from the looks of things http://www.vkmobile.com/hqe/product...product_idx=320 the vk2000 is going to be an excellent phone with everything i'm looking for in a phone. i was wondering if anyone knew of any importers that might be able to get me this phone. or how i might go about purchasing one directly from china or korea?

Posted by: JDMpire

I just came across this phone tonight. I can't believe there is hardly no discussion at all about this phone here on hofo. I read somewhere that the carriers, whomever they are, should be getting this phone around december.

The china, korea market is scheduled first, then UK, then US. About the US part, that is probably just specualtion as I dont see any of the US carriers picking up a VK. As a matter of fact I have never heard of it before tonight, and Im a big cell phone buff and I especially like small and light phones, owning 2 gd55's

Get this, the phone is supposed to be an entry level model coming in around 100USD...!!!! If thats the case, which I HIGHLY doubt, I'll pick one up as a backup-secondary phone.

Posted by: bobbye123

can now be bought from ebay, just in case anyone is interested.

Posted by: TimJBart

and I've just found it on this portugese site. don't know if they ship internationally. Its only 160euros so it seems extortionate from ebay!

I just got one off ebay. I'll let you know when it comes.

This is a pretty interesting company. Reading the press releases on the website it appears that they have made some noise in the European market by signing a contract with France largest cell phone provider.

They also have four new models coming out as an upgrade to the VK2000. The VK2100 looks pretty good. I'm curious to see what the prices will come in at.

Posted by: Skaboy

Yeah, if i like this phone and it works well i will be getting the new vk2100

I purchesed it from GSM Portugal off eBay. It was fine. He is great guy and gave me a tracking number within 2 days of payment. I got it for cheaper when they where cheaper with him, they where 195 + $10 shipping. I guess he could not keep that price :-p.

Well there is a few flaws with the phone, for one you can't permanently change the text messaging mode, every time if you don’t want it in t9 mode or for it to type not in all caps you have to press a button.

The battery life could be much better, but what do you expect from that small a phone? I mean I use my phone a lot for a person who only uses it occasionally will get a good 3 day charge out of it. It seems I will only get a 2 day on every charge.

Some features are hard to find as they are not in categories that make much sense or are just differently organized then most phones.

Personally I love it! The size is just unbeatable. It’s a little bit larger than I thought originally but its great. All I use my phone for is talking and text messaging. This type of person is the one that will fit any person that needs this in a phone with no added features. To survive in the US market I believe they will need to change the way a lot of the phone is set up as well as improve the battery life in their new phones they just announced. I have to say I will be buying their new phone the 2100 when it comes out as I love small phones and with a 2 gig hard drive in a tiny phone, I cant wait. With their cheap prices and cool designs I believe as this new company learns the ropes of what to put in their new phones and how to make them organized, and continues to tweak their phones they will succeed with much ease. I think their new models are going to be one of the biggest tests on this company and we will see how they survive and improve their already cool phones.

My advice… don’t get it if are not ready to handle a phone from a new company that is still learning the ropes.

Hope this helps all.

Mac Ace GSM Portugal speaks English I forgot to mention that in my last post

Posted by: The Mac Ace

skaboy-you never answered the most important question-how does the reception compare to say that of a nokia, especially on the 1900 band

Posted by: Skaboy

Oh sorry, haha. From my view the reception on my Cingular service is pretty good. It has now dropped one call in a dead spot that my normal phone (razr) used to drop calls. I've only had it for 2 days so I can’t really answer that just yet with the experience I have had with it. Give me a few more days and ill let you know.

Posted by: The Mac Ace

ok, great!
thanks

Posted by: jehlinger

Picked up one off ebay as well. The size is unbelievable. Looks like I'm talking into a business card holder, LOL.

RF so far is comparable to many phones I've had or have now. Seems to have good volume and the screen is fairly legible. Bare minimum of features, I don't know if I'll ever be able to get a car charger for it, but still it's a great small phone on first impression.

Menus are a little goofy. I wish it had a speakerphone. It's quad-band in case anyone is confused. You can't tell by looking at some sites, but you can switch back and forth between 850/1900mhz and 900/1800mhz.

If I was on a budget I'd wait for the vk2100, as it will have more features including more memory.

Hopefully there will be accessories available eventually, as infosonics is their US-marketplace. I originally ordered one from them, but they cancelled saying they weren't going to carry it they were waiting for the next available, possibly the vk2050 or the vk2100, hopefully the vk2100...

