mp3 ringtone for i870??

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: dcspride

I just received my i870 and made audio player(pm3) to work on the phone. Is there anyway to use one of these mp3 file as ring tone?? I searched it already and got nothing. Help me please.

Posted by: cellular_rep_9

yeah this is a good question, id like to know the answer also

Posted by: townreb

just load tones through jal

Posted by: vladi77

You can set mp3's as ringtones, but they must be saved onto the phone memory not to the transflash card.

Posted by: rkolec

so basically you have to make your own ringtones again cuz you dont

want to waste phone memory with a 5mb mp3 ringtone. it would be

easier if you could just set it as a ringtone and it would play however

long you have your phone set to ring.

Posted by: iMods

You can load WAV or Mp3 ringtones from an i860 file. I alos made i930 ringtones in STEREO and try loading them, but they went to the MEDIA center not the ringtone section using a jal loader. You can not use MP3's from TRANS Flash card as ringtones.

You can watch videos and movies in ".3gp" file on memory card using the media center to watch.

Posted by: dcspride

thanks for info guys....this really sucks... other phones such as sony ericsson can use mp3s in memory card as ringtone....how big of internal space do we have on our i870?

Posted by: sofocusman

I want to do my own ring tones what do I need to download on my pc?

Posted by: sofocusman

What do I need to do to make my own ringtones?

You need a audio wave editing program like Adobe Audition/Cool Edit, Soundforge, Goldwave, Audacity, etc. to make the ringtones. You need the program WebJAL to actually load the ringtones on to the phone. And you also need the data cable to connect your phone to your PC to upload the stuff.

Make sure the format is right.

Posted by: insane1

Does it have to be mono?

Posted by: Zercsi

This is crap. The mp3 ringtones have to be the same as the i860 ringtones format. So they still sound like junk. Yet I can play a full 192K mp3 and it sounds perfect. What was nextel thinking on this one?

Posted by: insane1

The crappy ringtone quality . Imma just keep my phone on vibrate.. heh..

Posted by: prostreetcamaro

8bit 8,000hz wav files sound great on my 870. If anybody wants a sample of my files just im me on aim z28camaro20

Properly encoded MP3 ringers sound better. I've noticed especially with my hip-hop/rap ringtones. On some, I couldn't tell the difference, but on others, certain frequencies were horribly distorted in .wav format.

Posted by: JiGGaFan

Yeah you GOTTA go with mp3 ringers...

If you could load above 8000hz i would agree with this.

Posted by: etzel90

are you guys serious? thats one of the main reason i got this phone. Im gonna mess around with this for a bit.

Posted by: NEXQUIN

So the answer to the question at hand about loading ringtones on the 870 is a NO correct.

Posted by: Zercsi

Ive been using cool edit pro and its all I use to encode mp3's that I usualy make on my own. So far I have not been able to get anything past the limits of the i860. The same ringtone when played on the i860 and the 870 sound identical. I guess that isnt such a big deal now that I think of it. It could have been alot worse. But what gets me is the fact that the phone can play hq mp3's.

Nextel

Posted by: etzel90

yea i use cool edit pro as well. Nothing will work besides 8bit mono just like the i860. Kinda disappointed, but whatever its only a ringtone.

Posted by: Zercsi

I have a small update. Dunno if anyone has been able to get past the limits yet but so Far I have gotten an mp3 onto the phone as a ringer encoded here:

Max Bandwidth 6000 HZ

Bit Rate: 64 KPS

Sample Rate : 12000 HZ

That beats the i860 by a long shot. I got some errors when going anything past that but im messing with it to see if I can get anything better. So far its looking good. Problems im running into is assigning the ringer. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.

Posted by: etzel90

really? is this still mono? ill try it right now.

Posted by: Zercsi

Sorry to those that have tried it so far.

