256MBs of internal memory? how many other phones only have 256MBs worth of memory w/o having to spend the extra $$$ on memory?

I've got God only knows how many MP3s, games and ringtones on my W600 and I still have over 100MBs of free space. needless to say that 256MBs should be plenty for most people.

by the way, why do you have a W600i for an avatar if the phone looks funny for your tastes?

One of the reasons the disc2phone takes long is becaue it alos compresses the file. Thats another reason why it comes in handy. I use it only for that and because it creates folders which makes it easier for searching through music.

ANd i still dont understand why people are still complaining about the memory. This is not suppose to be a top of the notch phone. Im pretty sure if it had an expandable memory slot we wouldnt see a price drop in along time like in the s710. i got the phone for 124.99 without rebates. No way this phone would have been that cheap without it. I for 1 am happy its 256mb no extra slot. Some of you want it all, then complain about price...

Just got a W600 this morning for Christmas. I have dozens of phones, so here's my first impressions:

The screen is dim, dull and has a smaller viewing angle in comparison to my k750. The w600 at 100% brightness is about that of my K750 at 60% brightness! TERRIBLE.

EDGE speeds are fantastic. I tethered to my powerbook and over bluetooth, I was getting much better throughput and response than my other GPRS or even EDGE phones. The E/G indicator is nice to have too, although EDGE is now national so it's almost pointless.

The keypad is decent, but better than the s710 is for sms. The 4-way controller is better than the K750/w800's joystick.

The incoming audio quality is loud and sounds very low in freq. K750 is a bit cleaner, but i'm not complaining.

The headphones that come with the phone are absolutely awesome. They fit perfectly and provide excellent bass response. In fact, i'd say they sound better than my Sony MDR-EX71's, but i'll have to compare later.

Ringtones are extremely loud. I would say TOO loud.

The new and improved web browser is much better, but viewing larger images is problematic as even with "smart-fit" off, the images are resized - sucks. Full screen mode is quite nice though. The memory on the new browser is also quite limited as it can't even render DRUDGE REPORT without giving a "webpage too large" error. lame.

The themes provided by Cingular on the phone are CRAP. what the hell are these?! I'm using all of mine from the k750/w800.

Menu speeds are (slightly) faster than the W800/K750.

The radio, while nice and featuring RDS, has terrible reception. Static on virtually every freq. Low sensitivity. Back to back with my K750 on marginal stations, the W600 is full of static. Major let down as the K750's radio has great reception.

Camera: well, you know. It's OK. SE killed it by putting in the CMOS sensor.

I found the slide-open sound effects to be interesting, but a bit annoying. Disabled it.

Overall, it seems to be a nice phone with a nice feature set and plenty of memory, but the screen is just too dim. Maybe I have a bad screen? Anyway, i'll keep the phone for the next few weeks and see if it's worth keeping.

All the music I put into the phone was done using the Disc2Phone. It did it again today. I loaded 2 songs by the same artist and it created 2 seperate artist folders on the phone, but it only shows 1 artist in the Disc2Phone app. It is driving me crazy. When I get home I will check to see if the songs are tagged differently to see if that is the reason for it creating 2 folders on the phone.

I had used directly drag and drop to transfer music to my v600 for about 2 weeks and today installed the Disc2phone and tried to use it, problem: the stupid thing says (in the available memory area) that I only have 71 mb

, i did "master reset" and now it says that i have 142 MB space available. Which is stupid cuz on the phone when i press one of the side buttons it says that I have 236 MB available, but the disc2phone and also the drag drop thing says the phone only had 142 MB space available. Please help, cuz I plan on putting lotsa songs for a trip and it won't disc2phone won't let me transfer since it says that now I only have 142 mb.

But how can it be? After I master reset the phone deletes everything contacts, data, songs and i even checked there were no songs left from previously so the phone must have at least 236 MB (tht's wht the max is on my handset after all the cingular and other stuff).

Also since i did this master reset I lost my contacts list, so i tried to download the "file manager" but it just shows this message "Error 1904.Module C:\Program Files\Sony Ericsson\Mobile2\Mobile Phone Monitor\ms98irsock_object.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2137220473. Contact your support personnel."