Another note, the keypad numbers are fairly big for such a small phone. I've no trouble using them.

Posted by: vk2000owner

Can you explain how you can switch between 850/1900mhz and 900/1800mhz?

What's the menu path?

Thanks!

Posted by: jehlinger

The menu path to switch to US bands (850/1900mhz) is as follows:

Menu>3.Calls>2.Network-Services>6.Select-Band>850/1900mhz>OK (action key)

The phone has fairly good reception, although I’ve noticed an issue sometimes with tower hand-off. It seems if you try to make a call while in an area where it hands off to another tower, that the call will fail and it actually sort of soft-boots the radio. In other words the radio resets and you can’t make another call for a few seconds.

Other than that, it’s actually a fairly good phone, voice quality is good, people say I sound good on the other end etc. I’m hoping some accessories will be available in the near future. I actually took the charger and cut off the tip and wired it to a USB cable so that I could charge it in the car, and with a/c or USB.

Battery life definitely sucks, as it's a charge-it-every-night kind of phone. But being able to put it in your pocket or wallet is priceless!

I’m looking forward to the VK2010 which should be out the second qtr as it will have Bluetooth and 1gb memory for mp3s etc.

Posted by: Skaboy

The service seems to be not bad. It compares fine where i live(NJ). I can't wait for the new ones and am much awaiting the arrival of the new models.

Posted by: jehlinger

yes, the RF is pretty good. I've noticed my battery life has gotten a little better with a few full-charge-discharge cycles, now I get a little over a day standby and usually talk about 30 minutes a day.

GPRS is suprisingly quick even though it doesn't have EDGE.

If it had bluetooth it could be my everyday phone.

That's crazy! So if you talk for about hour a day you're going to have to chare it every night!? I really like the look of this phone but that just doesnt seem enough battery to me

Posted by: The Mac Ace

well too bad there arent really any accessories for it out yet like aftermarket batteries and desktop chargers that can charge multiple batteries at once.... that would make it quite appealing to me/. it was between the vk2000 and the 8801 for me, i went with the8801 due to the bluetooth and EDGE... otherwise, form factor wise, the vk2000 gets 5 stars!

Posted by: vk2000owner

Menu>3.Calls>2.Network-Services>6.Select-Band>850/1900mhz>OK (action key)

Option 6 does not exist on my VK2000. Is it on everyone elses phone? Does anyone know how I can switch bands on my phone? Is there some type of code/hack for this?

Thanks!

Posted by: yopines

I do not have THE Switch band option either. Can someone please help? Phone-Network Services- I have 5 menus and am missing the Switch Band one.

Posted by: jehlinger

You cannot see the 6th option (select band) when you enter network services. You have to scroll down with the center joystick button in order to see it.

Scroll through the 5 options back to the 1st. Hopefully you have the select-band option, you just can't see it initially when you enter the Network Services menu.

I got this phone today. I love it so far! Unfortunatly I am sick and can't go out to get an adapter to charge the phone so I can't play with it anymore until I do. Can anyone on here tell me the exact steps to change the settings so I can access media net? I am not looking for a free wap portal or anything. I pay for media net I just don't know how to set this phone up to access it. Thanks for any and all help!

Posted by: ippon

i was more impressed with this phone than i originally thought.
love the size, and hate the keytone.
keys felt good, battery cover bad bad bad.
but it looks like it really wasn't meant to me a primary phone.
considering the fact that the sim compartment is designed for easy removal of the simcard and its short battery life, it looks like a phone for someone who would carry it for a night out. for that purpose, i'll give it thumbs up.

Posted by: ippon

p.s. there is a store in downtown t.o. that carries for $299 canadian.

Posted by: Dang227

Where did everyone get theirs? I am looking on Ebay and the only ones I see are from Thailand. Thansk

Posted by: jehlinger

I bought mine from the Portegese guy "ruiloureiro", it takes about 7-10 days to get it (YMMV).

Posted by: Dang227

Can someone give me the Cingular wap settings for the phone? It will be here Wednesday. Thanks!

Posted by: Skaboy

Does anyone have any information on the VK2100 and VK2010 models. I would love to know when they plan to be introduced.