Webjal will upload the files without the communication error that you would get if using the i860. Which is what I was going on assuming that the ringtone would work. However nextel has prevented anyone from assigning mp3's to ringtones that are any better quality that those with the i860. So basicaly we are in the same boat. The phone is more than capable of playing the mp3's, webjal will take them just fine, but motorola has locked us out of being able to assign them to ring tones. The best I could assign is 64 KPS. One thing I did notice is that the speaker doesnt crack like the i860 speaker did at the same volume. Obviously phone is better at that.

So if we can find a way around nextels little lock on ringers, then it should be no problem. In other words you wont need webjal for mp3 ringtones. Just make sure they are the same quality as the i860, copy them to the card, then copy to the phone. To those that are having problem with webjal

Sorry guys.

Posted by: etzel90

i tried going up to 64 kps but i can only play the file through media center, it wont show up under ringtones. 48 is the best i can do.

Posted by: panaph0bic

we need someone with the newest RSS to see if they can somehow edit it to bypass that. If i could put high quality ringtones on the phone, it would be the beset phone ever

Posted by: etzel90

I went in RSS and didnt see anything about it. But im not too familar with RSS except for the basics.

Posted by: Zercsi

I have been able to get up to 64 KPS. Thats the best I can do. Damn disapointing. At least we know its possible, just have to find a way around the limiting software.

Posted by: panaph0bic

you can load mp3's in any quality/bitrate onto the phone, but the software will limit it to media center. Just create a ringtone with good quality - 192kbps or whatever. Then, load it into the audio folder on your transflash/memory card. Then, on the phone, go to the file, and hit MENU and go to 'MOVE TO PHONE'. It'll move, but its still being limited by the software.

If someone can bypass the limiting software somehow, we wont even need webjal to load ringtones - it can be done by doing what i stated above - just dragging them onto the memory card, then in the phone, moving it from the card to the phone itself.

wat program are you using? im using goldwave and i can only choose 8000hz or higher...and is this MONO? or STEREO?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

oh yea panaph0bic i've tried doing this with the ringtones that i made for my 860...the phone still wont recognize it as a ringtone...you have to use webjal to load it for it to be used as a ringtone

Posted by: BadBoy22

I pray somebody can hack the limiting software, the 8000mh mp3's just aren't doing it for me. Then again anything over that won't work thru bluetooth.

Posted by: desird97

Kind of off topic here but why can i only see a couple of the songs i transfered from my pc to the trans flash card. I loaded 6 songs on the card but only 4 show up on the phone. I took the card out and put it back into the reader connected to my pc and all 6 songs are there. Any thoughts on this.

Also, any idea how to make these play over the bluetooth headset instead of the speaker?

One more thing, every time i take the card out of the phone it tells me I removed it wrong. What is the proper way to remove it?

Thanks for the help.

Posted by: valenciag

They wont show up if the filename is too long so on the pc shorten it.

Posted by: desird97

I did shorten it. I was just doing some research and the 2 songs i am missing are above 192 bit rate. i downloaded audacity and tried to edit the songs but that didn't go to well. Also in the phone it says that to use the bluetooth headset the files have to be 8000 mhz.

Posted by: bu00ha

u go to settings....advance...memory card...remove memory card.....its a hassle i kno

Posted by: kashabrown

I have been playing with this also with soundforge - I have run into the same problem - it would be nice to have the higher sampling rate - etc....

BTW - WHAT is RSS???

I tried these settings, both in mono and stereo. No go, not showing up as ringtones Not sure what's wrong.

Posted by: sonnyboy

ok can anyone tell me if mp3 ringtones for the i870 is different than the ones for i860, is there a different rate that can be used? because the same mp3 ringtones that i had on my i860, when i put them on my i870, they arent as loud and they sound kinda crappy.

Posted by: xplod4203

i've tryed those setting, loads to the 870 with no problem but it does not shows up in the rington section. but plays fine in the media center.

I called iDEN Support at 800-499-6477 and they said the best is 48 Kbps, for assigning ringtones...don't know how someone got 64 K to work.

Tried 48k, not showing up as a ringtone either. Of course, I can access the file in the media center. Just can't assign as ringtone. What settings are you using?