If someone can help pls, or else I'll prolly just have to call SE.

This is so frustrating. I even did a master "reset settings," hoping it would fix this error.

I tried that. Didnt work. I did a full master reset all and that finally worked, but now all of my pre-installed apps and games are gone. The Cingular firmware on this phone blows. I'll probably get rid of it within the week and wait for the 6282.

Keep in mind that all the pre-installed apps and games are demos. I was able to get all the apps from MEdia Net after I did a reset. Never tried for the games. But the apps were all there to download.

^Come on. Its kinda simple just plug in the first half of the head piece then go to more and select TURN ON SPEAKER. The radio will nto work with out the half the head peice because it works as an antenna.

Just got the w600 a few days ago but i havent had a chance to use any of the web features, since I am a little uncertain of the charges. In the box, there is an insert saying "30 days free Mobitv, Wcast...etc." Does that mean I can use the web features for free? I mean, is everything free (incl data) or just the access to these features. I also thought that you had to sign up for a medianet package to get it free for the first month. Any idea?

Yes, for Cingular you would need to have a data plan already. That is not free. MobiTv will give you 30 days to try their service. They charge you upfront, but if you cancel within 30 days, you'll be credited back the money.

On the w600 When i am using my bluetooth headset which is a Motorola HS850, When i want to voice dial, I press the button on the headset and wait for the tone and then I say the name. But no matter what I do, I can never find the name. I have already programmed all the names into the phone but they can never find each other....Voice dialing doesnt seem to work. Everything works great on my RAZR but on my w600 i get no luck!

I apologize, i didnt make my self clear, what I mean is the orange keypad lights and the front face key lights on the w600i are orange, just wondering if they can be changed to like a blue

...for some strange reason, after I did a hard reset on my w600i (just because I can, LOL) I no longer have Edge (E) running. Seems set to only GPRS (G). What gives?

I went into the internet settings, and there is an option to have:
GSM only
EDGE & GSM
Automatic.

It was default set to automatic, but Edge (E) would never show up. In addition tried Edge & GSM, still no Edge...

If I am not mistaken that shows the profile. Car for car, headset for headset, tree for outdoors, two people for meeting, and a building for office. Try changing your profile and see if the icon changes.

Cheekz, I have the same issue with my HS850. It won't recognize over BT. It will, however, recognize over the handsfree set or just through the phone itself.

Just bought the W600i and will be shipped to be Wednesday.
$149 no rebates. I have a premier account. I almost bought it from buy.com and would of made $100! Then I called and they mentioned wirefly. Oh great!. Wirefly is awesome if you buy a phone, pay your bill on time. The rep told me I would be charged $240 if I changed my plan in a few months. That sucks.
Hope to learn some tricks of trade on here. I only visit when I order a new phone.

There's a play/pause button for the mp3 player (and radio), there's the key lock botton, and there's the volume keys.

only 180 but you can slide it open from either side...it only slides back down the way you had to slide it up

I've had this phone for about 2 weeks and undoubtedly the RF is the best of any SE phone that I've owned. Just a tiny bit under some of my best Nokia's but still a great performer. I just love this phone.

The only negative so far is that the ear speaker is adjusted to all low frequencies (no treble) so the incoming voice sounds garbled. I use the speakerphone and bluetooth most of the time so it isn't really a problem but if I used that earpiece most of the time, it would be annoying.

Back to the RF, I think that SE overstates the signal strength bars on this phone. I was inside a building where I know that coverage is bad and the display said "Emergency Calls Only", and I barely had any connection, but my display held steady with 3 bars!! So even though they overstate the bars, I stand by my original statment that the RF is this phone is great!

The black does look quite nice, xbox360gamer. I got my white plates on Saturday and it looks awesome. I'm still waiting for my black ones. There's definitely a difference between the blue and the black...it looks like it has the same powder coat type paint finish as the white, whereas the navy blue is that plain rubbery material which absorbs light rather than reflects it.
Wish my digital camera wasn't dead. I need to just suck it up and go buy a new one so I can take decent pics. The RAZR takes crap photos. Grr.

my camera isnt nothing really special. its a Canon A80 4MP point-n-shoot camera. I just take the time in using a tripod so I can use the camera's manual settings which is the reason why my pics are always nice and clear.

the w800's are better. i believe the s710a and w800 (and some other SE phones) use a CCD image sensor vs a CMOS sensor in the w600i.

so the s710a and w800i pictures will look like a crappy digital camera (ie. really really good phone camera) and w600i pictures look like normal phone camera pictures.

