Has anyone bought a refurbished 650 from Cingular? The price is $139 w/ contract and I was considering it if the phone was in good condition. My main worry is about the appearance of the exterior. Is it scratched? Things like that. Also can you use Hotmail on there?

I think it's probably hit or miss.

Chances are though you won't even know it's a refurb.

Use Hotmail in what regard? Do you mean send/retreive mail from a Hotmail account? Do you have the POP3 option for Hotmail?

Personally I wouldn't buy a refurbished model....there are usually subtle problems with these devices and you could have it do wierd things.

I haven't had experiences with Cingular refurbs, but I was lucky enough to get 2 Sprint "refurbs" (my dog decided to pick my 2 day old treo & brand new leather -w/ new leather smell- case off my desk, proceed to the garden and chew the top off the Treo, and the case into tiny bits) from Lock/Line...

when I looked at their status though, they weren't refurbs--brand new... with 3-5 bad pixels each... enough to drive me nuts. The first one I requested a new unit from Lock/Line... and they sent another--with the same problems. I then went to the Sprint store, told them it was rediculous, they agreed and gave me a new-in-box 650, and swapped the old insurance one as warranty.

I'd look into where Cingular is getting it's refurbs... might not be so much refurbed, as B Stock.

I just ordered one, so Ill let you know. My experiance with Cingulars refurbished phones are.. you cant tell the difference. Thats why I ordered one.

As far as the cosmetic looks, you can't tell the difference. As far as how it works, it can be a hit and miss issue. It may work great or may not. I had some issues with the brand new Treo that I had purchased. Needless to say, I'm on my 3rd refurb phone from the Cingular Warranty XMB. Yet, I have had a refurb from Cingular previously that worked flawlessly--just not with the Treo 650.

Of course, on a Cingular treo 650, you can do #*786 to see how much talk time is on the lifetimer because Cingular will have zeroed it out as well as changed the outer casing on it. Yes, it will have the latest firmware, as well, so you won't have to worry about that.

Hope your refurb works right on the first time!! Happy Treoing!!!!!

I got a refurb Blackberry 7290 from Cingular, and it looks brand new, comes with the accessories and the whole works in a box. I thought it was a great deal.

The refurb that I got through lockline for my other phone was great. To this day, I never had a problem with that one. Yes, it had the box with all of the accesories, manuals, etc, just like when you purchase a new one. I'm just saying that I'm on my 3rd refurb with Cingular for the Treo 650. I purchased a new one and Ringo Pro messed it up where it would reset several times a day, as well as the screen would freeze up. That's when warranty exchange sent me a refurb and now it is 3 refurbs later.

its obvious that the mileage varies. Even if you do get a brand new Treo, it doesn't guarrantee that there's no problems. Pick your poison

I was very attracted to the deal. But it's a 2 yr contract with Cingular. and the refurbished Treo 650 is under 1 year warranty.
yesterday I was reading the review of Treo 650 on Amazon.com, one of the reviewer mentioned that Treo is quite fragile, with lifetime ~6months-1 yr (Cingular doesn't offer equipment protection/phone insurance for PDA phone).
Could someone please tell me if it's true that Treo will start to reset itself/shut down with no reason after a few months of usage?

The restart/reset issue can happen from time to time, but it most usually happens when the user installes something that does not agree with this particular OS.

I've heard all the stories about PALMs resetting themselves and they almost alwyas come down to installed software interaction.

There are many old treo 600s out there that have been going for years. Same is true for other PALM hardware. Any device with a large LCD touchscreen that you carry around with you has the potential for damage if you are not careful with it. I have a Zire 72 I have carried with me about every day for well over a year and it still looks and functions as new because I have it in a protective case. I now have a 650 and am very happy with it. It certainly feels solid and as rugged as any other PALM/PPC device that I have seen.

Well, my uncle carried his Treo 600 in his back pocket for 2 years and it worked fine until he got a belt clip and it fell out of the clip into the lake.

There is already a thread on this in the Cingular Phone subforum.
