Thinking about working for cingular

I thinking about having a go at working for cingular. Before you call me crazy understand this... I work at an alternative high school for troubled teenagers. We do restraints the whole bit. I am tired of holding down high school aged chiidren down against their will.
Anyway I also run a small business on ebay selling electronics and quite often cell phones. I deal with them all the time and have developed a fairly good working knowledge of the phones out there today. Sooo... I was thinking why not turn that into something other than the worst job on the planet that I currently work at.
Here are my questions:
How much room is there for advancement? Can I expect to move up the ranks or will I be stuck in sales for the remainder of my days? What is the pay like? Can someone give me a ball park number on what I could expect to get paid? I am assuming that I would be starting out in a basic sales rep position. I have a college degree and supervisory experience under my belt and would be interested in advancement. I know that the whole pay thing really depends on lots of factors but if someone could give me a rough estimate I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Cingular is not a bad job at all, if you join Union benefits are good and pay is good for someone starting out. I have a degree and trust me you don't get any preference in Cingular for having it, at least it didn't in my district. Pay scale with commish will probably range between 30k-40k a year depending on your store and how good your are in sales. Have an open mind though, alot of what is said in the forums is opinion, and if you want mine I think with a college degree you can do much better, because you think you put up with alot now at your current job, trust me Cingular won't be a cake walk. In our store, I would say roughly %75 of our customers come in to pay a bill or complain, and the other %15 are shopping for new phones or service, but don't forget your competing with all the indirects and Cingular.com for their business. Anyway, like I said have an open mind, stop by your local store, talk to a couple of reps. Ask them how working conditions are, how quickly people have advanced in that location, how busy it is...etc. This will give you a better idea of what to expect, as each store even in th same town is different.

lol, I sold that blackberry that you have on eBay last week. Thanks for the info. I make about 42,000 a year right now but I work two jobs. (I also work at a program where some to the kids go when they are not at school.) I am sure there are some pretty rough aspects of the job but do customers come in and piss on you, or throw feces at you or blood? Ever chase a customer down the street and tackle him in a picker bush? How about walking into a room to discover that a customer has taken a small razor and cut themselves a few dozen times? Sorry, I wasn't trying to minimize the work you do. Just had a rough day I guess. Anyway, how about the room for advancement? How much of your pay is based on commission and is there a certain level you are expected to maintain? I am truly interested in this but I don't want to end up at kiosk in the mall. (not that there is anything wrong with that) I am 33 years old and just looking for a quieter calmer less stressful way to make a living. Preferably with no poo throwing.

Pay would be in the range the other post stated, likely. With a degree, there's room for advancement. Typically, you would be required to stay in your sales job for 12 months, and have hit your target each month, and then you could post for other positions within the company. You can go from RSC (basic sales), to ASM (asst store manager) to RSM (store manager), to ARSM (area manager)... if you plan on being with the company for awhile. Having a degree definately helps your chances of moving into management.

Benefits are great. If you're adaptive to change, and enthusiastic, you can have a lot of fun with the company.

One thing to consider: You'd have to stop selling phones on eBay. It would be considered a conflict of interest, and they could terminate you for it. Keep it in mind.

Best of luck to you!

Hmmm... What if I never meention the eBay thing again? I don't sell cell phones exclusively but I do sell them when I find one at a good price. It is a nice source of income for me and I would hate to give it up. Would it be that dificult to keep on the DL?

It could unfortunately get you fired for cause, something no one wants. As far as keeping it on the DL, I'd suggest not doing anything related to it while at work, and making a point of letting as few people as possible know about it.