Okay, I give up how do you access the radio??? I don't see any menu button to turn it on... Only thing I saw was that you can remap the play/pause button, which will make it play static but I can't change the channel or anything....

Also the menu is different then what SE has on their website phone demo. Both have 12 icons but their are some differences.

radio - you need the headphones to get signal, it's the antenna. but you can listen to it through the speakerphone

3) Not sure if there's a max resolution but it wouldn't hurt to try. I'm sure you can upload pictures to your w600i to use as wallpapers. If you're not sure where to put the pictures, just put them in the 'other' folder and move it to the picture folder in the phone.

Hi - Newbie to this forum. Got my Cingular W600i a few weeks ago and love it. I'm slowly working my way through this thread, but haven't found what I'm looking for yet. Does anyone have specific instructions, or a link to a thread with specific instructions, on how to download games to my PC, and then to my phone? I tried downloading a couple games from zedge, but the files I got had to be unzipped, and when I tried, nothing happened.

I'm close to being a dinosaur when it comes to portable entertainment devices. I'm amazed I figured out how to download mp3 songs onto the phone. So, the more detailed the instructions, the better.

the games should be in .jar files. you can transfer them into the "Other" folder with bluetooth (or the USB cable). then just go into "My Stuff" on the phone, navigate to "Other", highlight the game, and press "Install". it should install it and ask whether you want it to be in Applications or Games.

Thanks VTECaddict. The files I got were a .zip file. I've read a couple posts that say to change the file extension from .zip to .jar. Does that mean to just change the name? I tried that, but I got a message saying that by doing so I'd make the file unusuable.

Had a W600 for about week. Nice phone features and love the SE UI. Could never quite get used the thick of the phone and having the number keys so much lower than the function keys. Ended up taking it back and now using my RAZR again until I find something else...

I know there have been some posts about the W600 and BT handsfree devices. Just wanted to report that it works great with the Bluespoon AX2. Only hinky thing seems to be the volume control. Seems like full control over the volume does not get passed to the Bluespoon.

the w600 takes 3gp and mp4 videos. the video size cannot be wider than 172 pixels, not sure how tall it can be, but less than 220 for sure (ie, you cant have full screen video).

i encode MP3's at 96kbps. not too much degredation in sound quality but nearly half the size of 192kbps MP3's

I really plan to buy the SE W600i. I've read the full Howard review here and couples of the 77 pages of this thread too.

I did fully understand also that I need to have the headphones plug in order to have the FM radio to work... no problem at all, actually, this is what I want.

Now, for the provider... Rogers Wireless is the only one to carry the W600i in my area and I'm already with Rogers anyway, fine.

But, while surfing on the Rogers website, the W600i spec pages tell this:

thats correct. the W600i does not have a memory card slot. this however shouldnt be a problem for most users because the phone's 256MBs of internal memory is more than enough for the average user.

This is probably a really stupid question, but I have read the manual from cover to cover and searched hofo and have yet to find the answer:

I have a "u-turn" looking symbol on the screen of my new w600i. It is on the standby screen (along w/ the clock) and right beside the signal bars on the main screen. It looks kind of like a backward "J" with an arrow on the end.

I just switched over from T-Mobile and my Nokia, so I don’t know if this is a phone or provider thing.

Is there a way to PLAY files that you record using the W600i ?? I've tested recording a conversation, but the file will not play, "SEND" is the only option for the file, yet the manual states you should be able to PLAY the file. It does play files that are recorded when NOT using the phone line...

Also, any fix for the hyper sensitive mic on the phone? If you move the phone in your hands at all or push any buttons, the person on the other end of the line can hear every little motion and clicking sound! =(

Any way to record audio while the internal phone radio is playing?