Also called that number. They were telling me something on how the MP3 had to be certified... not sure if that was completely true, though, that'd explain things...

Posted by: IMROME

this is what ive learned with dealing with the 870. i tried to put 10 songs on it and only 2 would show up. since the other 8 were cda format and some other format i had to reformat those songs. the program that came with the 870, the roxio disk, converted the songs when i saved them from cd to my hard drive. i hope that can help somewhat. maybe theres a converter for songs already on your harddrive

Well, that's fine and all, but the method you just spoke of is in regards to being able to play back an mp3 file on the phone. No problems with that, it's just that we're having trouble getting the 870 to be able to assign any type of mp3 as ringtones (or at least none of the suggested methods are working for me).

You mean people cant get mp3's to play as ringtones? Its pretty easy. If everybody wants a tutorial just let me know and I will post up an easy to understand and follow tutorial. I currently have 6 MP3 ringtones on my 870. I can tell you this, they sound soooooo much better than .wav tones thats for sure!

Here is an mp3 tone I made that works just fine as do all my others. So everybody try it out and see what you think. If you like it then I will tell everybody how to do it.

http://home.comcast.net/~prostreetcamaro/SES.mp3

Also I notice everybody complaining that it wont play anything higher than 8,000hz and it wont play stereo. Well guess what? The speaker CANT play stereo so it makes no difference. My mp3 ringtones sound exactly the same as the high quality mp3's that I have on my flash card. so whats the big deal here guys? Seriously.

Posted by: jygsaw

Ah, okay, I noticed you were using 8khz as opposed to the suggested 12khz. That got the mp3 working for me as a ringtone.

Additionally, I don't think the concern here is people playing their ringtones in stereo, but they would like it if they could play back at a higher quality. The difference over the phone speaker is noticeable.

Again though, thanks! Oh, and great ringtone. Almost forgot about that song. Still love it, heh heh.

Posted by: prostreetcamaro

Ok guys here is what you do.

1. Get yourself a copy of Adobe audition

2. Install and open audition.

3. Go to file in upper right hand corner then navigate to your mp3 files and choose the one you want.

4. Select the section of the song you want useing the mouse. Just left click and drag to your desired end point and let go.

5. Right click on your selection and click "copy to new"

6. Now hit F11 and choose sample rate 8000, then click mono then 32 bit resolution then click OK

7. Now go up to file and click save as. Once that window is open click on options.

8. Go down to where you see CBR BitRate and put in 48 and click ok.

9. You will still have a save as screen open. In the bottom left of that screen uncheck "save extra non audio information"

10. Choose where you want to save the file and rename it something short. (I forget the limit of characters) Then click save.

There you have it. A pretty good quality mp3 that will play on your 870 as a ringtone!

I hope this step by step directions will help somebody with there quest to make mp3 ringtones for there i870.

Webjal. It may work if you load it via TF card then transfer it to the internal memory of the phone. I havent given that a try yet.

Sorry, I haven't tried it yet...just reporting what I've heard regarding mp3's. I've been using wav's and using my old settings, as they sound good enough to me! Who knows, maybe a "certified" mp3, whatever that may be, would fix the problem and allow us to assign the highest bitrate as ringtones. That would be cool, but what the heck is a "certified" mp3?

Tried this method with some 8kHz / 48kbps / Mono and it didn't work. I don't think it's possible to load the ringtones from the TFlash card. Going to try the same files through WebJAL to make sure that's it.

I made an mp3 ringtone. 8000hz 16 bit. Itried loading it onto the 870 through webjal, but webjal only gives me the option of loading midi files. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for your help.

first of all your ringtone is in the wrong format, second have you tryed hitting the drop down menu? and ohh yea try actally connecting your phone to the webjal.

what you are doing wrong is simple, you are not utlizing the search button. problem solved, i would say done.l but i guess i can say, "yes you can"
sorry, i had to. just drag down the tab and it should open other options, make sure the phone is connected and you are logged in.

whats the best settings to get the best quality ringtones? 8000hz mono 32bit? there has to be a way to get the crisp sounding ringtones of the 930... i hella like my 870... but the 930 ringtones make me want my 930... i knwo its just ringtones... but man... you feel me?