Posted by: squish37

Can anyone tell me how to set the settings for media net on this phone. I pay for it so I am not talking about free wap. I just don't know how to use it with this phone. Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Hello there , this is my first post here , I bot my vk2000 on ebay for 250 USD from ruiloureiro, location portugal , it took 7 days to get to me not including the week ends , and I didnt get a tracking number either ,but he did stay intouch with me via email , and his email responce was fast , when I first got the phone , I turned it on and I couldnt make a call it said no service , so I emailed him and he said the phone was prolly on band 900/1800 and he gave me directions on how to change it to 850/1900 and sure enuff it worked . and I recieved the phone in perfect condition , the box was never oppened , which I was glad I hate to buy something to find the box has been oppened and gone through ,thats complete with shipping and an extra battery and charger . a bit higher than some of you guys , o well what am I gunna do.when I got my phone it was on band 900/1800Mhz but I didnt no that at the time , ive learned that 900/1800 wont work at all in the US. so I had to email the person that I bot the phone from and this is how you change bands 850/1900 or 900/1800 is press menu top left button , press3 , press2, press 6 . select your band then press ok.. oh , I was wondering if the vk2000 comes in different bands the box that my phone came in said tri-band on it , and ive read on the internet that they came in dual-band to, any body have a vk2000 with any different than quad-band , just wondering ..ps shouldnt a quad band phone switch automaticly from band 850/1900 to 900/1800

vk2000 is mosdef quad.
vk made a mistake on the packaging by stating that it is a tri-band.

the thing is, the term, 'tri-band' has been long associated as being a world phone, that to this day, some companies use that term to describe so called world phones.

yea thats funny they call tri-band a world phone I think a world phone would be a quad-band phone , because in the US you also need the 850mhz to work , I think .

that's tight!!!! a quadband phone that small... wow! i have to get one of these for a friend that just wants a basic phone. How's the voice quality? anyone got reviews of this up?

voice quality is good IMO, could be a little louder, but all in all good sound quality and good reception.. I like the phone its small and light enuff to hardly , know that its my front shirt pocket. if it were a little lighter and smaller you wouldnt even know you had a phone in you pocket at all.. I know its not that big of a deal but dont phones usually change automaticly from band ao band , like from 850/1900mhz in the US and 900/1800mhz in Europe

Posted by: mossfunky

hay chunkyrice i noticed that you had on a list of phones you have is the k750 how does that work so cal thats where i live to , doesnt it lack the 850mhz ?it has 900/1800/1900 i think . damn i wanted to get the k750 to

Posted by: WirelessAndy

How is the color screen? I know it's not TFT, but is it at least comparable to a Samsung non-TFT screen like the x426, x427, x497, D357?

Or, kind of washed-out, nasty looking like the Motorola V180/V220?

Posted by: mossfunky

I would say the color screen is not so great, kind of washed out a bit , maybe like the v220

Posted by: KalJer

I was actually very impressed by the color screen, and the phone in general. It is in fact quadband, just to add another vote of confidence.

Posted by: jehlinger

V2020 is out, almost the same size, bluetooth added, OLED screen which should be brighter, plug 1gb storage for audio/video. Plays mp3s/AAC etc. I've got one on order hopefully I'll have it next week.

Posted by: mossfunky

hay jehlinger, can you tell me where you ordered your phone , was it online and how much was it . thanks

No. My VK2000 is definitely NOT a quad band. The menu option to select between the 2 sets of two bands is not available.

Does anyone know the fix for this?

Anyone have experience with wapzon.com? They have the VK2000 for $140-ish and the VK2020 for $285-ish, if I remember correctly, and both are in stock. I'm wary of it being a Malaysian company.

Also, anyone using their VK2000 with an old Cingular Blue (AT&T) SIM? Someone in another thread said their VK2000 would not work with a 64K SIM, only a 3G SIM, and I don't know what type AT&T used.

I ordered the VK2020 from wapzon for $285 with shipping. It's shipping today so hopefully I'll have it this week. Fedex shows delivery of Wednesday....hopefully that's right.

I'll post when I get it.

I think the guy on ebay is ordering from wapzon because mine is shipping the same day (today) as his are. He probably got a little better deal for ordering quantity.

Posted by: mossfunky

Hello jehlinger ,I just spoke to wapzon they said the vk2020 is a triband with 900/1800/1900 , if you live in the US you will need 850/1900 , for you fone to work the best , It will work fine in the city on 1900, but when you travel or it needs to switch freq 850 you might have a problem

Posted by: mossfunky

hay ~W~ , did you press menu the top left button then press 3 then press 2 then press 6 , you should see 850/1900Mhz or you can select 900/1800Mhz

I use T-mobile 1900mhz here, but I downloaded the french manual and translated the page where I saw a reference to bands, and I thought it said it was band switchable between 850//1900 and 900/1800. But I could've been confused....translations suck sometimes.

