On my v3 razr, is going through each ring detail and setting the volume to 0 the same thing as putting them on silent? If not how do I put the loud ringer on silent so I can delete the default ringers?

If you are going to delete ringtones you need to go thru each ring detail and make sure that the ringtones you are going to delete are not being used. The easiest way to do this is with P2kTools.