Posted by: Zercsi

Im trying to figure out how I got a 64 kps file to assign as ringer. I dont know if its a fluke or what but so far only one file has worked. Im affriad if I remove it from the phone it wont let me load another like it, seeing as though its only worked once.

In order for a ringtone to work in the first place you must convert it to mono. It will NOT work in stereo and will only show up in the media player.

For mp3 music that I listen to I convert any stereo file down to a mono file to save some space since it sounds the same either way.

It is quite obvious that the ringtone software is limiting the quality of the assignable ringtone. I hope that someone can find a way to get around this as the phone is no doubt capable of much much more.

Okay.

First I connected the usb cable to my phone Then I opened webjal and logged in. Then I pushed connect to the phone. I did try the drop down
menu it will only allow me to choose midi files hence the webjal that I have will only allow me to put a ringtone on my phone if it is in midi format. After trying to load it from the transflash card and webjal I did a hofo search
which is how I found this thread.

my ringtones work just fine but then again I had to go to a nextel store to load them from my cd to a computer.

Another thing webjal is telling me that i dont have the usb drive to use it help me please.

I have now been able to get 64Kps ringtones to work with the phone. I tried a 5 second ringtone and a 45 second ringtone and both would assign as a ringer.

I am using cool edit pro to make the ringtones

im using cool edit pro too and i cant get them to assign as a ringer...

i clip the song..

press f11

Change it to 8000hz Mono 32 Bit...

Save as... Changed the CBR Bit Rate to 64Kbps
sample rate still 8000 hz

do i need to change the maximum bandwith.. cause its at 4000hz

also do i select any of these:

Set 'private' bit
Set 'copywright' bit
Set 'original' bit?

Posted by: PeeJayek

oh yeah... im not using any type of jal... im just puttin it on the card then transfering it to the phone... could that be a problem?

Ive posted an image of everything on my cool edit pro just before I save the file.

To test I saved the file you see on the screen and uploaded it to the phone using webjal. It worked just fine. So you can see that it does work.

thanks for the help.. i saved mine just like yours was pictured, but i still cant do it... i dont know whats wrong... the only thing i can think of is that im not using webjal to load it... im transfering it from the card to the phone...

i cant get webjal to open... i loaded it off harrythompson.com... it use to work... but when i try and open it it says something like it cant find the server or some ****... i deleted it and reinstalled it and still got the same error...

Posted by: Zercsi

For one and formost. You wont really notice any difference in quality of the ringtone between 48 and 64. The fact is that the frequencies are cut off at the same point in both instances. You might notice it with a high quality home theater system but from your phones little speaker.... no. What is killing the ring tone is the sample rate. When I raised the sample rate from 8000hz to 11500hz it made a huge difference in quality. So again I say that we need to find a way around the software that is limiting the quality of the ringtone because the phone will obviously play high quality mp3's with out issue.

As far as webjal I still use the patchers edition of webjal which works flawlessly. I got it from mobiledudes.com way back when it still was around. I dont know where to get another copy of patchers webjal. I would like to know though cause I need to get the patch again as I have lost it. But my webjal is still patched.

For someone who has gotten a mp3 to work on their phone, could you try out this mp3? For some reason I can't get it to work, even though I am pretty sure I have followed all of the directions.

The ringtones i make sound just as good as when I play the mp3 player through the speaker so I dunno what you expect. There is no way the 860 sounds any better unless you did something wrong.

Posted by: xplod4203

you can not make mp3's that are on your sd card as an ringtone. you put them in proper format with Roxio. the format is posted on the site. try searching.

Posted by: sweetcross

jus like ludacrisca sed can someone lay down how it is done? and can we get some strate answers not maybe, yes, no etc etc.

