This is a question to all Cingular corp employes. I have been working at cingular company owned retail location for a year and a half. I have been hearing some rumors that my store will be closing. They are very reliable. If my store was to close, will I get any kind of serverance from cingular?

that sucks dood.

If youre in a union store, Im sure they will try to get you a transfer. Non union stores, Im not too sure how theyre working them. You might want to go ahead and request a transfer to another store near you so that way you get out before they close it. Im sure Cingular will try to get your store reps transferred, but honestly, Im not entirely sure on how it works. Maybe a sales rep can shed some light on it, Im only in CS.

A store corp store around the corner from mine closed last week and everyone was transferred to various stores. Depends on how things are in your area.

the nearest store to me is over an hour. Im not sure If I will be able to stay with the company. I was hoping for some kind of severance package. I knew it existed when we were at&t. But now that we are cingular who knows.

If you are Blue, your current severance package is in effect until December 31, 2005, and it is very generous.

As far as the Orange severence package for January and beyond, I'm not sure!!

Not for retail....

I've actually come from a closed store. They closed it due to lack of traffic and are building a new one that I'll be transfered to once that happens. If your store closes, you will most likely be transfered to another store in the area. If you have a store you'd rather go to and once the closing is announced, I would go to your ASM or HR and put the request in and plead your case.

Well, I started this post on 11/3 when I heard a rumor that my store is closing. Well Now I know its true. My manager was stupid enough to leave his laptop open. I read and printed the email for myself. He has known for some time now, at least 2 months. It really sucks that cingular can't be honest with their employes, instead it looks like they will wait till the last day with no notice.

Well, I feel for you.

Keep in mind your manager is trying to CYA himself by not telling anyone, as plans may change.

As the day grew closer, may he/she didn't have the heart or courage to break the news, so the laptop was left open on purpose.

I know its sucks, but severance is up to the employer in most case. That is unless, there is a major closure (think key business in the area involving hundreds or thousands). No offense, but I doubt a wireless store qualifies as a major business.

Most employment is AT WILL these days. When you are let go, you will get are owed your final paycheck that day.

Good Luck.

well the other thing about them not tellin you is that then the #s will tank.

did it say anythign about transfering you guys? they hav eto give you XX days notice if they are laying you off (in hawaii its 60) so that might be a good thing they may not be laying you off but transfering you

I figured id update you all on the recent news. I finally confronted my manager, and it turns out the store is closing this sunday. I have a choice to either take another posistion at another store or I can be on the payroll for the next 30 days and receive severance pay. Now im not quite sure what the severance pay will be. Now the closest store to me is 45 mins away. Should I take the pay and severance or should i transfer. Now, Im also considering to open an accessory cart in a very busy mall in jan. or feb. Please let me know what you guys think.. thanks again..

Before you can make a decision, get all the facts. IN WRITING if possible.

Do you know how much those carts/kiosks cost in a mall? Very expensive. In So Cal, they are $2,000-10,000 a month on average. Also, your rent is "adjustable" based on GROSS SALES not NET PROFIT. In essence, making it very difficult to sustain a business for a "small" operator.

As I said, weigh the pro's and con's of the severance (30 days) vs. having a steady job for months(?) as you decide your next move. If you get paid salary and commision, I am sure they will only pay you your base!

Good Luck!

Your boss is the ultimate weasel if he didn't even tell you three days in advance the store was closing. That's so lame. I feel for you.

I would have to agree with the previous poster that the rewards go to the mall owners and the risks go to the cart operators. You would definitely want to talk to the mall people ASAP and find out their charges before you make any plans, because hope springs eternal amongst small business owners and they know it.

If you've never managed a business or had employees before you'll be signing on for a lot of headaches by becoming a business owner. There are rewards, if you're really fed up with having a boss. But it will eat up your formerly free time. Do you currently know who you would want to work the cart when you aren't there?

If it were me, I'd stay. I understand how you could feel reluctant b/c of the distance but do not pass up an opportunity to continue working until you've found something thats closer and permanent. Good luck! I hope you make the decision thats best for you.

Posted by: BellaDea

I would transfer. they're right when they say that mall kiosks cost a lot and you don't get rich off them at all.

it is also pretty crappy that your manager didn't have the balls to tell you your store was closing at least two weeks ahead of time. My store that closed they knew at least a month ahead that it was closing and two weeks before when the date was set.

Good luck in whatever you decide!

dont know what to tell you.. see what the manager says.. i got screwed in a similar deal last november. WRI closed my store and i lost a great job. i used to work a 6 hour shift. id take an hour lunch. work for about an hour. and do homework for 4 hours. and i averaged something like $14.3x/hr... ah well.
good luck
