New to Cell Phone Connectivity - HELP!

I just purchased a Sanyo VI-2300 (Sprint) and would like to connect it with my PC. I played with using an old cell phone as a modem a few years back and got it working, but that was with the "official" Sprint software and data cable. Fast-forward to today when, with less money, I'm trying to find the most economical solution and the *best* software and features.

I've checked out the Datapilot software and MobileAction's USB Suite online. When one of these pieces of software doesn't allow a certain feature for a phone that it provides for a different phone, for example using my VI-2300 as a modem or controlling its file management from the PC, why is that? Is it because the phone is incapable of that feature, or because the phone is so new that the software developers just haven't had a chance to get around to adding those particular features?

Thank you in advance!