Posted by: xplod4203

What is it you do not understand? mp'3 can be in many different formats. those mp3's that you put on your phone and want to listed in you mp3 player, can not be assinged as a ringtone. the only mp'3 that you can assign as a ringtone are loaded on to the phone with webjal. The proper format for a mp3 ringtone as follows. mp3= Maximum Bandwidth 4000hz, bitrate 32/48kbps,Sample rate 8000hz mono
Wav= 8000, 8bit, mono, PCM wave file

This is all posted in the Sticky at the top of the page. Try reading it.

Im Ready To Buy The Data Cable From This Dude But Doesent Comes With Software? Do I Need It? Or I Can Do It With Just The Cable?

Posted by: Rellz

iight..i got it all down pat...i know how to do it...but what setting plays the loudest and clearest ringers thats close to the mp3 player quality

Posted by: Zercsi

Just read some of the previous posts. It will explain what all to do to get the best possible quality ot of your ringers.

You need the data cable, some audio editing program (Like Cool Edit) and you can either use webjal or transfer the files using your card.

Its fairly easy to do.

[QUOTE=iMods]You can load WAV or Mp3 ringtones from an i860 file. I alos made i930 ringtones in STEREO and try loading them, but they went to the MEDIA center not the ringtone section using a jal loader. /QUOTE]

Is there any way to get around this, to make those MP3's play for ringtones. I'm not talking about through the Transflash card, I'm just talking about through a jal loader. I tried the same thing, but it went to media center and it doesn't give you the option to make it as a ringtone.

The i870 comes with a program called roxio can't you make ringtones with that?

Alert!!! Alert!!! Check me!!!

Anyway ya I got a question. I want to know if you can make a ringtone into a higher bandwidth than 32 or 48kbps, 8mhz, mono with mp3's? I have tried to make the bandwidth to like 96kbps, 16mhz, stero and it just goes to the media center and I'm not able to make it as a ringer.

Is there any possible way to get higher bandwidth (better sounding) MP3 ringtones? I like that it does have an MP3 player feature but it is worthless to me if there is no way I can get a nice sounding ringtone u feel me?

Anyway, holla back with some info. Don't post no bs because I'm strictly about business.

What this whole thread is about -_-

Anyways, to answer your question..
No, no one has cracked the Motorola instructions yet or found a way to wrap a file in DRM that the i870 will recognize.

He was telling you that you just have to search and stop posting for easy answers!

Just use dbPowerAmp to change the bandwidth of the MP3's and just drag and click them over to the folders on the SD card. Its that simple.

And no, you can't play them as ringtones as of yet!!

I am sick of not being able to listen to ringtones on my i870 and have them sound as good as they did on the 860!! $300 for a piece of sh**! I have one last resort, we need to ALL file complaints to Motorola about the software issue of the sampling rate being no higher than 8000 khz and see if they can come out with a software update. And if they don't F*ck 'em!

I do disagree with you on ringers sounding better on the i860. I have to say that if you compared ringers that has the same bandwidth between the i870 and i860, the i870 would win.

However, I do agree with you on the fact that Motorola or Nextel should release some type of patch or software update that lets you have the same MP3 quality for ringtones as you do with the built in MP3 player.

Okay Im Starting To Hate This Phone... I Alrready Put Mp3 Files In My Phone And It Work But I Got Sick Of Them Delete Them And Want To Put New Ones... I Try Doing It From Drag To Disc And Didnt Work So I Just Tried With A Original Cd I Instert The Tf Card In The Adaptor And In To The Usb And Then Open Clasic Creator And Put The Original Cd And Then Just All Normal Copy Tracks From Audio Cd But ( I Alrready Did Tools/ Options/ Etc ) When I Press Copy It Copy Really Fast Dont Even Show 1% Or 40% No Just Start Anc Complete All The Cd In Like 5 Seconds And I Put It In My Phone And There Is No Audio Files.... Someone Patient That Can Tell Me What Em I Doing Wrong?

Posted by: xplod4203

the phone is fine your doing it wrong. first of all you can not drag strait from the cd. you have to format mp3 to a proper format that is stated in you manual. then save it to your desktop or music folder. and then drag then to an audio folder. sometimes they don't show up. two reasons why. first the name of the song to long, second it didn't reincode properly. so just reincode it again and drag them to the folder. and you might want to do a firmware upgrade.

