Modem + Cingular DataConnect?

I'm confused after reading through the forums... do I need Cingular's DataConnect service to connect to the Internet, or can I just use the modem to dialup my regular ISP?

The modem should work fine, provided that you have installed the modem driver and a dial-up connection.
You pay normal mobile charges plus access to your ISP. Speed is 9.6 bps, possibly 14.4 bps.
