Ok, I got another call today. This time is was from Cingular. Offering me an incentive to stay with the company. It would be a lateral move and the salary is well ... more than generous as far as I'm concerned. I don't know what to do now!!!

Beware of counter offers.

There are usually 2 reason for leaving a company, money, and environment.

If you took the time to look for and secure another job, I'd take it!

If what you and others have stated are true (cingular treats you like crap)after a few weeks or months, you will still be miserable, and want to leave again.

By then, the "big red" offer will be off the table, so then you are left with Tmob and Sprint to work for.

Many times a counter-offer is used to keep you around long enough to find a replacement. Do a search on career builder, monster, RoberT Half, or other job sites.

I wish you well in your decision!

Phantom,

PM me with your email address. I am an Accounting and Finance executive recruiter and have 2 independant documents you should read before accepting any counter. They are dangerous, dangerous, dangerous.

I'm in Accountant and Finance. I recently started a new job as well. My old employer made a counter offer. I respectfully declined.

Once you resign, move forward.

Many companies will fell you are extorting more money to stay. In effect, if you were underpaid, not appreciated, or worse, had a unbearable work environment, no amount of money can possible compensate you for that.

Let me give you an example:

I was making (not real) $51,000 at company A, great benefits, no OT, but very difficult to get promoted. In addition, Senior Management allowed my supervisor and Manger to yell, scream, and curse at employees whenever. They never took complaints seriously. My only recourse was to find alternate employment.

Company B come along, same time of work, Pays $70,000 to start, decent benefits after 90 days, learning work environment, flexible work schedule (I can work from home, no set time to be in the office unless there is a meeting.

Company A decides that after all the people I have trained at my level and higher, to offer me a promotion with only a 3% increase . The work environment would be the same, just 3% more money. After 3 years in the same position, increased responsibility, a new MBA, all they offer me is 3% ($1,500) when another company is offering me $15,000 more (30 plus percent) and greater advancement choices.

I was the top candidate for the next level. Personnel calls me 2 months after I quit to see if I am interested. I say only at the top salary ($61,000). they tell me I would only get 3-5% more than my current.

Bottom line, if they really valued you as an employee (treated you well and paid you market wages) you would not go looking for another position.
