Sign that the 2125 is not too far off from release?

Yep, as gps said this is a sure sign that the device is getting closer and closer to release.

From a store? Or an online retailer?

Amazon. Just checked, down to $80 now with new contract.
Why does it matter?
I understand if it's some clumsy online store that may send you refub you may be wary,
but this is Amazon and you know you can get good service.

If your timing was right, there was a point sometime last year where you could get the SMT5600 from Amazon.com with AT&T service for FREE. Actually, after all of the rebates came in, you were putting $50 in your pocket.

I'm semi-biased, but if I'm going to purchase a phone, I'm going to do it in person. The value of developing a relationship with a salesperson is priceless. Salespeople can be your friend. YMMV

Yap, and that miserably failed with me at my local cingular store, phone was $250
and you had to get data plan to get $50 rebate, I tried to work out a deal
since it was gonna be two phones for me and my fiance but on separate plan,
but the manager wouldn't even budge a single dollar. Said Goodbye, went to amazon the same night,
had the phone in hand after 2 days, paid less that half the price of what they offered
without getting $40/m data plan.

Ya but it was AT&T phone and you had to go thorhg pain to get it working with Cingular data,
and I needed phone this year July, not last year.

Well, I have an smt5600 that's a nine out of ten that I'm selling. $150.00 and I pay shipping (ground). Well at least you don't have to sign a 2 year contract. It is locked to Cingular.

I want to get one of those HP 6515 units. Need to sell this first.