I guess I'll know shortly.

Posted by: jehlinger

Here's the original text from the manual in french:

Quote:
[Sélection de bande]

Mode Veille Appuyez sur 3 Appuyez sur 2 Appuyez sur 5
Mode Veille Appuyez sur 3 Appuyez sur 2 Appuyez sur 6

Google translation:

for what its worth...1900 band is STRONG...LIKE it is REALLY STRONG on the VK...makes me wonder how much RF or RADIATION is being put out on this lil sucka...

i have cingular and i need both 850 and 1900 but my t-mobile here isnt that strong...lord and behold, it GRABS that signal from t-mobile....incredible...

i too think its quab band despite what they tell you HOWEVER....supposedly there are two batches of the vk2000...those with just 900/1800/1900...how do i know? i ask one of the cell phone shops i goto and since they have some i ask them to check... they are hofo junkies too, and they verified it is only triband. I guess i got lucky for my vk2000. I hope you guys get lucky tooo!!

Posted by: raytrade

Jehlinger-

Totally let us know when you get the 2020 if it is quadband. I emailed the wapzon guys a few days ago to ask if it is, and also if the VK2000 or 2020 come with a U.S. compatible charger but they never responded.

I really look forward to your opinion of the 2020 when you get it as I can't decide between ordering the 2000 vs the 2020.

Posted by: ~W~

i can tell you this for sure...its not a US charger, but all you will need is to take your *ss hehe to home depot or ace hardware and get a plug converter..and you can use it.

Posted by: jehlinger

yep, no us charger, definitely need an adapter.

Or if you're brave and good at soldering, you might to and splice it to a usb cable like I did.....hehe works great and now I can use the cable with A/C-car USB adapter.

Posted by: ~W~

on your vk2000 were you able to download ringers or wallpapers?

No, couldn't find any wap site that would let me download them, they all said they were incomatible.

The VK2020 should have a usb cable so I should be able to with it.

Posted by: rag1247

just recd the 2000 and 2020 - am impressed with size. was also surprised that usb cable end different from standard mini usb cable - 2000 comes with european charger - just looked in 2020 box and it comes with a usb charging cable

Posted by: The Mac Ace

how does the 2020 compare size-wise with the 2000

Posted by: rag1247

2000 = 3 9/16 high x 1 7/8 wide
2020 = 3 11/16 wide by 1 5/8 wide

2000 = slightly thinner

Posted by: The Mac Ace

does the 2020 have 850mhz?

Posted by: ~W~

it has 850... C'mon Alex where you AT?!?!?@!

I think you mean the 2020 is the thinner one, right?

And both are the same depth, correct?

Say, it looks like the VK2020's biggest button is only a 4-way rocker. The VK2000 has a distinct center button inside the rocker, making it a proper 5-way. Am I right, or is it just not clear from the picture (thanks for them, BTW). Or, maybe it just has a dodgy 5-way like the 6230b's original faceplate.

you are correct the 2020 center 4 is 4 way

Hello, a newbie here, and hope you guys can help.
it seems some have successfully got wap working on the Vk2000.

I have a vk2010, but when trying to input the wap login names for standard cingular info, i can't input the entire login name WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM - only able to enter upto WAP@CINGULARGPRS , and the .com portion is too long and can't enter it further.

Can someone please help and confirm what settings they are inputting for Cingular wap/csd/gprs?

i've been going by the cingular data faq here..

Also, can i enter Bluetooth keys longer than 4 digits for my mac?

thanks in advance for your help!

Hi!

I bought a VK2000 in January and I'm mostly happy with it, except these:
1) My biggest problem is that about a month ago, I took the phone out from my pocket and there was a one-pixel-high horizontal line on my display. I started pressing the phone's side and it disappeared. Eversince, I have this problem (the line may be of different colors and most of the time, when I press its side it changes color and disappears only after several tries).
2)If I make a call, I can hear everything fine and loud, but the person, whom I'm talking to can hardly hear me and the sound is a bit distorted.
3)I cannot use the WAP browser at all. If I open a web page and want to press a link on it, nothing happens

These are my experiences. If you know any solution to the line on my display, please write (though I think it's a hardware error, that can only be fixed in a service).

PS: The game 'Bulbman' cannot be completed, since level 58 starts out with bulbman being stuck in the top left corner of the screen. Moreover, there are more blocks than free spaces. ))))