I saw on another forum, a guy sent in the W600i phone TWICE to SE for them to enable the call recording function. They DIDN'T enable it either time. He got fed up so they sent him a FREE bluetooth headset for the trouble and claimed that they will have a firmware update on their site in the future, but no definite time frame on that... oh well.

Now that people have had the phone for several months, how is the swivel hinge holding up? is it still as tight as the first day, or is it wearing out?

I was trying a demo model at the store and it seemed a little loose when it was closed. it was one of those models with the fake screens though, so I don't know if i should trust it. It should be the real case though.

Mine is perfect since the first day. I have had it crash a few times and I am still in search of the original orange face plate but otherwise the phone is fantastic.

How do I transfer video files to w600?

You know what make this phone a big keeper? A Sony Memory stick slot. It would make it powerful as the w800!

to jugaaru.. 3gp files i think, or form of mp4 can be played at the w600. At the mean time, 3gp is mostly what you can play anyway.

What the hell. I cant even go a day without recharging the phone whats wrong with mines? I talk and use the MP3 thats it. I also have the display time setting on but i dont think that makes a difference. Should i return it for another one?

^I called Cingular they said i should try changing the battery first. I think im gonna do that and see the results. If not then im gonna get it changed with my insurance to another.

Is it possible to get the Up/Dowqn buttons on the right side of the phone to do anything else show phone information when not using the phone in an active converstion? I would have thought these buttons would have been great to use for increasing and decreassing the ringer volume, but no. It seem silly to only 'show phone information" for both those buttons... Are the reprogramable? Is the only way to increase/decrease the ringer volume is going into the profile itself and editing it?

Hey guys been DLing some games. quick question. I Dl games into my "other" folder install The .Jar into the games folder. after install can I delete the . jar file in the (other) folder or does the game actually need that File to run the game

So, um, a couple days ago my dog chewed on my phone. My white faceplates took the brunt of the attack, but there are a few toothmarks on the bottom part of the swivel. I've seen housing on ebay and I've got a set of electronics screwdrivers (when I would switch out the housing on my T616). But, has anybody replaced the housing/fascia yet? I've looked around on HoFo but not yet found a guide ... I'd rather replace the housing than lockline it. Sigh. I love this phone. It's now just the way I want it with themes and faceplates and ringers.
Thoughts?

ok So my second w600i died yesterday because of WSOD.
How do you guys get a 6682 from XBM in place of w600i , when i called them this morning they said they only replace it with the same make and model ?
any help or hits would be really appreciate. I really like the phone , but after 2 of them dieing i think it's time to move on.

i think after 3 replacements you can request a different phone

Ok So my mp3s disappeared and my phone shows only 40mb free on the phone status I'm going through all my pic files they are in tact only four pics I have no movie files how is this possible. I added a few mp3's now it is done too 27mb how can I have only 40 mb free with three installed games, 0 songs, four pictures taken with the cam. what do I do. Cingular branded no apps installed other then what phone came with

Has anyone noticed that when you transfer an album through Disc2Phone, the w600 lists the tracks in alphabetical order as opposed to the track order of the album? This is very annoying to me, does anyone know how to fix this?? Thanks.

ghetto fix:
change the ID3 tag for the MP3's so instead of just the trackname, it has tracknumber trackname.

for example, instead of:
Title: Perfect Situation
Artist: Weezer
Track: 02

you change the title so its like:
Title: 02 Perfect Situation
Artist: Weezer
Track: 02

annoying, but it works.

I managed to change my Nokia 6682 for a Sony w600i, then after a couple of months change back to a Nokia 6682.

Now, this was pure luck, only because I had the Nokia 6682 from the first day of release, and you know the problems with them, then...

After complaining, and complaining they changed the phone to the w600i. A couple of months later, cingular re-released the Nokia 6682 with the newer firmware, so, of course I wanted that mobile back. I went throught about 6 people at the exchange center, including supervisiors, and mangers to get the Nokia 6682. When it finally came, all they sent was the mobile, no battery, no back cover, no charger! I was so pissed, but it was pointless to call them again, and again. I called Nokia and bought the respective parts.

About a week after this, I found a link on here, Howard Forums, that showed you could do an exchange online. So, I did, and got a FULL kit, mobile, box, charger etc, within 24 hours!?!
