Trick to getting the OTA NOW

I found out that you can get the OTA by just turning on your phone on and off.
I did it with my girlfriends sidekick2 and got it on the 4th try, I did it with mine and I got it on the 1st,

Just power your sidekick of and on using the power button.

Just have patience and you'll get the update

i'm presuming instantly.... i did mine 8 times, and since then my "7" has been going constantly for 11 min, i'd be presuming i'm getting it now.

if it doesn't stop after a few blinks when the g gomes up, you might be getting it, if it does, try again.

i waited about 4-7 mins when i saw the '7' come up and it should come up right away it just starts going crazy as it searches for service

yea i got it now. haha. i thought of it as a P. i thoug it was a different icon that comes up to the left of the G that looked like a 7. so u waited around 4-7 mins b4 restart.

Hit it on #15. Began downloading immediately after the normal 4-6 gulps. Still downloading after 5 minutes. Did you get the radio update with your OTA update? Don't know if they have a set amount to send out each day as we've heard, but the procedure does work.

Your phone is a radio. You knew that right??

On the last OTA there was a firmware update AND a modem update.

Anyway, I think they have a modem update again as well.

gulping i like that word better. so do it start gulping after it connects to the G. i keep the phone on for a bit b4 i start the SK and it just stays a Solid "7"

For me, it started about 10 seconds after getting G. I usually had 4-6 gulps, and after that, nothing. When you get the update, the "gulping" doesn't stop for 12 minutes and then you are notified you have a system update.

After I updated and rebooted, it downloaded my purchased apps again and then I got another system update which it is still installing.

Yep, I also got the new radio firmware. Was at 0.3.8 and now at 0.4.1

FM!!

once i restart and the 7 is searching.. should i keep my eyes on the 7 to see if its going crazy? if it doesnt, i should restart? does the update come before or after the "G"

how long should i wait in between restarts?

it should start AFTER getting the G as Chinasour said. i think aym in my 25+ restarts. haha. not looking good for me.

1. Update comes after G
2. If you don't see your G7 gulping steadily..it's a no go for that reboot.
3. I waited 10-20 after each restart to make sure.
4. You will know it when you see it.

Remember..if the rumours are true..they are only allowing X OTA's per day. So if they have reached that number today, you are out of luck. BUT, the procedure works, so try again another day.

Yeah, they just deleted a whole post and lock the *THE OTA IS ROLLING OUT* topic over @ HIPTOP FORUMS. I got it after only two tries. It goes to show how the mods over there are not looking out for the ppl, they KNEW this but wanted to keep this charade going on and on and on..... I hate applefag!

i think that rumor about the X number of updates perday is tru because aym well into my 30's maby low 40's for the restart and still nuthing. so when the thing reset so it has a new updates for the day? hehe if any one knows.

Look in your menu system. You already have it downloaded or you wouldn't have been given the notice. I just can't remember where you go to install now. Maybe under System or Downloads?

what i did was. i restarted the SK. let nuting connect to the internet like connecting to AIM and such. then after the G was connected. i net to my network status and did the menue + M thing and looked at the bytes reviced and stuff. now assuming ur not connected to any thing. the SK is prolly only talking to the danger servers. if that reviced data is crazily going up. its prolly the update. if u do the first update is around 4.4 megs and the second is around 2.4 megs. thats how i learned i was getting the update.

edit: wow this is scary.. i remmeber my first sk2 back in january and around that time we got a OTA and in the middle my sidekick crashed.. lol.. so i had to send it in for a replacement.. im currently on my 3rd sidekick.. oh well... its activating now.. goodluck to the ones stilll trying

To everyone who's not getting it- here's a few tips that I learned in my long hard road out of 2.0 hell. Keep in mind these are all just THEORIES & SPECULATION. This "trick" might not be a trick after all, it might still just be coincidence.

* If you are on your 600th restart, leave it alone till tomorrow. They might only release a set # of downloads in one day(like 5000), and you might just be restarting in vain.

* Try doing it around 4-5 am. Few people are up at this time(except freaks like me) & you'll have a good chance at grabbing a d/l slot(IF that's how it works, that is). That's when I got mine.

* Also, try driving somewhere & restarting. I restarted probably 200 times in my house & in that area with no luck, and when I finally got it I was all the way across town. I live by highway 9 in Norman, OK, and when I got it I was at the 12th street eastside Wal-Mart. Restarted ONCE in the parking lot over there & BAM there it was! Some cell towers are just wonky, the one by my house is always malfunctioning. I wish I'd have thought of this 199 restarts ago!

* Try my restart method. I have NO idea if this has anything to do with me getting it finally but it won't hurt to try, it's what I did in the WM parking lot.

-Turn off normally
-remove sim card
-turn on & wait for it to start up completely & give you the "no sim card" message
-Put in sim card

It will then automatically restart. When it starts back up, watch your bytes. This is what I did when I got mine, so maybe it'll work for you too.

Hope these tips help.

