Does anyone know how I can connect my GD88 to my computer using IR to up/download pictures from it? Is any software required, and where can I download it? Thanks.

Posted by: lost_rebel

none required for IrDA. Just drag and drop from the pc.

Posted by: Espo

So you dont have to have any software on your PC to use the IrDA?

Posted by: lost_rebel

Nothing other than the IrDA driver to make the IR port work to start with.

I'm leaving to go to the computer store to pick one up right now!! How much do they cost?

Another questionn....
What size do the pictures have to be to upload to the phone (???x???). And can you just upload .midi files to the phone or do you have to convert them to some other format (like i had to with my S100)?

Posted by: lost_rebel

USB to IrDA is about $30-$40.
As far as the pixel size, 132x176.
Yes just plain midi files, nothing special. Most midi files work fine. They have to be less than 60kB though. I have run accross some that will not work when uploaded buy just a few and I can usually find another version that works fine.

Thank you very much!!

Im guessing this is a great alternative to a data cable!

Posted by: lost_rebel

Only downside is that IrDA is one file at a time where the datacable is capable of transfering many files at a time

Well my IrDA can transfer many files. Well not at the same time but with one command... You just drag and drop those multiple files to phone one after another.

Posted by: lost_rebel

I am so very proud of you. That is exactly what I was refering to. With the Datacable, you can select many files and transfer them at one time, once selected push transfer. Plus you do not need to touch the phone using the datacable, everything is done from the PC. While you can drag and drop from the PC to the mobile, you can not go the otherway so easily. You need to send one at a time and specifically tell it to send each file.

Well I called every computer store in my area and no one has an "InfraRed port". Where can I find one in a local store, so I dont have to order off line and wait, i want something today!!!

Posted by: lost_rebel

Did you ask for a USB to Infrared adapter? I don't know off the top of my head what stores are available in your area. I would think that Comp USA would have it or a specialized computer store. I have it built into my laptop

Posted by: Espo

THats the first place I called, along with Best BUy, Circuit City, Radio Shack....

Im going to call compusa back and ask again...

Posted by: The Rex

i'm using the mobile action technology ma-620 usb irda dongle i got from pac mall here in toronto for $25 cdn

I tried and my computer detects my GD88 and gives a wireless link icon...
whne I click I get the option of sending files to it...
but then how to I retrieve the files stored on the phone?

Posted by: FALCO

The files are stored in the Data folder under either the sound subfolder for MIDI files or the pictures folder for pictures.

Posted by: The Rex

i think it's personalise >> data folder >> browse >> received

then you have to move it to picture or sound

Posted by: cc1234321

I know how to find the files on my phone..
but how do I upload them to my PC? There's no way of browsing the files from my PC and the "send via IR" thing doesnt work...

Posted by: The Rex

i highlight the file in the data folder >> menu >> send irda... works with no probs...

when you try, what happens?

Posted by: cc1234321

I get no response from my PC...
yes...I did test that the infrared works...

weird...someone help plz!! I really want to upload my pics...

Posted by: lost_rebel

personalize, datafolder, received

Posted by: lost_rebel

weird, the message did not post for 12 hours. Sounds like you have a problem with the IrDA on your computer. Try sending files to the mobile. Also there is no reason to move files out of the received folder except for giggles. You can still set wallpapers and ringtones to point to the received folder.

Yes...
point is...

I want to try uploading the pictures I took with the camera..
not download anything into the phone...

My point is, does it work at all! If you can go one way, then chances are you are doing something wrong. If you can not, then the problem is elsewhere. Frankly, I do not care what you are doing or trying to do. I do not mind making suggestions, somethings were harder to get working than others. My mobile works fine (IrDA, Datacable MMS and email). Sometimes you need to try things in order to help others troubleshoot your problems. If I could get my hands on your mobile and computer, I could solve your problem in about 15-30 minutes. But the fact is, here it takes longer!

I have a notebook with WinME, and the Irda transmission is working in both directions (from and to the computer). However, I have to send the files one by one, the "select multiple and send the group" unfortunately sends only the first one.

I have a desktop with XP Pro too, but I have problems with Irda transmission to and from the GD87 on it. (I tested the Irda itself with my T39 in modem mode, that works).
From the GD87 to the XP: works but not reliable, sometimes ok, sometimes nothing.
From the Xp to the GD87: not working at all, sometimes nothing, sometimes it recognizes the GD87 as "new device, modem" instead file transfer.
I tried to slow down the Irda to as low as 19.2 but no difference.
Not really important as I can do the job with the notebook, but strange.

Forgot to mention: why on Earth gives it the same filename to every single picture? Would it be too complicated to give them a different number or something???

Posted by: cc1234321

I've also got a notebook with WinME...
I'll try again...I haven't tried sending files into my phone yet...

but I suspect it won't work...
it *sometimes* detects my phone...sometimes not...

btw my GD88 is detected as a GD87...weird

Hi guys, please, i was wondering anybody there with tips on this for a Mac user? cause i donīt see nothing for me, i feel so lonely, please some tips for Mac addicts

Posted by: mmormota

As the GD87 uses standard IrDA profiles only, it probably works with a Mac too - but I don't know the Macs.

The software that works with the datacable renames the duplicate entries automatically. The files are named by data/time down to the minute. It is a little weird but helps when figuring out what they might be when looking at 50-100 pics later

It appears that windowsME is the root of many Irda problems. I have not seen any problems with win XP or Win2K except of some compaq laptops that have not upgraded their IrDA driver. I suspect the problem lies in WinME.
Hmmm strange, like I said, they are the same hardware and most of the core code is the same. That is probably why it reports itself as GD87

Posted by: seiferoth

Umm, ok I just got an IrDA port, but it didn't come with any programs or anything. How do I use it in conjunction with my GD88?

Posted by: lost_rebel

Once the drivers are installed for the IrDA device, try putting the GD87/88 in front of it with the Ir ports facing each other and see if you can detect the mobile phone. After that, an icon should appear on your desktop, go to the applications menu and select Irda and receive files then you can drag and drop files to that to transfer to the mobile (one at a time). The mobile will prompt you if you want to save the file, then it transfers to the received data folder. To go the other way, select the file you want to transfer on the mobile, hit menu, then select send IR. The computer will prompt you to save and then it transfers....Done

When I have the USB IrDA port plugged in, it slows an icon in my system tray, and when i mouseover it it says "Safely remove hardware." That icon shows a small grayish square with a green arrow over it. I don't get any icons by putting my GD88 in front of it or anything like that, any ideas?

Posted by: lost_rebel

The icon will show up on your desktop...Or at least it does on my win2k and winxp laptops.
Try putting the mobile into receive IrDA and try again.