Posted by: prostreetcamaro

Ok guys here is what you do.

1. Get yourself a copy of Adobe audition

2. Install and open audition.

3. Go to file in upper left hand corner then navigate to your mp3 files and choose the one you want.

I hope this step by step directions will help somebody with there quest to make mp3 ringtones for there i870.

i know from experience that mp3 songs wont play through a bt capable car unless it is the same quality as a ringtone which is 8000 8 mono. but an fm transmitter may be the answer if you find the right one. maybe at radioshack.

Here is how I got mine to work.

1. Open the mp3 in Cool Edit Pro.
2. Then go to "File-Save As".
3. Click "Options" in the lower right-next to "Help".
4. Make sure "Convert to Mono" is checked.
5. In "Maximum Bandwidth" type 4000
6. In "CBR Bitrate" type 64
7. In "Sample Rate" type or select 8000 Hz
8. You can save the Preset by going to "Add" at the top.
9. Click OK and save the file.

You must have a different Version of Cool Edit Pro since the one I downloaded doesn't really let me do it the way you have described, either that or I just need to go and get the crack.

It seems pretty obvious that the reason they have made it so difficult for us to clip some part of an mp3 is because they would much rather have you purchase your ringtones directly from them so they can make some extra money. If they made it so easy then nobody would buy them.

I have not yet figured out how to copy the files from my card to the phone. I can make the mp3 files and put them on my card but I dont know how to get to the file in the phone and tell it to save it to the phone, I just got this thing yesterday so yes I am a noob with it.

Yeah I wish I would have read this before I got an i870, I was thinking about the i930 and it wasn't much more expensive for me. Now I am kind of regretting the i870. The only reason I went for the i870 was because the i930 didn't have Bluetooth although it does have a lot of other stuff. Then I find out you can't even send files to the phone via Bluetooth anyways. Very Dissapointed!

Edit: Of course I've only had the phone for 2 days so I can still turn it in with no penalty and get the i930 instead...some heavy consideration is in order.

Posted by: whitedove

No files can be copied to the phone from the card. All files must be transfered from your computer to the phone through a usb data cable.

Not true! When it comes to pictures, you can transfer or copy them to your phone from the card. That is how you can send your wallpapers to other Nextel's because it doesn't have that DRM protective **** on there, being that you transfered files with the card. Get your facts right!

And about the i930, Bluetooth is a neat feature. However, you have Windows and so much other ****. I also found out that the method that I'm using for real clear videos with my i870, will also work with the i930. The only downfall for me is that I don't believe that you can record over 10 seconds even if you have the SD card. I still need to check on that. Besides Bluetooth (which is limited because you can't send files anyway), the i930 would be the perfect phone for the type of person I am.

Yea, you can do that method with regular sounding ringers. However, if you are trying to put "high quality" MP3's on your phone as ringers through the Transflash card, it won't work. Point Blank!!!

It is still being figured out on how to use high quality ringers. Nobody has cracked media center as of yet. Can't wait though!

The card doesn't really support ringtones being sent through the card since Nextel has that feature locked.

The easiest way to avoid all of this is to just use the data cable and a jal program for your ringers, wallpapers, and java apps.

It still supports higher bitrates like 80 kbps, while the i870 only supports 48 kbps at the max. It still has better sounding ringers than the i870.

Just to let you know, it is impossible to get high quality ringers through using Digi-mobile.com or any other website.

Nextel doesn't allow multimedia to be downloaded off the air, except through them. In the meantime, there is no way to get high quality ringers. I figured I would just keep everybody up on that.