If your "7" is going crazy but you can't tell what it's doing, hit menu in the jump screen & select 'network status'. Once on that screen, hit menu+M & there you'll be able to check your bytes/packets recieved. Normal SK's stop at around 100KB or less when restarting, so if yours keeps climbing you're probably getting it. A good indication that you're getting it would probably be the data going up past about 400-500KB.

You can also try jump+shift+S to get to the syslog(2.0ers enjoy it now, in 2.3 its gone!) & it'll tell you there if you're getting it. But niot many people can decipher a syslog so probably stick with the network status trick.

Yes south is right, the reason you are restarting the phone is to access another IP lease, and socket for which the OTA is located. Also it doesnt mater if you have aim on, or email coming in when getting the patch. I did, and it was no issue.

Removing the sim card makes no difference.

Well it might make a difference. Once the tmo store guy did that when I was stuck on 1 dot & it fixed it so I had a G. If you're having trouble getting the update it won't hurt to try it.

it upgraded mine after rebooting the device twice.

1st it downloaded the OS upgrade, installed it, rebooted and sent me an email

then it downloaded all the apps (led football, etc.), rebooted and installed them

then it downloaded the radio software upgrade, installed it, rebooted and sent me an email.

There's a logical explanation for it. Basically, It's not good for the network for you to reboot your device every 10-15 seconds! Basically its a DDoS attack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDoS) I'm amazed the servers haven't been overwhelmed and died yet!

Umm, it was full battery life, I did it right after I took it off the charger this morning.. It somehow lost reception and corrupted my firmware and now T-Mobile has to send me a new SKII. Wonderful, isn't it? I didn't even touch it when it was updating.. It updated the OS and in the middle of installing new applications it did what I just described.. Terrible =\

Actually if you did some reading, you would have noticed people were posting this exactly technique atleast a week ago and longer on the hiptop forums. Its a matter of doing some reading. Look at the other TWO threads that cover the 2.3 update and you'll notice people talking about this same technique...its funny how someone does the reading, starts a thread and everyone credits him/her with creating this technique.

do it the way i discribed it. if u go on earlier in this thread. u mite also wanna try around 2-3 in the morining. or like 7-8 in the morning. u know when the normall people sleep. there's prolly a lot of people trying to get this update and just keep restarting and thats prolly the reason ur not getting it. and if ur lost just ask. there's alot of friendly people here dont see y they cant help.

I feel your pain. I've probably restarted something like 300 times in the last 3 days. During the day, at night, in the middle of the night I woke up and tried it. I tried it plugged into the wall, I tried driving to 3 different places far away from eachother and tried it. NOTHING!!

I restarted twice just for sh|ts and grins. I didn't see anything really going on so I just left it sit for a few. I picked it up a few minutes later and went to Network then Menu + M and saw that it had already downloaded 2.7Mb! Something is going on here....

EDIT: Yep, it worked on my second restart! I never thought it would work for me. I'm one of those people that nothing ever works for!

15 power cycles, at 9am on 11/9, I received the 2.3 OTA on my second sk2. My prev one had the update about a month ago, but then the scroll wheel took a crap so I had to get a replacement.

What I think works even better...turn your sidekick off and on as early as possible. I had to be in the office this morning at 6:30am EST. I turned it on, nothing happened, thought what the hell...Restarted and to my happiness....it downloaded! HOORAY!

I finally got the update! It was really weird, I've tried the whole on off thing the past few days and nothing. I woke up at 6 this morning and shut it off once because I had lost data connection, and I noticed that the data indicator was going nuts and bam....there it was lol. So this trick definitely does work, in fact I'm using the sidekick to write this post now, when I wasn't able to view hofo on here before the update. The only thing I've noticed is that I'm not able to view other people's aim buddy icon. I haven't tried restarting yet, hopefully it will help. Has anyone else experienced this?

I thought this was a bunch of crap. my son also has a sk2 and we where both in the same room. he got his update and I was still waiting until I read this thread. Thanks Alot. It really works. keep trying guys i got mine at about 20 trys

go to ur network status and then press menue + m if ur bytes reviced goes back 6k and ur doing nuthing on ur sk ur getting the update.

My bytes recieved is usally at like 5.0k -6.0k, when im just sitting there.. Hrm.. So if it goes PAST 6.0k? im getting it?

Good point. lol...im done trying, no point it causing havoc on everything from restarting. if it worked on like 1-3 restarts fine....but since thats not the case. And some people need to restart 50+ times... i dont seen any type of pattern. So im done

yupp. give it some time also. and if it get to 6K and keeps raising . ur mostly likely getting the update. to make this easier make sure u dont let aim or any other thing connect. all that uses data to trannsfer. so it will kinda throw u off. that just makes it easier.

Hahaha it works. I been lurikin on this thread trying the methods. 50+ power cycles and nothing. Well last night I turned it off.
Come the morningtime and I had to go to work. Well at 8:55 I turn my phome off and throw it in my pocket.
I go to work and take my phone out to check the time and there was an update awaiting me. The javascript is great. The best thing to do is turn ur phone on early and bam