Posted by: Arnstarn

Just curious, is there a limitation as to the size(mb/kb) or the length of time of the mp3 ringtone you will be able to load if you use the the highest quality tha has been mentioned to work on your phone. Even though it doesn't make sense to have a 3 minute ringtone, I have loaded a that 3 minute ringtone in the as a 8Kbps 8000Hz mono ringtone but when I tried to load it as a 48Kbps 8000Hz mono ringtone the most I could load it as was 40 secs (maybe 45). Its not really that important of a thing for me to know. I just wanted to point this out to see if anyone else had realized this or if i'm the only one to notice this or if this is just common knowledge and I'm just wasting my time. Lol. Curious to see if anyone has been able to load a longer/bigger file than I have.

Posted by: UrbanLife

I took some of my old wav. ringtone I used on my i860 and loaded them on my i870 through the card and then saved them to the phone itself and I still don't see where I can assign it as a ringtone, it's was a wav file I already had use on my old i860 , is there something wrong I'm doing. I was see if it's possible to load the wav file and use as ringtone then I'll work on trying mp3 ringtone. Someone help me out, I've read all the post on this thread and still don't see how this done even though some claim to be doing it. Thanks for any info.

Posted by: mad86ta

i have an i870 and i had the same problems the only way i was able to solve it is by downloading the ringtones using webjal. also i used the roxio software to cut out small parts of a full song not to load my phone with the whole song. you can also do it by saving the tones in a wav. file as an 8 bit and a sampling rate of 8k then use webjal to load it into your phone then you will be able to use the tone as a ring tone

Normally, I use webjal to download wav and mp3 ringers. They are the standard quality for nextels. When I tried to upload "high" quality ringers off a web page, it gave me a error "incompatible format".

Send me a link and I'll test it out. If you are talking about the ringers offered from Nextel, I already have that. I want the really really clear ringers like on the Mp3 player.

Posted by: SideKicked

when i downloaded from the nextel site they were clear and loud as mp3s...way better than any i870 ringtones i have ever heard

my solution to any tech problem, light it on fire and throw it through the window of whoever sold it to you.

no actually, the ringtones on my i870 sound great so you probably need a new speaker or something, its also possible the codec that reads the mp3 is corrupted, sometimes the higher quality mp3s wont play, i need to reset to phone then they play just fine.

and sometimes the little midget inside the phone is tired and he turns off the radio....

Don't wast your time on format cause I have all that down. I can email the sound to my phone but of course that only reads as media and not a ringtone, this loader sux big time. If there is any better version of it or better program please help me with major detail. I'm not as computer literate as most of you.

Ok, so I read thru about 6 pages of this thread and just couldn't read anymore.

The question asked in this thread was if you could assign mp3's as ringtones?

The answer I seemed to have come up with is yes, but at a lower quality.

About 6-8 months ago, I made a bunch of files for my i860 and put them in as ringtones. They were the set at the max settings for the i860 ringtones.
I recently got an i870 and assumed I could use regular mp3's from my PC's music player (in their normal great sounding format) and just use them as phone ringtones. Nope. The i870's can't do that for some reason. I'm not sure if it's something to do with the Codeplug or what.

So to test the sound quality difference, I put the 30 second audio clip in both formats onto my phone (one in 'ringtone quality' and one in 'standard mp3 quality').

Here was the difference between the files

Version A

Bit Rate = 64kbps
Audio sample size = 8 bit
Channels = 1 (mono)
Audio sample rate = 8 kHz

----

Version B

Bit Rate = 192kbps
Dunno the sample size (not listed in file information)
Channels = 2 (stereo)
Audio sample rate = 44 kHz

The sound difference is very noticeable.

The ringtone version is clear and sounds pretty good I'll admit, but when you play the mp3 version after, you'll notice the mp3 has more 'body', is more 'rich' and is more 'full'.

I guess I'm not so upset I have to keep using the ringtone version. It's not that bad. It's just that when you compare the difference and you know the phone can play standard mp3's in audio player, yet chooses not to allow them to be assigned as ringtones, it can drive anyone crazy!

So, just so I can end this chapter of technological madness, can someone verify that standard mp3's (With the quality of a ripped CD) CANNOT be set as ringtones in that high quality format? (The quality needs to be lowered to 64kbps, 8 bit, mono, 8 kHz, correct?)
